I have been to this hotel three times and I like it. It's close to town center by tram which stops…read moreright down the street, a very short walk. Two tram stops to town at the Domplatz where the fabulous Christmas market is. It takes 5 minuets. Erfurt town is loaded with shops and restaurants. Three more stops and you're at the main train station. There you can get trains into all the surrounding areas, and now with the high speed trains leaving out of Erfurt you can get to Berlin or Nuremberg in about an hour. Very easy. If you have a car there is parking at the hotel which we used on one trip. I guess it's all relative, because €10 a day is nothing compared to the cost of parking in America. So we thought it was a bargain.
What I like most about the hotel is that I save money which I'd rather spend shopping and sightseeing. In fact, the price of our room here was low enough that we spent a night in Berlin and a night in Nuremberg without checking out of the Hotel Alt Erfurt, keeping it as our "home base".
I don't need a 24 hour front desk or concierge service. I don't need swimming pools and ice buckets. What I do like is for my room to be clean, which it is at this hotel. With an updated bathroom and wood laminate floors which are cleaner than carpets. My rooms had full sized hair dryers, televisions, wifi, and kitchenette with refrigerator, sink and stove. The beds are basic and firm. I'm not that particular when it comes to that but I understand some might be. But the beds are clean and I didn't have any problems with them.
I found the staff to be friendly and very helpful. Although there is a language barrier, I was able to over come it as they really try. They understand German some, and English less. The kitchen lady is a little grumpy but I didn't take it personally. She was busy preparing and laying out a nice buffet breakfast every morning. Weekends 8-11am and weekdays 7-10am. I only wish the weekdays also went until 11am. I didn't think €9.50 was too expensive for an all you can eat breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausage, rolls, meats and cheeses, bread, muffins, cereals and lots of fruits everyday. Different items were also prepared each day to change it up. The dinning area had many tables and I never felt crowded.
If you want to be pampered with luxurious soaps and creams in your bathroom, fancy furniture or need a concierge staff to help you plan your days this is not your place. But if you just want a place thats affordable, clean and conveniently located this is a good choice. I am giving this hotel 4 stars because, for the price, it was worth it.
