The first telecommunications tower in the world constructed from reinforced concrete, the Fernsehturm Stuttgart was completed in 1956. There is a gift shop and queue area at the ground floor. From there, the lift whisks you to the lower observation deck at 150 meters (490 feet) which is enclosed. Then you can check out the upper observation deck which is open to the air. We lucked out with great visibility today able to see for miles and miles and miles. And we got a snack in the cafe while looking out at the horizon. The TV tower is the first tower built in 1956 and was the start of an era of television towers being built around the world. An example for many large metropolitan cities' towers. The tower has an elevator that cruises at 18km/hr or at 5m/s will get you to the first viewing platform in about 36 seconds. It sports a busy cafe and bar upstairs with panoramic views. It took awhile for service after being seated but the views are phenomenal and you can see for miles and miles. So it wasn't too bad! . The beer was cold and the snacks were good. I'd recommend coming up here for a view or beer/coffee or both. Totally worth the quick trip from Stuttgart city center. Take U7 (quicker) or U15 for a more scenic route, which I recommend. read more

-can't figure out how to leave a tip about the Fernsehturm's current status. Yes, the tower itself is closed to the public until further notice. The sign on the door of the info. center that is still open to the public (M-F 9.00 to 13.00 and on Saturdays) reads that there is an ongoing effort to re-open the tower. No specifics were given. Nice view- even when it was cloudy. You can enjoy a nice dinner in the downstairs restaurant- Or a coffee and cake in the upstairs cafe (no reservations accepted for the cafe). I recommend going up the 36 second TV tower ride, then enjoy the view and have a snack. The downstairs restaurant struggled getting a waiter to us, or getting us seated. read more

Stuttgarts TV tower was the first tv tower, cast in concrete. Construction started in 1954 under the supervision of its architect Fritz Leonard. After one and a half years, the public could take the elevators up to the platform at aroud 150m to have a splendid view over Stuttgart, its airport and with very good weather basically all over Baden-Württeberg (ok, a little bit exagerated). This comes from the fact that the base of the tower is already at 420m over sea level. At the bottom of the tower a restaurant invites for dinner and at its top, there is a cafe. There is also a restaurant in the gondola, but this is currently closed. The entrance fee is relatively cheap (4EUR for adults, 2EUR for kids if I recall correctly). There is enough parking space next to the tower, but is also very vell reachable by public transport (U7, 15/U15). A nice trip could be to take the U14 from main station towards Heslach, exit Marienplatz and take the "Zacke" to "Nägelestraße, then take a short walk through the forrest to the TV tower. Then after having visited it, take U7 to Killesberg and give a visit to the Weissenhof Siedlung. Take Bus 43 (or 4x) back to the city center. read more

Great tower with enormous sight on top. It is cold and windy out there, so do not forget some warm jacket. Parking is easy and nearby you can also go climbing or ice skating, as it is Stuttgart-Degerloch Sportpark with a lot of sport clubs and their gyms. read more
