I couldn't have coped without the support of these wonderful people, and patient explanations of how the process worked, especially as a lot of it was done long distance via email and telephone. I highly recommend their services for anyone needing a discreet, empathic and caring funeral director in the greater Brisbane area, even if you're interstate or overseas!

This place is awesome and extremely interesting. Apparently I have a number of in-laws buried here…read morebut there are so many interesting tombstones to read that I lost interest in finding them. Instead I spent my day wandering the paths searching for macabre pieces of history. What is interesting is the number of Orthodox Russians buried in this cemetery. Those criminals hanged at the nearby Boggo Road Jail are also here. This place is worth a exploring. And if not interested in the tombs, then there are some glorious trees to rest under. You can enter the cemetery in a number of ways, and you can even ride your bike through it. I suggest grabbing a coffee from across the Green Bridge at Queensland Uni and then walking across and through it. This way you are also privy to the information signs that provide a bit of background history to the cemetery and the surrounding park.
Funnily enough I feel somewhat at home in the South Brisbane Cemetery. I would visit it often on my…read moreway to and from the University of Queensland. At the beginning of the year it was quite flood damaged, with inches of mud covering a lot of the graves, and dirt washed away in other places. At the risk of sounding very insensitive, it did make some graves look like the undead had risen. That just made me like the place all the more. I would often go and read the historical information on plaques in and around the Cemetery. It is such an interesting piece of Brisbane's history. The cemetery is peaceful except for the odd bird buzzing around. However, do be careful when it is wet as all the pathways become insanely slippery and very treacherous. I highly recommend you go there and have a look for yourself, whether you have family there or not.
What kind of weirdo gives a cemetery 5 stars? I know it seems strange…read more BUT... The Toowong Cemetery is one of the most peaceful, tranquil and gorgeous places to have a stroll through if you're in the Inner West. If you're going to walk through it, begin at the top (Birdwood Terrace entry) and wind your way down the steep descent. Give yourself some time too- it's something of a labyrinth and you can get lost. The Toowong Cemetery was originally called the Brisbane General Cemetery and was allocated as the eternal home of residents of greater Milton past. It's been open since 1875. This probably explains why there are trees growing out of cemented plots, and other trees that seem to all but consume some gravestones. The cemetery isn't orderly. It's overgrown with old, wild strangler figs, and some parts of the cemetery look more like ruins. There's something quietly poignant and pretty about strolling through the gravestones and reading epitaphs more than 100 years old. The graves all have character too. Some have route iron fences around them, others bear huge marble crosses, others are more humble and have a small rose bush planted at the head of the plot. For those of you who have a bit of a thing about cemeteries, you'll be glad to know that there are gimmicky Ghost Tours you can take (see website). If you enter from Birdwood Terrace, the cemetery 'technically' doesn't shut. You won't be able to get in outside of business hours if you try enter through the gates. If you're brave enough to wander around there at night, you will find your resident goths and occultists sitting on gravestones by candlelight.

Well, not really life I guess - what I meant is that it's still a functioning cemetery so people are still getting interred here (for a hefty fee I imagine if local real estate prices are any guide). For me it's a quiet spot for reflection - and a place I used to terrify myself at when I was a teenager. After a awesome hang time on Mt Cootha I'd often end up parked outside this cemetary hearing stories about cultists and vampire worshippers who were just waiting to jump into my mum's Nissan Pintara and suck my blood.

But my beloved brother suddenly passed away so the Smith funeral was called by my nephew/niece ! They responded immediately, communicated & worked well with the family ! I am so glad & happy especially during the final moment at the chapel, we were able to view him for the last time in a nice coffin with a beautiful, freshly arranged multi colored big bulb roses on top ! The Smith representatives greeted & distributed the program to the people, during my Brother's celebration of life, I gave my Eulogy, sound system & the music were perfect, there were Kleenex & cold drinks, what touched me the most was that the Smith representative vow everytime in front of my brother's coffin, what a good sign of respect !
