Baan Thai is located on the outskirts of the Burton town centre. It is a very popular restaurant…read moreand also does takeaways, so its probably best to book. No parking for the restaurant itself, but there is handy public car park across the road. The restaurant has ornate wood carvings on the walls flanked by immitation pink bricks, and artificial orchids and ferns. I'm not a huge fan of artificial flowers but the whole look to the restaurant really works, making for a great atmosphere. Presented with plush velvet covered menus, with an amazing range and variety of dishes, we would have normally ordered a set meal. Not tonight though, we picked five mains and three different rices. The starters also looked very impressive, but we decided to plump for just the mains, as Baan Thai is a fairly pricey restaurant. The menu also has a handy chilli rating from none to three, if you choose three, good luck! Our impressively presented dishes arrived, each adorned with a generous side salad. The chicken, fish, duck, aubergine and vegetable dishes we had ordered surprisingly complemented each other very well. The rice was sticky and absorbed the flavour of the food well. Whilst not huge portions, all five of us felt we had eaten well. A good range of desserts and a pot of Jasmine tea finished off a great evening. Be aware though Baan Thai is not a cheap restaurant, particularly if you go for the set meals.

It could be that they precook the meat and then add to the entree. I rate this place on the high side because the food tastes good. I wasn't expecting decent Thai food in Burton. I might rate this place 3 stars if it were in a big city. In a remote place like Burton, I have lower expectations and greater appreciation when ethic restaurants do a decent job.

The Nipa Thai restaurant is part of the Barton Marina Complex and is quite a large spacious…read morerestaurant with high ceilings and magnificent decoration throughout; it even has a small waterfall running through the centre, which makes for a magnificent backdrop to an evening's dining. The restaurant could probably seat at least 70 people comfortably. They have a fixed price buffet lunch menu, and a sizeable menu in the evening, including set meals and a myriad of other dishes. There were 15 of us with varying tastes, so everybody chose independently, either with individual dishes or to go with the set meals - A,B,C or D or varying price, the cheapest being around £20 a head. They roughly went up a £5 per person as you ascended the alphabet, the latter two being for a minimum of 4 people. I however, shared Set Meal V with a colleague, the vegetarian set menu (£20.50 per person); I am no vegetarian by any means, but its always a good test of a restaurants credentials to see if their vegetarian food matches up to the rest of the menu. Lets just say I was most impressed! After perusing the menu and the waiter taking copious notes of our order, the starters arrived very promptly and thanks to some most impressive note making, everybody not only got the correct dish, they was also given directly to them, very impressive. Our mixed starter was a real triumph, won-tons, battered vegetables, vegetarian fritters was some of the highlights, all accompanied with a rather spicy fresh salad, resplendent with chilli seeds. A great start; other starters included spicy broths, chicken satay and a plentiful basket of won-tons in a potato bird's nest. All dishes on the menu had a guide to spiciness, one, two or three chillis, whilst most dishes had none. Some of our party were brave enough to try the three chillis, quite warm apparently! Our main courses, of which there were four as part of our very impressive set meal, were mixed vegetables in an oyster sauce (a good accompaniment to the other dishes), mushroom, cashews and vegetables in black bean type sauce, tofu in a the most wonderful sweet and sour sauce and spicy Thai green curry packed with crunchy vegetables. All fantastic dishes, but the tofu was a real highlight, the accompany sauce was wonderfully flavoursome. All washed down with a couple of bottles of Singha. What a great restaurant: attentive service, a relaxed atmosphere, good company and some of the best Thai food I've had for a long time.

By far the best Thai food I have eaten in the UK (and it also compares very favourably to the food…read moreI had in Thailand!). This restaurant is an absolute gem. The menu is huge and everything I have ever tried has been great. Favourites include fish cakes, sweetcorn cakes and chicken satay for starters (they also do a Thai platter for two or more to share, which would be a great introduction for people unfamilar to Thai cuisine). For the main course the green curry is to die for! Prices are quite reasonable (about £6/£7 for a main course). Set menus are also available. Staff are really friendly. The decor is fairly traditional and not really my cup of tea, although the chairs are very comfortable! If you fancy somewhere more modern the same people also run a Thai restaurant in Quorn in Leicestershire which is much more funky, modern and upmarket - although that's also reflected in the prices. I cannot rate this place highly enough - it's worth going for the free prawn and spicy rice crackers alone!

That's quite rare as some of the other top places in Ashby can be quite hit or miss depending on how busy they are, the day of the week, season, lunar cycle, whatever. The menu is quite extensive and the wine list is decent. Try the Gai Yang, chargrilled chicken with sweet chilli sauce succulent, tender, full of flavour Yum!!!!

Unlike some buffet places I have been to this one you actually order what you want and they cook it bring it to out for you. The service was not the quickest but it was ok. Basically you order your starters they bring it out, you eat it, you want more you order more starters. Once you have had enough of starters you move onto a middle course which once again is cooked to order. I did wonder how they would cope if it was busy as there were only a hand full of people in the restaurant and a the service was not the quickest but the food was always hot when it arrived, which is always a bonus! We did dwell on the middle course for a bit, but as with food you always find you have to move on to the next course. We again ordered a variety of mains, and the food was tasteful and bearing in mind you could order more it was plentiful. The only exception was the fact that they advertise a pad thai. Its not pad thai it is a chow mien at best. To say I was disappointed was an understatement, I was looking forward to the Pad Thai and then I saw it and all was lost. They may well have got 4 stars as I liked the way they had the restaurant set up the service was ok and the food was good, but if you are going to advertise a dish please please please actually serve the dish...

I would definitely go again.

Its very conveniently located with Bold Lane Parksafe Car Park across the road. It is quite a small place but everything fits in well. Its pleasant decor and the staff are traditionally dressed, which adds to the Thai theme. Whilst we were studying the menu, there was a small basket of thai crackers placed on the table, which is a nice touch. We had 3 courses. 2 platters for 2, one meat and the other vegetarian as a starter. Both were delicious, my favourite part being the satay sauce (because I LOVE it!!). We all completely loved our main courses. I had Massaman Gai, which is a curry I have had before in another restaurant, and it was perfect. I would have loved to have been given the sauce in a flask to take away with me!! The quantity was great (my mum had the red thai curry and couldn't finish it so asked for a doggy bag!). We just had enough room for pudding. They were nice but simple. Either frozen desserts or I had banana fritters. It was the starters and main course that made it for me. And I can highly recommend finishing with the Jasmine Tea. Delicious. The service from the staff was just right, no hassling and very polite. For four of us, 3 courses and a few drinks each, it came to less than £100 which I think is very reasonable. I will definitely be returning to this place.
