All you folks in the Bastrop area are so lucky to have this gem in your backyard. This is THEE best BBQ I have ever had. And it's not surprising as the man behind the grill is one talented, passionate, funny, sweet-as-can-be pit master. Not only did J.O. give us driving directions on the phone but stood in the middle of the road waving us down so we could find the place. I'm not kidding! Talk about Texas hospitality! What I found most amazing was his ability to get the smoke in the meat without overwhelming the meat flavor itself. His tender ribs, moist brisket and spiced sausage were all made with great care. Great sauce served on the side. Sides were all tasty. The chicken had sold out for the day but the patrons that sallied up to the counter while we were there all said it was killer. Wish we were around to try the breakfast tacos. I will never forget eating here and meeting the folks at Fitties. For poor customer service. Food is great. Takes forever to make, you should call ahead. Basically only takes cash, minimum $15 for card. We called and order 3 tacos, guy on the phone told us price was $7.53 and they would be ready in 5-10. We get here with $8 in cash to find out the bill is $10 something. They refused to honor the price they quoted on the phone so now we had to send an addition $9 to get breakfast. Personally I think they are over priced for the quality of food you get. read more

Parking: Small parking lot. Maybe 10 cars max. Also note that there is no indoor seating at this place. Time and Day: Ate on a Sunday morning, and there was a very short line. However, do note that if you want brisket, you would want to come later in the afternoon. Food: It was very good. Ordered the brisket and ribs plate with the coleslaw and potato salad as the two sides. All I can say is the meat was moist, tender, and delicious. In fact, if you sit in the back, you can see the owner cooking the meat. Service: The owner is VERY friendly and helpful. He joked around with us and always had a smile. On a long weekend getaway with the family in Bastrop, Tx, we stumbled upon this small food shack off of Hwy 71. Pulling up, we weren't sure, but we'd heard good things. While Fitties may look small, the outside eating area was very well kept with obvious pride. The staff was friendly and made helpful suggestions on what to order. The food was awesome! The standard bacon/egg/cheese breakfast tacos were excellent, but try the 'Marty' breakfast tacos....the brisket melts in your mouth! Also, while it may not be clearly on the menu, the dirty rice was the real deal! Last but not least...the ribs....wonderful smokey goodness! Just left fifties and it was ok. They stop serving breakfast tacos at 11am so we got whatever was left over. Which was the jailhouse tacos. That they definitely were...they were ok if you enjoy a lot of stuff in a taco. Not my preference. The salsa wasn't bad. Again not my fav with tomatoes but it was good salsa. We also ordered the brisket and rib with dirty rice and baked beans. The meat itself was delicious. I would prefer the sauce on side. The beans were bland and the rice was alright. My Boyfriend and I were headed to Austin when we drove right past Fitties, when I said "now thats the kind of BBQ we need to be eating"! We made a U-turn and were SO HAPPY WE DID! The owner knew right away we were newbies to the spot so he offered up a cup of brisket, then gave us a sample of ribs. BOTH WERE AMAZING! We ordered a brisket sandwich and a 1/4 chicken While we were eating out on the lovely picnic tables they have the owner came out with a sample of bread pudding and peach cobbler. (AMAZING) We are both still talking about how good the food was. We are suppose to have dinner in Austin tonight be we have decided to head back over to Fitties. Wow. I am not much of a BBQ person but the Lucy was awesome. I ate two of them along with 1/2 pound of sausage. We where sitting and eating and heard a customer order the MARTY Taco. We asked the owner what was in it and he told us. I said I bet that is good. 4 mins later he is bringing us one too try. Talk about an awesome taco. Every time I go to Bastrop to fish, I stop here for breakfast and then again on the way home for BBQ for dinner. It is a little shack and lacks any kind of atmosphere. You can sit at a picnic table after you get your food at the window. There is a cat there that will finish whatever you can't eat, or "accidentally" drop on the ground. Not exactly my style because it was a little sweet. My husband enjoyed it more than i did. Dirty rice was alright. Could have been a little more flavorful. The pinto beans were just pretty bland. Food was good but customer service was terrible. Ordered 4 breakfast tacos and 2 breakfast combos. They have me 2 bags of food and 2 drinks so I assumed there were 2 breakfast combos in the bag. Get home and 1 combo is missing. I should have checked the bag to make sure they got the order right. I drive all the way back and tell them I am missing a combo, and they tell me they only charged me for one, even though they gave me 2 drinks. And.now they are out of biscuits at 8:30 in the morning so I can't buy another combo. So I try to buy 2 more tacos instead and the girl at the front tells me there is a $15 minimum charge to use a credit card. I have no cash so I can't buy anything now. Never mind the fact that I already bought $20 worth of food on my first trip when they got the order wrong. I don't know if the girl at the register was new, but she seemed confused and didn't really know what she was doing. Another woman and gentleman were standing 10 feet away and aware of what was going on, but nobody offered anything to rectify the situation, and I ended up leaving without food and had to drive down to Sonic. read more

I was headed to Austin for the first-time (as a transplanted Yankee, I need to explore this great state) and wanted to find some bbq on the way. Thanks to Yelp, I found Fitties and was so happy I did. If you're worried about finding it, look for the Citgo station a ways past Bastrop - Fitties is right next door! The girlfriend and I both got the brisket plate with pinto beans and potato salad. The pinto beans were delicious. The potato salad was okay, although if you're wary of a lot of mayo, I'd choose something else. The brisket was tasty and came with a great tangy sauce. Oh, and it's a lot of brisket, too, so don't worry about leaving hungry. I haven't had a lot of bbq so far, but truthfully, this is the best I've had. It sets the bar high. As we were leaving, the guy behind the counter told me to come over and gave me a cup of his bread pudding - delicious. Definitely save room for it. And of course, this is telling about the service and courtesy. Such a nice guy who was thrilled for us to be there. There are a few seats inside, by the ordering window. Otherwise, there's a little outdoor area with some nice, clean benches. While we were eating, some cats came out and were playing around - they were very friendly, but we resisted feeding them. I stopped by Fitties after reading all the great reviews on Twitter. I was a little disappointed. I got their at about 10:45 in the morning. Loads of people were ordering tacos. I heard that they were out of some basic ingredients like bacon. I wanted to buy brisket. The brisket for the day was not done. I did order some baby back ribs for a friend I was headed to see. She said they were good but not what you would get at Louis Mueller's in Taylor. I had their beef sausage. It was very good and was pretty lean for sausage. I live in Bastrop but it is a bit far to drive for breakfast tacos for me. Most of the crowd there seemed like regulars cause they either telephone ordered or knew exactly what they wanted. In fairness to them on the day I was there. It was a U.T. and A & M home game day so I saw lots of people I thought were headed east and west to games in Austin and College Station. read more

I tried the brisket and sausage. The brisket was very tough with no discernable smoke taste or smell. I did not look in the kitchen close enough, but I would swear the brisket is cooked in an oven (an unforgivable sin) and only briefly placed in the pit, if at all, to add "smoke flavor". The sausage was OK. My fiance got the catfish which wasn't bad, but we wouldn't order it again. The sides were great! This was the only reason I didnt leave 1 star. WORTH A DETOUR! Central Texas style BBQ to most is the granddaddy of all BBQ. Meats are slow smoked for a day in low heat giving them melt in your mouth tenderness, there's the unique to Texas, tangy sharp vinegar based BBQ sauce, pitmasters who you can tell their commitment to the craft with the final product... Fitties is worthy of mention for being a detour-worthy BBQ stand. We pulled over randomly during a commute from Austin to Houston, and were not disappointed. I write reviews only when I love something that I think people should go out of their way to try. With the popularity of places like Franklin's, Killen's etc turning Central Texas style BBQ into a trendy thing, you get used to four hour waits and forking over $24/lb for brisket, sometimes higher. We paid about half that at Fitties, HALF!! Also there was only a moderate line, food in five minutes. This is what you want if you want Central Texas style BBQ. Good prices, friendly staff, and of course delicious food. Seriously Bastrop, you're doing it right. Edit: pay no attention to the bad reviews, BBQ is like licorice, you either love or hate it, and region to region people love their own and hate the rest. I'm a native Texan, ate at all the greats from Lockhart to Austin in the motherland of BBQ. My review is based on my experience with Central Texas Style and purely ranking this place up with those.
