If you don't like fighting a crowd, I recommend showing up to the waterfront bars in Marseille on a Wednesday night in October! :) Fall is an "off-season" in Marseille, so the entire patio of tables (probably 150 seats) was basically empty, excepting our group. Staff is friendly and generally pretty quick (again, perhaps due to non-existent crowds). There's a full bar drink selection, including my most recent great discovery: peach syrup mixed with light beer (don't knock it until you have tried it). Huge plus in that they take credit cards (not a given in Marseille), but pretty big minus in that they generally won't keep a tab. Free olives and sour cream and onion chips located near the door! They're self-serve - grab a bowl (or several) and bring them to your table.

It's in Cours Julien so lots of dining, shopping, music. Buy Biere de la Plaine, don't get tricked into buying the other brand of supposedly local beer (called La Cagole) which is made to look like it is made in Marseille but is not.

Here you will not find the mega brewery BS, or the megabrewery disguised as a craft brewery, no 16, Kronenbourg, Heine@#$en (won't pronounce it) or any crap like that. Really good brews, cools ambiance, polite bartenders, great terrace, no more expensive than anywhere else, often live music, big mixed plates of cheese/vegetables/cold cuts.
