Running on a farm. I think that's what I did. To be honest though, parts of the 2023 course was thru simple single track trails that was outside the farm property.
Welcome to Farm Life. At least we got to see a glimpse of it in action. My friend who runs 100 milers like cake suggested that I consider this one in rural Georgia usually in mid or late February. The Farm Daze 24 hr / 12 hr / 6 hr ultra marathon running event is a small scale party that is sure to please the beginner and advanced trail runners alike. My only regret that I did not have a headlamp during the night hours, but fortunately, for me, I am good at making friends, and I got to get a headlamp. I eventually got the nerves to walk/run with a new friend with they had them, and it was nice and got to experience the trail after dark. The only thing about this race is it is ideal to camp on the actual farm itself. The nearest hotel block is in Statesboro, GA or in Savannah, GA. The only saving grace is that the actual course is about just beyond 1.5 miles per loop, so he was fairly quick to get through the trail sections of the course for the most part, though I enjoyed it for the benefit of my own sanity and question the motors why I still do these damn things. Still it was a nice place to visit with me though I was in rural Georgia in the middle of February 2023. It was enjoyable and it felt like family here and I made a lot of new friends. I even got a few "Hey, you're from Hawaii?" I would reply "yeah", like it's no big thing lol.
The overall experience here at Farm Daze 24 / 12 / 6 hr ultra running event was fun and definitely a unique experience. While it was a good fun time, it was good and the trails kept it interesting, especially when there are muddy parts along the trail and I wanted to not slip and fall. My experience started on Friday around noon, arriving at the Farm near Brooklet, GA. We started to pitch tents and that was what we were going to sleep in for the weekend. Packet pick up was held later that day and it was smooth and friendly. Took about 3 minutes to find me on the roster and got my race number. The next morning after a restless sleep in a tent that dropped to mid 30 degrees Fahrenheit, we started the 24 / 12 and 6 hour race at 9am. The first laps were just to enjoy the loop and to learn the course. Once that was out of the way, we all climbed in mileage until late in the day. Many people were equipped with head lamps to go during the night. I purchased one but forgot to charge it when I needed to. So I managed to try to sleep and get in some laps before the end of the event in the morning. The camaraderie between fellow runners was great and it was inspirational for sure to keep going, especially during the overnight hours when the crazy get crazier. Goals are meant to be met and broken. These are goal driven people and I hope to be like them someday. For the most part though, Farm Daze 24 hr ultra run was a fun experience and could recommend it to everyone. While the trails really did slow me down and walked plenty of it, it was cool that there is an event like this in Georgia for crazy ultra runners, myself included. If you love running long distances or need Georgia for your 50 states half marathon or marathon+ goal, consider Farm Daze 24 hr run in Brooklet, GA.
Farm Daze 24 hr ultra run is run on the Hunter Cattle Company farm in Brooklet, Georgia. Majority of registration is held online, so they accept major credit cards until it closes prior to race day. As mentioned before, the race accepts anyone regardless of running ability, but you gotta know what you're signing up for. The race really caters to the running community, which offers up foods and drinks to sustain many an ultra runner during the day and night. This year, I saw the course record being broken and it was awesome! The guy looked fresh the entire way and that was amazing! As mentioned before, best thing to do is to camp here, as a hotel is nowhere close by to the site. While it can get cold in GA during mid February, be prepared for anything. They have a parking lot for participants within the farm property. Yes, you can save money from not having to sleep in a hotel room like how I did by camping. Roughing it was interesting especially when temps dropped into the mid 30's at night while I was there in a tent. All in all, can't complain too much. The friendships and the running camaraderie was self evident and intoxicating. While I would love to return here sometime, just need to finish up running the rest of the country. 2023 Farm Daze 24 hr ultra is my 29th marathon / ultra state - second round and my 117th lifetime marathon / ultra distance. This race is truly transformative and soul inspiring at the same time.
5.0 stars for the overall experience.
