I have 10 wine club memberships throughout San Diego and Finca is my absolute favorite. First of all, they focus on Spanish and Portuguese wines mostly, which makes it really fun to be able to focus in on regions and learn the difference about the terroir. They have a rotating tapas menu of the absolute best food that you have ever had, I'm surprised this place isn't in the Michelin guide yet. Selfishly I never want to tell people about this place because I love it so much, but you have to know and you have to go here. We sit at the bar every single Wednesday to try their new flight of wines and learn about what makes each one special. Sometimes you get lucky enough to actually meet the winemaker, and no matter what week you come on, they are actually talking you through the tasting notes and growing practices for that specific wine. I have tried food here that I would have never tried anywhere else and fallen absolutely in love with it. For example, I always thought I was the kind of person that would never eat an anchovy or a sardine. They have a sardines over potatoes dish that completely evangelized me! Thinly slice sardines over golden potatoes in a garlic, lemon and Dill oil. Yum! I'm thinking about it now and salivating. One thing everybody will tell you when they come. There is how much they love all the glassware and the beautiful and intentional touches throughout. They'll never share with you what antique stores they get their glassware from, but you'll know just how much care they put into it when you go. read more

Excellent service and attentive staff - and definitely distinct from the other tapas restaurant down the street. It's a bit loud inside once they start filling up - but they have a dog friendly patio. You wouldn't guess all the tasty morsels inside from the size of the restaurant - but everything was fantastic-kudos to the chef. The eggplant dip with chips is an excellent starter, the bone marrow toast was so delicious, the octopus was tender and not chewy - and we had a few other dishes - but those really made an impression on me. I would recommend making reservations - and the outside is quieter than inside - but there isn't much to look at outside. Excellent dinner - just amazing! read more

We came here after watching a live jazz band nearby. I was able to get last minute reservations! Since it's tapas style, we decided to share the patatas bravas, hamachi crudo, and New York strip tataki. The potatoes were plenty, crudo was light, and tataki was very flavorful. Finca Restaurant is located on a quiet corner of North Park Way and Grimm Avenue. Large windows face the street. There are shades that help with the afternoon sun pouring into the building. At sundown, the shades automatically retract to reveal the streetscape. The dining room is divided into three sections---the bar, the main dining room, and a less atmospheric back room, which I think they call the "Catalonia Room". The welcome at the door by Victor was exemplary. Victor stopped by to check on me during dinner and even retrieved a book I had inadvertently left on the banquette. Service by Cassidy-Noel was friendly and professional. She decanted the Tempranillo and made sure my glass never went dry. As to the meal selections, I enjoyed the grilled sourdough bread with herbed butter with charred onion, served with a side of pickled radish. For the appetizer, I selected the Yellow Tail Crudo, charmingly-served in a gold-rimmed vintage serving dish. The main course was a New York Strip Tataki in a Ponzu Sauce. For dessert, there was a sticky toffee pudding topped with sliced figs and dates. A special drink was offered with the dessert. No espresso is available. read more

Finca almost cost me my marriage. Literally. Booked a table for Valentine's Day almost a month in advance. A week later, they converted to the valentine's pre-set menu with a deposit. Fine. We show up early to check in and they can only offer us bar seating with an hour wait for a table. We're pretty sure a couple who showed up to their reservation afterwards got seated right after we did. My wife and I decided to leave as we didn't want to pay the pre-set menu to only eat it at the bar, where no one really waited us anyway. My wife and I never get to go out and we finally saved up enough money to go out for Valentine's so that I could make her feel special. After hours of getting ready, she was crushed and heartbroken when we had to just leave after 20 minutes of sitting at the bar with no one to take our order. Buyer beware. read more

Not a restaurant for creatures of habit who might have reservations if dishes they are used to are tampered with. We were open with some reservations. The food/the good: -Diablo shrimp, yummy delicious, not spicy, cooked to perfection -Grilled pork shoulder, grilled and served with achiote sauce makes it an interesting dish. Grilled hangar steak -Yellowtail crudo, fresh, yummy -Shishito peppers, fun and yummy additions of flavor to a classic - Dessert: Sticky toffee pudding. Yum! The ok: -Beef tartare, liked the beef, didn't care for the bread it's served on. The bad: -Patatas bravas, I wanted to prove previous yelp recommendations on this one wrong, bc you never know, unfortunately yelpers are right. Not good. All in all great experince. Came here last night for happy hour and really enjoyed it. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. We tried the ahi appetizer, vegetable ceviche, and steak frites. We still had to wait 10-15 min to get seated but since it was cold they did allow us to wait inside The restaurant itself I had a beautiful bar and is on the smaller side but had room for bigger parties in the back. Food was delicious. Since it's tapas they recommend 2-3 dishes per person. We over-ordered and we were a little too full at the end to finish everything but we enjoyed some noteworthy food! We got 1. Companion bread Sourdough and butter- house made butter was divine 2. Bone marrow- star and favorite dish of the night 3. Patatas bravas- loved the jalapeño crema on this. A bit of a kick but definitely not too spicy. This is a hefty dish though so it can fill you up 4. Italian dumplings- just ok, didn't blow me away 5. The place is very cute and modern, we were greeted when we arrived and when we sat at the bar. The mixologist was kind and knowledgeable which they helped narrow down my choices. I went with the the G&T which had gin in it and eucalyptus. Drink was refreshing the only thing was that my friend order the same drink but we had different glasses. Hers was roller and rounder than mine which looking at seems she got more than me but not sure. Finca is located in North Park just across from Tribute pizza. We were able to snag an early reservation for a weeknight. Prior to arriving, we got a text notification that our table was ready and we were able to get seated right away when we checked in. The place was fairly empty since it had just opened and it was a Monday. For drinks, I split a house sangria with my friend. It came in a decanter and two glasses with ice. It was fun to pour but it was a bit viscous than I'm used to, almost a bloody mary consistency, though not as thick. For food and for our party of 3, we got 6 items and we were stuffed. It certainly helped to order 2 "filler" type dishes and next time we might just pick 1 instead of 2. The fillers were patatas bravas and the mushroom st. Jacques and those mushrooms probably were one of my favorite dishes of the night! Other favorites included the hamachi crudo and the New York strip tataki. I loved the freshness of the crudo balanced with the fat of the avocado and the little crunch texture from the onion. The fermented scallop ponzu sauce on the tataki was amazing. Some dishes seemed more interesting on paper and didn't quite wow us in reality, such as the pork belly and cocoa nibs. First, this was a difficult dish to share because it came as one diagonal slice of toast, a slice of pork belly with the nibs on top, and then this spread of banana bread flavor. Have been here for happy hour twice within 2 weeks! Dare I say they have the BEST sangria I have ever had, and it's on the happy hour menu!! They have great rotating wines on the happy hour menu as well so you can always try something new each time you go! Please also do yourself a favor and get the steak tartare (also on HH) and the lamb meatballs. The pate toast is pretty good too, a nice sweet and savory combo. Did the price fix menu on NYE. We got a 9 pm table. Took them about 30 minutes to seat us but fine it's NYE. We get to the table and start ordering and they are out of items on the price fix menu. We are forced to order the cauliflower which no one in our group really likes but then it comes and is drenched in cheese sauce and the pickled mushrooms taste like pure vinegar. Since we were the last table we felt like they were rushing us out the whole time so they could clean up. If you are going to run this on NYE at least make it a good experience for all the customers including the ones at the end of your shift. 1st course: Cruda was meh. Tasted a little fishy. 2nd course: Out of the Iberico ham so forced to order soggy cauliflower 3rd course: Steak and Frites was pretty good. The lobster cannelloni was meh. Desert. We had a large group reservation at Finca and had a great time! The events manager, Joe, was responsive and attentive to our needs, and they created a pre fixe menu for our group which was delicious. I like finca. I like the wine and the appetizers. It's pretty inside. The servers are truly hit or miss. I've had some incredible kind ladies as servers and some guys who need attitude adjustments. I asked the waiter if I could see the line items after I accidentally clicked no on printed receipt. He huffed and puffed "why did you click no receipt then" and rolled his eyes about it. On a corner opposite the former US Post Office in North Park is a new tapas and wine bar. Finca debuted to the public late last week with daily operating hours that begin at 5 pm. The place has close to a capacity of 100 when you count the outdoor patio, dining room, and bar area. Parking is tough to find although there is a large multi-level deck with reasonable rates if you head west a few more blocks on North Park Way. I sat at a small table in the middle of the dining area. The list of tapas on the menu was impressive with over 20 choices. Three large plates and three desserts completed the food offerings. I asked the waitress about a few items because there were no photos and the descriptions were limited. My choices were the following... * Pork Balls - soy maple mayo, bonito flakes * Charred Octopus - rich tomato sauce, potatoes, Kalamata olives * Char-Grilled Chicken Thighs - dried chile rub, cabbage chowchow relish The Pork Balls were the chef's take on takoyaki with pork being the protein instead of minced octopus. Plenty of bonito flakes were sprinkled on top of the six fritters. The Charred Octopus was served in a hearty tomato sauce, however it was disappointing because it needed more meat. There was barely an entire tentacle when you added up the four pieces in the dish. I ordered the Chicken Thighs as an additional course after consuming the first two. It turned out to be my favorite because of the contrast from the sweet cabbage relish. Finca has been busy since the grand opening as I visited over the weekend and encountered a fully booked venue. On this return trip, it was less packed, and I received stellar service from the waitstaff. If you are a wine connoisseur, then this may be your spot for not only rare vintages but also a dedicated bottle shop that opens at noon. read more

Went on a Saturday with a reservation, and our table was ready and waiting. We did have to wait a bit for our server. It seemed he had a lot of tables that he was waiting on. He was very nice when he came over though. He was happy to offer suggestions. We ordered a bottle of red, which we got to try a sample before going with it. If you order 2 bottles you get a discount, but not everyone was drinking wine, so we went with one. They do have a very nice selection, and the bottles are a great way to go. Among 4 of us we ordered 6 items plus a dessert. Some were smaller, some larger. I would say all the dishes were good, but I probably liked the NY steak the best. Most things I would get again, but probably not all. I see they change the menu around here and there too, so you won't always get the same options. I think the prices here are fair in comparison to other local places with sharing plates. We did have a few service issues, but I am sure they continue to work out kinks. I definitely think they will keep getting better, and I plan to return soon. I love the concept and their ability to find a unique niche in SD. read more

Let's start with the service. It was amazing. They were very nice and they really took the time to explain everything. Our server was especially attentive and thoughtful with his suggestions and the order of how the food would come out. I really appreciated it. This does not have to do anything with the restaurant but if you haven't been to Northpark before - expect difficulty finding parking because it's scarce. The restaurant is nice but I will say it is faced in an unfortunate direction because most of the wall is a window and they open at 5 PM so with our days being longer now you will have the sun at A Setting angle around that time and if you are facing the window wyou Will be blinded and if you are facing with your back against the window, your neck will get very warm. I did wish that they had curtains or blinds as an option. Onto the food. Everything was fun to try once but the flavor combinations were mostly OK. Eggplant dip and housemade chips -the eggplant dip was very good but the chips were a bit on the burnt side and I couldn't taste the seasoning very much because they mentioned there was miso seasoning. I was actually wishing I had some pita to eat with the eggplant dip instead. Duck confit with Cherry mustard sauce - this was just a giant ball of fried duck meat and I was not entirely a huge fan of that. The cherry mustard sauce on the other hand is delicious. Mushroom St Jacques -this was basically a lot of mushrooms on cheese and you can't really go wrong with anything and cheese. But nothing special. Pork belly with grilled banana and a slice of sourdough -this whole combination of things was not my favorite. The cacao nibs on the Pork belly made me hesitant but I'm willing to try everything once so I made sure I had everything in my one bite. I put a little bit of the mashed grilled banana on my sourdough with some pork belly and the cacao- it was interesting and I probably would not order this again. I wish the pork belly had a little more seasoning... Fried chicken and caviar - the name sounded fun and just like the previous dish I made sure that in my bite I had the dip and the caviar on the chicken to get all the flavors in my mouth at once. The explosion of the ocean flavor with the fried chicken was a lot. Not my favorite way of eating chicken tenders. The seasoning on the fried chicken looked really good but it was definitely more looks because I couldn't taste anything. Fingerling potatoes with jalapeño crema - so when this was described to me I was expecting crushed potatoes but they came out whole. There was no evidence of any crushing. The potatoes also tasted a bit green. I basically got a pile of boiled potatoes covered in a jalapeño sauce. The sauce was good. I wished they were fried or crispy or something at least but they were not. Beef carpaccio, shrimp and scallop sausage, horseradish sauce on a brioche - this was a lot bigger than I expected and it was tasty. read more

Wife and I made a reservation for the second night it was open. We had lower expectations because it's just opened and sometimes it takes a while to gel. Not the case! They were already on point. Food was phenomenal. Service was perfect and the establishment was nicely curated. I am taking 1 star off for 2 reasons, we sat at the bar but they should remove 1-2 seats as my wife and were too close to our neighbors and at times touching. The other was although the menu gives you a wine bottle price for here and to go, the receipt shows a $15 corkage fee which will upset some people. I understand that they vaguely have on the menu the price to drink there but on the receipt, I would just put that price. Saying you're charging a corkage fee makes me want to just bring my own wine. We ordered several Tapas and were very pleased. We will definitely be back to try more food from the large menu. read more

They had their soft opening on Thursday night and we went last night. We had a reservation for 5:15 and got there around 5:05 and checked in with the person at the door. They asked if we minded sitting at the bar. We definitely did not. I will say they need to remove 1 or 2 chairs as it is pretty tight. We sat at the end so we were good. It is a beautiful place. Cozy yet still a pretty large restaurant. It got busy fast. Everyone was super friendly and the owner gave me a wine suggestion. He really listened to what I wanted and I enjoyed it. Note that on the receipt if you buy a bottle it will have the bottle price and also say "corkage fee" but it equals the total amount of the wine listed on the menu. The food is tapas style which we love! I like trying lots of different things. I will let you know what we ordered and how each item was below. New York strip tataki- wonderful! The ponzu was so good and the steak was perfect. Charred octopus- it is in a tomato sauce and it looks like it may be a bit much but it was such a nice light sauce and it was very tasty. Chicken and caviar- I felt like the chicken was a bit salty and overpowered the caviar. Grilled sunchokes- I didn't realize the sauce was so spicy. The sunchokes were very tasty but a bit too spicy for me. Chocolate caramel pudding for dessert. Perfect portion- not too sweet. Very nice. So far... Best Restaurant in town!!! It was a culinary experience, I felt transported to so many different places but all at once. First we chose our wine from the wine racks,yes, like a store (at store prices) then we sat and started enjoying so many different Tapas that we were surprised but in a good way. We were tasting charred octopus and then fried chicken with CAVIAR, patatas bravas and then shredded pork cachapas, baked cauliflower but then hamachi tiradito, surf & turf, and duck confit croquettes... OMG never ends, one tapa tops the next, this Cheff is a creative machine like no other. What can I say? I had the pleasure of eating at Finca for the first time last night and let me tell you, it was one of the best dinning experiences I've had in a long time, and in the heart of NP! I love meals that are long with lots of flavors shared between friends and that's exactly what this was. The service was very attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Every person from the manager to the waiters to the host was very friendly and helpful. The ambiance was bustling and cozy. I started with the sangria which was clearly fresh and top notch quality ingredients. Very refreshing. The food was delectable - a wonderful and complimentary mix of flavors and textures. I loved the Italian dumplings and fresh bread made locally from scratch. We ended with the cheesecake which was sitting on top of crunchy goodness making every bite spectacular. I'd say the only disappointing thing was the price for the size of the plates. Very very small portions for a pretty big price. Oh and I wish they had more reds by the glass. For such an extensive wine list, the options for red by the glass are pretty limited. However the waitress offered a glass from a bottle as an option, I just didn't take her up on it. We have now been to Finca twice for dinner, and I can honestly say that we have loved every single thing we have eaten! The menu is filled with exquisitely executed, delicious, shareable treats, and with a variety that ensures that it will appeal to everyone in your party. The Companion Bread Sourdough takes something fairly basic and makes it delectable. The Catch of the Day Crudo is the perfect blend of fresh fish, spiciness from the Fresno chile, sweetness of the orange, and creaminess of the avocado. The Italian Dumplings are {chef's kiss}, and the Hangar Steak is a must-order every time. Honestly, I feel like I could list everything we ate as a must-order, and I can't think of many restaurants where I could say that. Outside of the food, the cocktails are creative and the wine list is wonderful! On our first visit, our server, Cassidy, helped us select a Spanish wine that our whole table was raving about. On our second visit, we were seated in someone else's section, but Cassidy saw and recognized us, and she came over to say hello. When it came time for us to order wine, our server had Cassidy come back over to help...and she actually remembered what wine we had ordered the previous time! I hope that Finca recognizes what an absolute GEM they have in Cassidy! We will likely request to be seated in her section for all future reservations, because she is just that good. One of the owners came over to chat with us and ask how things were; the table's response was a unanimous "amazing." I was meeting up with a friend after work for dinner on a Monday evening and she suggested we try Finca. We made a reservation for 6 PM. I walked past the storefront a couple of times before my friend directed me to the restaurant, as you cannot really see the sign from 29th street. Anyway, when we walked in, the place had a sleek and modern look. I really liked the look of the bar area. We then were greeted and were given a table on the side of the restaurant, but with the sun starting to set, there was such a glare that we had to move to a corner, where there was still a glare, but was better. I think some sun shades would be an easy fix. Anyway, we spent some time studying the wine menu. Wines by the glasses were limited, but the bottle menu was large and diverse. We chose a basic price range and tried a couple of tastes. When we weren't completely happy with our tastes, our server asked us a few questions and came back with another taste and found us the perfect bottle. Our server was great throughout the evening by making recommendations on the menu, answering questions and coming back to check on us. Service was excellent. Our waters were refilled readily throughout the evening. The menu was creative and we ordered some small dishes to share including the charred eggplant dip with house chips, the funky olives, mushrooms St. Jacques, and the surf and turf toast. I thought everything was delicious and I am not even sure which was my favorite. The surf and turf toast was pretty original as far as the flavor profile, and the mushrooms were rich and decadent. We were having such a blast catching up and decided to stay after dinner for another drink. I imagine it would have been different had it been a busier night, but we actually were there a total of four hours and did not feel rushed at all. I highly recommend Finca. read more

My wife and I have been wanting to check this place out for a long time and I decided to make a reservation for her birthday. It's a chic place and decorated nicely, lots of green. It is also a lot larger than it appears. We arrived at 5pm, just in time for happy hour. There's a great selection of wines and cocktails on the happy hour menu. We went the tempranillo wine and really enjoyed it. It was on the dry red wine which really appeals to both of our wine palates. We started off with the charred eggplant dip and cured lomo. We liked both dishes, but our second and third courses were even better. For the second course, we got pork belly with crab fried rice and the lengua. We really loved the pork belly and crab fried rice, the lengua was good but not great. For our third course, we had the lamb chorizo and charred octopus. We definitely ended the meal on a high point. The octopus was grilled to perfection and tasted amazing with the tomato sauce and potatoes. The lamb chorizo was also very tasty and our favorite dish of the night. The first time I ate here I thought it was pretty good and really wanted my mom to come eat here since she doesn't live here. We walked over and saw that there were seats at the bar and lots of open tables. My mom wasn't very dressed up and was wearing a backwards baseball hat. The host in the front said that they didn't have any seating left , and my mom even said we can sit at the bar we just want to try ! Not only were the food and drinks delicious (the patatas bravas and Scar of the Sea were my faves), but service was FANTASTIC. It was a busy Saturday, and they were out of the chai cocktail that I at first tried to order. Our server recommended the SoCal Spritz as an alternative, and I eagerly took her advice. (Since I'd arrived to dinner a few minutes before my friends, I ordered a drink at the bar, then transitioned to a table when my friends arrived. So when our drinks arrived, I still had half a Scar of the Sea left.) Not only did our server notice that it was taking me a bit longer to drink the drink she recommended, but she VERY gently and quietly asked me if I'd like a different drink. I reassured her that her recommendation was delicious - that it was just my first drink that had delayed consumption of my second drink.
