An event not to be missed if you like to race this distance. The race registration opens in January and it usually sells out in early fall. The course is flat and fast. The race director, Mary Beth, is top notch. She has a personalized touch that I have not seen at any other race I have done in over 40 years. She will respond to every email or social media post no matter how absurd the questions asked. She knows how to host a great race. Also, she organizes the best after party of any race I have been to. There are hours of catered food and beer. Plus a kick ass DJ. It's a great time! Lastly, the overall prizes, masters prizes, and age group prizes are incredibly impressive. The finisher medals are always really cool too. If you are a runner, add this race to your list!! You can even walk to the start from anywhere in town. Or if you drive, somehow you will be able to park a block or two from the start without a problem. And, not sure if it is every year, but this year the town held a Santa bar crawl after the race ended. So pack your santa suit if you think you will have energy to run around town after running 26.2 lol.

The start of this race is about 1/2 mile away from the finish and they have free parking all the way in-between which ends up being really nice. The race itself was a mostly flat course that went from the bandstand near the beach to the state park just north of town, back through a residential area to another path and finally back to the area near the beach. I would say that about 3/4 of it was on hard packed trails that sometimes had pine needles on them. My biggest complaint for this race is that it was pretty boring. I came to the race not expecting much crowd support but at least some scenery and while the crowd support part rang mostly true, there wasn't much scenery either. Oh well, it was flat and a December marathon which I appreciated. The best part of the race actually ended up being the after party which was really awesome. The spread that they put out for the runners consisted of fruit, sausage, bacon, pancakes, ham bbq sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs and a couple of different kinds of beer! I don't know that I would call this a destination marathon but I would say that if you want a nice no frills or hills race with a great after party then this is your race.

This race is in tribute and a memorial to her inspiration. I needed Delaware for my 2nd round 50 states marathon/ultra quest and there was only a handful of events that I can participate in but of course, with time limits. I'm the type of person that loves the laid back vibe of ultra running, the generous time limits notwithstanding. With that said, I ventured over to runningintheusa website and scoured the entries to find a suitable candidate for my Delaware race that didn't have a hard cut off time. Ultras are a different breed and so I welcomed them with open arms. Once reading over the race event description, I signed up and felt happy to secure Delaware for my 2nd round marathon/ ultra circuit. The Angela Ivory memorial trail runs features a 24 hr race and a 50km fixed distance race event. In previous years, it was just the 50km but in 2023, there was the 24 hr event. The event is a small one, boasting the crazy of the crazy who love to run and race. I was surprised that the weather held up really well that weekend instead of snow and sleeting that comes with winter and January. Upon arrival to the race site, we were instructed to leave our stuff in the community pavillion tables, separated by the 24 hr peeps and the 50km peeps. The mission is 3.12 mile loops on mostly trails at the Killens Pond state park in Harrington, Delaware. 10 full loops for the 50km and obviously whatever you can do within 24 hours. Night running is fun and challenging at the same time. The overall experience here at the 2023 Angela Ivory Memorial trail run ultras was eventful, exhausting, wouldn't say worth it, but I got what I needed from Delaware, which was a timed race result that I can use to mark off a marathon/ultra ran in the state of Delaware. This was a low key race event, where the race director knew everyone and manually checked in runners after each lap. The plan was simple, have fun and enjoy the trails while racing a marathon/ultra at the same time. The course was marked with orange flags, so that was cool. I got lost twice and was unfortunately attacked by a raccoon on my last lap. Apparently, I took a wrong turn and when I backtracked, I encountered the thing and I guess it was protecting its young from randoms creeping around. Thank goodness I didn't get bitten or scratched. With that said, the trails were marked clearly, but in the dark, it was different, especially on trails and you're not local to the area. Thankfully that I knew enough during the day to know how to navigate at night (with a light) and fellow runners to guide me out of the wilderness. The trails in Killens Pond state park were well groomed and suitable for running. The event was come as you go, run as you please. There's no time limit for the 50km, since there was the 24 hr event running concurrently. Best to bring your own food and drinks if you're doing the event, so you don't have to worry about options. The race director is friendly and will help you out if you need. The Angela Ivory Memorial Ultra trail runs is held annually at the Killens Pond state park near Harrington, Delaware. Race day is generally on a Saturday in late January. Be prepared for all types of weather including snow. But then again, if it's snowing enough to warrant the closure of the park, then the race will likey be canceled. I've been told that Delaware rarely gets substantial snowfalls in late January, but it just depends on the year and gauge it individually. In 2023, the 50km event is free but the 24 hr event cost $50, which directly benefits the state of Delaware state parks, due to the useage for the event. All registration is held online, which accepts major credit cards, I believe. As far as race day parking goes, best to get in by 8am since the race starts for both events at 8:30am. It's a fun group mix of expert, those who love trail distance running, and those who just love trails. Thankful for meeting new friends at the race since my ride had to leave soon after his finish, but I asked around and found someone willing to drive me back to the hotel for the night. Runners are the best! If you need Delaware for your 50 states marathon quest or just want to run an ultra distance, consider coming to Delaware in January and run this race. Definitely a good one, but be wary of wild animals who make their home in the park. 5.0 stars for the overall experience, despite the raccoon attack. Support local! A+

Although exciting, and the overall experience I had was outstanding, a good part of actually watching the race, to me, was somewhat boring. I didn't end up sleeping in the stands but almost did, and I did catch my brother with his eyes closed. There were about three or four cautions during the race not including the stages or competition caution, and they were for cars that went loose into the wall, or a piece of equipment on the track. Nothing special or spectacular but the one car did catch on fire. Thankfully no one was injured or seriously hurt. It was amazing to see the top cars in this particular race who were on point really take command of the track. The first car that got a lap down was on lap 13 according to my brother. Although COVID rules were being advised, and you needed to wear your mask to get into the track, no one was wearing them once in the stands. It was a mix of on or off when walking around, and wearing when in line to get food or use the bathroom. The facility did not sell all seats so there was space and I was glad they did not sell all the seats to do so. They were offering vaccination shots, so that's pretty cool. They were also giving out free masks. All staff were wearing their masks the whole time. The fan zone included food, clothing, a car show, the military, other car and tire company demos and games to play. I won some stress ball tires and low end tire gauges, and also got a free t-shirt. I loved that you were allowed to bring in your own food and drink as long as you followed their requirements. A hell of a lot of people were tailgating, and my brother hooked up into a cornhole game. Everyone was extremely friendly and well behaved in the stands and also outside in the lots and fan zone. I highly recommend bringing ear protection. Again BRING EAR PROTECTION. I took out my earphones for the last five laps, and I was dumbfounded at how loud the race really is with the sound reverberating off the massive aluminum stands. We were in the last (top) row (46) of the Allison stands and had a perfect view of the whole track. I'd also bring sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen. If you have can headphones, bring them. You could also rent scanners which I did not do, but they would have been helpful. $96 each for the tickets, $10 parking, brought our own food, and an awesome day with family. Was almost a little more expensive when my brother lost his Apple AirPod at the top of the stands, but luckily a fan a row down found it before it dropped to the ground. Congrats to Alex Bowman who won, and did it all after taking the lead during an outstanding pit stop jumping two places to get it. He then held it to the end.

The circuit moves are displayed on a whiteboard at the front of the class so you can keep track of what you're supposed to be doing. However, the baseline level of this class is definitely not the "intense" workout they claim it to be. The weights put out by the instructor were VERY light for some of the moves (ex. - one 20 lb dumbbell for b-stance deadlifts, a 15 lb db for snatches). I know HIIT classes are not good for building strength, but it seems like they should be challenging their regulars more than this. I didn't see the instructor encourage anyone to pick up a heavier weight. Luckily, they had heavier dumbbells on the side of the room available to swap out, so you can make this workout as challenging as you want it to be. The format itself is great - twice through the circuit, 8 60-second strength moves with about a 30-second cardio or core move and then a 30-second short rest in between. TL;DR: If you are looking for a programmed workout and are comfortable modifying moves/swapping out weights, this is a great drop-in studio.
