This is a great flea market in a beautiful location next to the seaside. The new market hall here is wonderful for foods ranging from ready-made to fresh produce, meats and fish, and sweets and coffee. The flea market itself is huge by city standards and heavy on womens' clothing, handbags, and knick-knacks. I have never seen many large items like furniture here but household goods abound. Comic books, records, jewelry, antique dishware...you name it, it's probably here. This is my favorite flea market: open air (fresh, seaside open air), great location, easy to get to by transit or foot, and rooted by a great place for food and drink. This is an activity that is easy to make a whole afternoon out of. Today's finds included baby clothes for .20 a piece, games for my classroom at around €2 apiece, and very expensive barely-used infant gear for about 1/20 of the retail price. There are a lot of great handbag deals on genuine and knock-off designer pieces if you're into that sort of thing. And I'm not talking about Chinatown type of stuff. I'm talking about the real deal.

I've been both buying and selling there since it opened and my experience over the years has been…read morevery positive.. Akseli is an upscale flea market - people bring their wares in and sell them used for 1-2 week periods. They are all given 2 bookshelves (one with shelves, one with clothes hangers). The shelves and store are neat, orderly, clean, and very upscale. The items offered also tend to be better than what you find at the local low rent kirpputori. For buyers, you'll find great items at good prices. Come Saturday or Monday for best selection. They accept credit cards and there is a small changing room to try on clothes. For sellers, it's a good place to make money off used items. An average week sales for me (mostly childrens toys and clothes) would be around 800e. Be prepared for shrinkage, though, since they don't seem to be doing much about rampant shoplifting. Several times I saw people walk out with item unpaid - or trip the security alarm and the sales clerk just holds her hand out while the person takes out the stolen item from her purse and hands it to the clerk then leaves. That was depressing to see as a seller. Their seller rates are ok - though they will be charging a percentage of sales in November in addition to the weekly rate. For the extra money you'd make over the local swap meet, I think the extra cost is justified. 4 stars for cleanliness, decent customer service, and an upscale way to purchase used items. 1 star less for serious issues for sellers with items disappearing due to shoplifting.

You go through a tiny storefront that smells like Grannie's attic and amble back through a narrow room full of granny's old furniture before creaking down a staircase into an underground lair full of other peoples' old junk. However, there can be finds to be found and I dig the weird vibe. Not big on kid's things (kind of thankful for that), but a lot of vintage-y stuff for the creative at heart. I am not even a little creative, so I probably won't be frequenting the joint. Mom tip: Not stroller friendly, kid friendly, or even kid interesting. If you do want to pop in (and I strongly suggest you do - it's a weird little place), I'd hit it solo or with a kid attached to your person. I will add that the space is so big and there is so much stuff that even though I didn't find anything either time I went, I spent about an hour there. Happy Hunting!

Most of the clothes looked almost new. The hours of operation are a bit confusing. I went there on Sunday from 11 to 13 and it was open. When I went on Saturday it was closed.

There's a lot of junk (again...I really hate when people try to sell their old junky H&M crap and promotional t-shirts and such when they really ought to just be donated to people who can use them) but also a lot of great stuff to be found. Shoes, dishware, jeans (my favorite!), handbags, etc...there really is something for everyone. The underground, mouse-maze aesthetic of the space makes shopping here even more fun. I think their booth rental prices start at around 50e/week. On my almost-daily walks through Kaivopuisto, I almost-daily stop in to see what's new. Best Kirppis in Helsinki so far for my taste and wallet.
