This is a weekly (Wednesday) swing dance party in Prague 6…read more
The logistics: the party starts at 8PM outside the cafe Prostoru in the NTK building (note that this location is on the Technická street, the Yelp map shows the wrong side of the building ). At 10PM the party moves inside the cafe. The location is a bit away from the tourist places, about a 10-15-minute tram ride. Attendance is free. Updates (in Czech) can be found at https://www.facebook.com/swingbusters/ .
The music: DJ music tilted towards mid-high tempo (think Charleston).
The floor: the dance starts on the concrete pavement outside the cafe. The rough surface makes pivots hard; taking care of yours and your partner's knees is essential. Do not put on your good dance shoes yet. The floor inside the cafe after 10PM is smooth plastic that is easier on your shoes and your knees.
The crowd: on the day I visited (in August) about 60 people, mostly at the intermediate and advanced level, but with a heavy portion of beginners. There are also a lot of onlookers, who have zero swing dance skills, but can be invited to dance. The dancers are mostly young, although compared to other places in Prague there were more of the mature folks like me. As it is typical for Prague, there are more follows than leads.
Overall: high fun factor (a chance to dance to less politically correct tunes like the King Size Papa!), a must-visit for a swing dancer who happens to come to Prague.
