We drove in the most amazing landscape and when he saw the turn off for Fisher Towers we took it so I could get a closer look. The scenery is craggy and high. Full of interesting features. I could see a 'king' in one of the rock formations. Yes, I have a fanciful imagination. He told me that Fisher Towers had been featured in the movies including Geronimo and John Carter. The parking lot was full when we got there so we parked along the road. There are campsites so parking is not only taken by hikers and climbers. The trail is more of a hike than a walk as it is 2.2 miles long and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. It ends at an overlook where you can see several of the canyons of Onion Creek. I wanted to hike but we didn't have the right shoes and there's a section where you have to climb an 8 foot ladder. So I had to contend myself with admiring the view and taking tons of photos. The make up of Fisher Towers is cool. It's soft sedimentary rock made up of sandstone, mudstone and conglomerates. Even if you don't study how these layers formed you can still admire the formations after years of being affected by the weather. Recommended stop. Bring water as there's no running water here. And dress accordingly.

This is a great camping spot. Due to the fact it's still a little ways from Moab, and it's a bit off the main street, it takes awhile for the camping spots to fill up. Even on the Fourth of July weekend, only half the spots were taken. The views from your tent stoop are breathtaking, especially for those who haven't spent much time in the area. You get a view of not only Fisher Towers, but Castleton Rock (another great camping spot), and the rest of the wide open valley. This site is packed with all of your plush camping amenities; a bathroom (one of the cleaner ones I've ever seen), lined campsites, rocked fire pits, and two short maintained hiking trails around the base of Fisher Towers. NOTE: I have heard climbers talk about the routes up the Towers, and most of them say that once was enough. Apparently you can feel the 'hardened mud' moving away from you as you ascend (sort of creepy). So that steers me away, but hey, if you got the guts, go for it! For me, I'll just linger around the base and take in the views. :-)

The park offers several manageable hikes and a fantastic "giant sandbox" experience. Top Tips for Parents: Time: Budget 2 full days. This allows you to see the sights without rushing or risking a mid-day meltdown. The Best Hikes: We highly recommend Balanced Rock, Sand Dune Arch (it's a massive hit with kids because of the deep sand play), and The Windows Section. Where to Stay: Stay in Moab. It's incredibly convenient to the park entrance and has plenty of family-friendly amenities. The Visitor Center: Don't skip it! We spent 2 hours there exploring the exhibits; it's a great way to introduce kids to the environment. Essentials: It gets incredibly hot. Pack twice as much water and snacks as you think you'll need.

We arrived midday, and the heat was intense, so we weren't able to hike to many of the arches. Even so, we still saw a lot just from the viewpoints and shorter walks, it's stunning no matter how you experience it. One thing to note: parking at Devils Garden is very limited and can be difficult, especially later in the day. That area is one of the most popular spots in the park. Travel tips: * Go early--ideally at sunrise--and start at the far end (Devils Garden), then work your way back toward the entrance * Bring plenty of water (more than you think you need) * Wear proper shoes--the terrain is uneven and sandy * Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are essential--the sun is strong and there's little shade * Check if timed entry reservations are required during peak season * Don't rush--plan stops and take your time at viewpoints, even if you're not hiking far Even with the heat limiting our hikes, this was an unforgettable experience. We'll definitely come back--next time earlier in the day!
