It is oblong in shape and covers an area of about 2 km² in a central location of the city. Established in 1676, it has been a public garden since 1814. A central feature of the park is the Sommerpalais.
Established outside the old walls of the city, the park was encompassed by the significant growth of the urban area in the second half of the 19th century. A miniature railway known as the Parkeisenbahn was developed by youth organisations of the former GDR in 1950.
The Volkswagen's Transparent Factory is the newest building built here and is located at the Straßburger Platz in the northwest corner of the park.
Take time to walk around and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere. There is a nice cafe and Biergarten in the centre of the park that serves pretty decent food. A must visit when in Dresden.
