This church has been more than a church, it's become a home and a real family. Before I came here,…read moreI was church hopping a lot. I went to other churches and people were nice and friendly (as all churches tend to be), but I never felt like I fit in..oftentimes, people have already formed their cliques or were already overwhelmingly big to really find your niche... However, when i came to this church, people do more than the "hi and bye and hope to see you next sunday and have a good week"...they want to get to know about you and really absorb you into their community. The music is phenomenal and their service is always inspiring. Our pastor uses films/videos in his sermons and really touches upon relevant day-to-day issues that affect our lives - they can even be really funny at times. Our pastor has a great sense of humor and faith in God, which makes him so relatable and easy to talk to. There's also a great young adults group that has a mixture of students and working professionals that really gets you connected to others going through the same questions/struggles you are going to. This is a really great place for people with all different spiritual levels and walks in life, whether you've been a Christian your whole life or if you are wondering who God is, you will find acceptance, love, and support here.

God really does fantastic things through this church. I started attending in August and the first…read morething I noticed was that it was insanely diverse. I mean, there's diverse, and then there's a small church that represents about 20 different countries diverse, (20 might be a little bit of an exaggeration but the real number is not far off). The second thing I noticed was that the music was phenomenal. Some of the singers are fantastic and some of the musicians are top notch, especially the pianist, who went to Berklee College of Music. The pastor is spectacular as well. He's always willing to talk and will probably take you out to lunch. During the after church lunch/refreshment thing, he makes an effort to reach out to everyone in the congregation. His messages get to the heart of the gospel and he knows what separates the gospel from religion. He'll motivate you to grow closer to Jesus without sugar coating the Bible like those that preach the prosperity gospel. Not only is the congregation diverse, but it's super welcoming. Almost overwhelmingly welcoming. My first experience here was awesome. I slipped into the church and sat at the back and went unnoticed, (or so I thought). Then I went to the after church lunch thing and sat down. While eating my food, I was greeted by about 4 different people. Each one was super excited to see me and were truly interested in what I had to say. The pastor came and invited to be a part of different groups at the church. If you are looking for a place where you can sit at the back of the church without being noticed/greeted then this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a Christian community to be a part of that truly needs you and wants you no matter your background, then this is the place for you.

We actually visited a few times last summer when we were testing the waters of a possible move to the Boston area. Sundays: Curtis' preaching of the Bible is incredibly applicable to our everyday lives. That is, we are simultaneously challenged to live out the Gospel by loving our neighbor/city/family/friends in practical and tangible ways as well as empowered by the Gospel to do that loving. Curtis and the other elders are consistently walking around before the service begins to say hello and check in, which is encouraging. Worship is very encouraging as well - a great mix of hymns and contemporary music that are centered on Jesus. Childcare at the 9am service is well run and safe. Our daughter loves being with the other kids and we are confident she's well taken care of. This also allows us to focus on the sermon, which is a huge blessing! Community Groups - We attend a rather large community group that has also been very edifying as we come together to discuss and apply the sermon text from the week before. We have challenging and encouraging conversations followed by smaller group prayer where we get to know one another better and be in one another's lives. We're grateful! *I realize I used "encouraging" a lot in this review - that's because I am! By that I mean that I see and here - am heartened and enlivened by the love of God in the Gospel of Jesus through every point of contact with this local body of believers in Christ. We are consistently and continually pointed to the Scriptures as God's Word and Jesus as our only hope for knowing him and entering into relationship with him.

The pastor is very intelligent, definitely someone who knows a lot about theology and bible study. The worship is basically standard contemporary style, think Chris Tomlin. The sermons are very much expository style, usually preaching through one book at a time. Again, bible study is definitely a strength of the pastor. As far as theology goes, think John Piper or Wayne Grudem. They are reformed, but not really the types that obsess all the time about being a pure 5-point Calvinist. They are certainly not cessationists, but you probably won't hear anyone shouting in tongues during their services. There is no pressure with the offerings. They are really open about finances and the budget. Demographically there are a lot of families there, many homeschoolers I think. Mainly professional suburban families, if I recall correctly. Since the last review was posted, they have gotten a nice building right near Bradford Common. I think that attendance is around 100ish at this point, too.

It's odd to rank a church by stars, since it's never really the church that makes the church, it's the people (remember that song?..haha) But this building is a place that harbors security, peace and very fond memories for me. Unfortunately I got out of the church-going habit when I went to college and have since moved. I'm really sad because this church had a large congregation when I was much younger, and over the years the attendance has steadily declined. I think much has to do with just the generations going through. There happened to be a lot of children when I was younger, and a lot of grandparents, and then we all grew up and parted ways, and many of the older congregation members became housebound or passed away. Small and nontraditional as it is (as some kids affecitonately called it, the brown church!), the RUMC is a church that will welcome you wholeheartedly and leave you feeling very peaceful and at ease. The atmosphere is casual and family-oriented, and there are a couple of fairs each year as well. There aren't any big choirs (which I always wished there were), and there's a small organ, but the humble nature of its atmosphere completely adds to its genuine message of bonding together and doing good in the world.
