The Finlaggan Trust is responsible for the stewardship of the once fortress belonging to the King of the Isles. The castle ruins in the middle of this loch shows the strategic importance of this location. Among the castle ruins is a gravesite showing one of the most intake gravestones depicting an armored soldier. While you are walking around the ruins you will find reading panels giving you a more in depth look into the Lord's life. While the visitor center is open seas only, the castle ruins are accessible year round. read more

Steeped in history, this collection of artifacts has a very calm and tranquil, otherworldly vibe to it; very peaceful. I visited in March just after a big rainstorm and the area was empty, gift shop closed, nobody in sight. I strolled through the muddy grass making my way to island ruins. Once there, I marveled at the history and the craftsmanship of the walls still standing and reveled in the grassy but otherwise beautifully sparse landscape. Take the narrow, gravely road on your way to Port Askaig, its worth the effort. read more

Just back from Islay and visiting Finlaggan was still one of the most humbling experiences of the trip. Amazing spot steeped in history of the Lords of the Isles. Well cared for artifacts and old structures that take you back in time as soon as you step on the island within an island. What made this time different was that we got up and went at the crack of dawn so we could watch the sunrise. One other thing... was it had rained so much the day before we had to wade through quite deep water to get to the bridge. A reminder to always be dressed for any weather when in Scotland. read more

A spot of very old history. This was an entertaining stop in our day. Even without any connection to the Donald clan we enjoyed the interpretation and notes in the museum and seeing the site of an ancient settlement in the lake. I am a bit tight fisted but did not resent the small fee for entry as the museum was so well done. It was a nice glimpse into history. read more
