Bonus points for having an attached restroom. I enjoyed a visit here when the weather was warm and the air moves through the shelter to keep it from getting too stuffy. With the wide open spaces of the field my pasty body appreciated the shade.

But, for beginners, it's much more friendly, as there's less trees to hit, and the holes are generally just easier. For sledding, there's a couple large hills that are great to go down on, but they're a bit torn up, and could use some patching. It's far enough from Cottage Grove Rd to be quiet. I'd call it a quaint park. Unfortunately, there aren't many big trees around to provide shade. The playground set is completely exposed to the sun, as are the benches. Any children and parents visiting this park may find themselves rather uncomfortable on a hot day. I didn't see any water fountains either, which wouldn't help matters. There is a full basketball court, but it doesn't appear to be lined. It also lacks shade so there may be better options unless you're just up for some quick practice. Like most public parks in Madison, no dogs allowed.

North Star Park is a neighborhood park. Don't expect anything fancy - it's mainly just a large,…read moregrassy area in the middle of a subdivision. There is a basketball court and some playground equipment, but the main attraction is just a nice, open area to hang out in. My boyfriend and I ended up there on graduation weekend when we wanted to enjoy some time in the sun but didn't want to brave the Terrace or other over-populated venues. The park was almost totally dead - there was one family by the playground but that's it. It offered a nice and relaxing afternoon where we could play some music and not feel like we were disturbing anyone. Things keeping the park from getting over three stars are that there are no bathroom facilities (so many parks lack them, which is awkward if you're there for any length of time) and it's very exposed - both in that there's no shade and that you're surrounded by houses. I can't knock North Star for what it is, but we'll probably keep an eye out for some more foliage-heavy spots in the future.
