We were on a family vacation where we landed at the Knoxville airport and needed to stay overnight…read more It wasn't a destination town for us but I decided since we'd never been to Tennessee before to get a tour before we headed east. I looked online and found KISS Caboose was free and goes based on tips, which I thought was fantastic since we had two children under 10, that wouldn't appreciate the tour as much as my husband and I would. I called to make a reservation and Gina picked up even though she was in the middle of a busy event. I told her the day and times that we would be available and she hooked us up with one of her best tour guides, Jennifer. I cannot express how excellent the tour was. I guess the best way to put it is I want to live in Knoxville now! It was an hour long in a adorable little bus. She was able to show us historical sites and buildings, and some of the local must go to shops and murals. She even pulled over and took pictures of our family in front of the murals! Coming from the west coast her accent was delightful and her knowledge was astounding. I was never interested in history but she left me with historical knowledge that I think I will never forget. She met us at the Art Museum which is free and also AWESOME with a great gift shop which she also recommended. If you are in a very small party of 2 to 5 people max, then please check them out, even if you're a local, you may learn a few things.

It was known at that time as the finest home in Tennessee. The structure is significant for its original interior and exterior architectural features and its period decorative art collection. The home is said to be haunted, and I feel quite drawn to it, and did feel a presence, will have to keep coming back. It sat empty for many years, and was refurbished in 1952. The Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities took it over. It is a historic treasure, you step back in time. They have great events all year long. Love the free vintage baseball games in the summer where they dress up all old timey and play without gloves. The candlelight tours around Halloween and Christmas are beautiful and actually different from the tours they give normally during the year so you can learn even more. Also love the Christmas marketplace and spring marketplace to shop local with a great variety of vendors. Staff is so nice and it's a great stop on a series of tours if you're interested in historic homes in the area.

Needless to say I (as well as my Mom) was surprised that the Festival shifted to World's Fair Park. It is much BIGGER than I remember. I guess Market Square wasn't big enough to handle all these cool booths. Honestly it is much less "Fair Like" then the Washington County Fair in Hillsboro. No rides and unnecessary fried food. Mostly cool art, tons of crafts, and I was able to grab a cool shady spot to chill and write my review. I was really hoping to spot one of my old(er) friends from Knoxville while I was walking around. I don't usually last long at these festivals...my interest seems to wain fairly quickly, but people watching is fun too. Kinda reminds me of sitting on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. Yup it always comes back to New York. Y'all come back now, ya hear?

There are differing categories of chalk art with winners are chosen at the end of the day (and labeled as such). There are food trucks and other vendors selling goods and often activities for the littles, and live music to enjoy. Just note that it gets crowded on the Sat. of the event and if you want to avoid that (and it hasn't rained, go the day after to enjoy the art walk without the heavy crowds.

When we arrived, the lady up front for our check-in asked how we had heard of them. I'm like... "Uh... It's art. We go where art is. We love art." I couldn't think of any other answer that fit the boxes she was checking. I love art, and that's where you can find me. It didn't fit any of her checkboxes, she waited a moment like she was waiting for me to say something else before saying, "Oh, that's a new reason we're going to have to add" or something like that. One of the usher girls understood what I was saying. No shame on the lady... it was just odd. I don't just hear about museums. I see if a city has one and I go. In my world, that's a 100,000 percent normal thing. I still laugh about it. You'll have fun here. If you've visited major art museums in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Philly, Chicago, NY, or SF, you'll still have fun here, but it won't be the famous paintings you're looking for. If you're in Knoxville and have time to spare, I'd visit, but it's not an absolute must-do thing.
