We loved this cute store and bar for our one week stay in Kapa'a. Not only were there rainbow flags all around, they had all these gourmet goods and spirits from Kauai. The best part may be their happy hour from 5pm to 6pm when the $17 cocktails become just $10. My fave was the ube cocktail. A true gem on Kauai! read more

They've got a deli side, and they've got the bar and restaurant. It is a great vibe with awesome energy. Everyone loves this place. I sat down at the bar and was warmly greeted by the bartender. She was super kind and welcoming. She recommended the Ahi Bruschetta, and it had to be one of the most delicious appetizers I've ever had. The ahi tuna was seared perfectly, and the accompanying ingredients made it an incredible dish. I also tried the Fresh Island Fish sandwhich and the soursop soda! We enjoyed it and the bartender was kind enough to offer us a ~sour brewed in Oahu when we asked for sour recommendations. They have a lip smacking collection of sauces as well. We came here when this was The Eastside, then The Local, and now Fish Bar Deli. It's on the busiest corner of Kuhio Highway in Old Town Kapa'a and is a great place to people-watch if you get a seat at the smaller bar facing the intersection. Drinks are good and strong, and $17 is not unusual for a specialty cocktail in a nice restaurant on Kauai. It is not really a family place as it is just a smallish bar with a few high tops and a takeout counter. We sat at the counter and met some other folks as a result. For drinks, I had the Paniolo Sour (I am a whiskey guy) and my partner had the Tai Me Up (a lilikoi+pineapple Mai Tai.) Both were delicious. I ordered the burger ($22) and he had the Tuna Belly Fish and Chips. Both were very good. Not the cheapest burger on the island but a great place to nip in for a quick bite and a drink. read more

The food itself was delicious however I had to only give 2 stars. We ordered take out and the restaurant only gave us 2 out of the 4 items we ordered. I didn't check the bag and we left. When I noticed half our order was missing we were already too far to turn around and come back to get it. I called and they said they refunded us the missing food but we were really disappointed. Then I still got charged the full amount and they won't refund me. They need to do better to check the full order is received. read more

Hands down my favorite place on island. I visit here at least twice a month and they all know us by now. I work in hospitality and I send all my guests here as well as my family friends. Ahi belly fish and chips to die for. Ahi bruschetta is winners. Chowder is fresh af. Vegan Kale Ceasar (chefs kiss). ALL the cocktails are mouthwatering and refreshing. Their specials are truly something special. The music changes with whoever is bartending. Sometimes its 90s R&B, sometimes its alternative, maybe reggae/island music and sometimes 70s/80s. They always got the games on or sometimes the surfing competitions around the world playing. Their market has unique items not from around here and they also support equality. Fish Bar Deli used to be called "the Local" and it used to be about food. Now it seems to be more so about the "aesthetic" and pushing a certain ideology on the passerby's in Kapaa. I have visited this restaurant numerous times, and I am not exaggerating when I say that they have messed up either my order or someone in my parties order every single time. Are they professional when they are confronted with their mistake? No, they huff and puff as if the customer wronged them by mentioning that they ordered something different or that it's been 30 minutes and their drink hasn't been made. The staff here seem to be specifically hired for their "edginess" because they seem to struggle to muster up a simple smile. There have been multiple instances where I've left telling myself, "I will never give this place another dollar", but I find myself coming back in hopes that things will be different. I am a polite and friendly customer who tips wells, but this place makes you feel punished for being a "please and thank you" sort of person. No more chances from me. I have spoken with fellow local friends on island who have had their own similar experiences. The food can be good, don't get me wrong, but it's a simple greasy diner style menu.. not the most difficult to make it tasty. The problem is the consistency- I have ordered the same things and had them from really good to really bad (over cooked and over salted). The menu is expensive for what it is and I can't understand how this style of food (like a burger) is inconsistent. Don't eat the pineapple slice if you want to taste anything the next day or two. Underripe pineapple acidity burns the lips and tongue. And last- the food service is sporadic. Appetizers brought out after the entrees, entrees brought at very different times, drinks can take any amount of time, and even dishes that were never made. During multiple visits, the waitress would take our order and never check up on the table again. So then if something was wrong with the order, it was our obligation to seek out somebody to address it. And of course that somebody would respond with positivity and warmth *sarcasm*. I am so sorry I did not want to pay more for something that I did not even order. The customer is always wrong, right? The ambiance is dreadful, it can be incredibly noisy, cramped, and windy in some spots. There are inappropriate stickers and art around the place and the staff also have some obscene tattoos on display. The management's personal beliefs and "message" is made quite clear, and the restaurant's quality seems to match. Why did I keep coming back? Well, it used to be better, cheaper, and less of an in-your-face kind of a vibe. They offered an affordable happy hour and would source some ingredients locally from Kauai which I always want to support. I also used to dine at "The Local" before the change, so old habits die hard I suppose. It could be that I am wrong to assume this business identifies as a restaurant, but if they do, I'd focus a bit more pride on the customer service and food. read more

Great quality and delicious food!! Located in the heart of downtown Kapaa. There is parking in the back of the restaurant. VERY limited seating and they do not take reservations. Not suitable for big parties but I would be willing to wait even if we had to sit separately. You must try their chicken sandwich and salads. All appetizers are delicious, drinks are all right. I wish i took a picture, but it wouldn't do this place justice. I got the protein salad because i wanted to share the poke of the day with my husband. The salad alone was the best salad and so filling. The poke was spicy for the day which made us happy. It wasn't too spicy so i think others can enjoy. My husband got the burger: THE BEST MOST FLAVORFUL BURGER. Simple enough, if you're not a fish person, get it. My teen got the chicken fingers. It's split-able between kids, but not plain by any means. I cannot gush enough over the flavor over everything. We did have to leave with a small purple potato salad, for a snack later. It was also delish with a flavorful vinegarette over typical mayo. Service was polite and friendly. They checked in on you but also didn't rush you out. the ambiance can can give a quick deli stop on your way to the beach or a nice day drink date with friends or couple. Wow, what a jewel in the crown of Kauai! We ate at many places while there and it was by far the best! We went back twice and both experiences were fantastic! First off the cocktails were inventive and delicious. We had a rift on the Mai Tai that I think was called "tai me up" that was our favorite drink we had. Tried a few others and they were all good! Appetizers were so good that the first night there, that is all we had. It was so fun to enjoy all the different flavors. The shrimp were outstanding! Also the Ahi Bruschetta was so good I couldn't stop eating it! The rainbow kale salad was fresh and tasty. That was definitely the best salad I had on the island. The next night we went back for a main course. We ended up getting a fried chicken sandwich and the stuffed cheeseburger. The portions were huge and we were not disappointed! The fries had that extra crunch I seek. The owner uses high quality oils for frying and changes the oil out regularly. She also gets most of her food from local farmers. DO NOT GO HERE. They are committing credit card fraud. We left a 20% tip and then got a fraud alert asking if we left a $100 tip on a ~$70 bill. We've called many times (5+) trying to resolve this--we understand mistakes happen--but we have been ignored or blown off every single time. We have never asked for a refund and have encouraged them to allow the server to keep their tip. We just want the extra money refunded. It shouldn't be this hard. They told us that we were not the only people who were overcharged on a tip. So do not go here unless you're willing to throw money down the drain because they will not help you resolve it. read more

Service was slow which seems to be a theme everywhere lately...I sat at the bar and waiting 10 mins before the bartender/waitress came over to ask me if I wanted anything. Ordered the Garden Isle drink which was good but not amazing. $17 for ocean vodka with some cucumber and mint. I also ordered the fish sandwich, the catch of the day was swordfish. The swordfish was in a cornmeal batter-three small pieces on a bun. It was tasty but dry-not enough sauce...doesn't come with a side that is ala carte. We ordered a drink off the menu and the waitress came over to bring a second round "we accidentally processed your order twice".. What a way to stumble upon a delicious deli with fun pantry food items for sale like pasta in the shape of hats and local hot sauces. The dining area get the open air of the beach perfect after taking a stroll between the shops in the area. The drinks were refreshingly good made with great sources ingredients. Their menu was super playful of the local fish available and I wish I went back for a full meal.
