Many people will tell you they've been coming to L.L. Bean since they were born. It's Maine's most…read morefamous store and for good reason. Not only is a flagship store iconic, but there is basically an entire L.L. Bean village. The home store, the hunting store, the café, the outlet... It truly keeps Freeport running. I was excited to visit after the years long renovation. The store still feels very much the same with some newer updates, like new features for kids, additions to the trout pond. They were also doing a vintage L.L. Bean pop-up in the front of the store where you could buy vintage L.L. Bean goods. You will not find friendlier sales associates anywhere. I also love that so many people who work here are of older age. It feels so wholesome. LL Bean used offer free returns for life, but they've updated that to one year. I can get behind that, they gotta make money somehow. When you're in Maine, it's worth a trip. Not to mention it's open 24 hours a day so you can literally go in at any time. From what I know, it's been that way forever. I heard stories about my grandfather bringing my mom when she was a little girl to feed the trout in the middle of the night. He told me that the tag inside the shoes which is supposed to be representative of a two year warranty is actually no longer valid and that the only thing I could do is call Nike customer service and send the sneakers in for evaluation but I was wasting my time. Again, he continued to tell me that it was my wear pattern of the shoe that broke it down. He said he was a sneaker expert and refused to do anything at all. Went to Merrimack and they swapped the shoes out within 10 mins and when the manager heard the issue she knew who I had been dealing with and rolled her eyes. Instead of feeling welcomed, we were made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment we walked in. One employee spent much of our visit sneering and making faces at us. She eventually approached us and told my child she could not sit on an empty bottom shelf. I immediately corrected my child and respected the request, even though I honestly did not understand what harm she was causing by sitting there. My child had a significant reaction because that space had become a safe place for her. Anyone who has experience with autism knows that removing a child from a perceived safe space can sometimes result in a big reaction. Rather than showing even a little patience or understanding, this employee continued to make faces at us from across the store while we tried to help our child regulate, so we could leave. I understand employees have rules to enforce. What I do not understand is the complete lack of compassion. My child is disabled. She was not being malicious, disruptive, or intentionally disrespectful. She was a toddler struggling with a situation she did not understand. Watching an employee visibly judge us while we were trying to help our child was incredibly upsetting. We walked into the store looking for shoes and walked out feeling like our family wasn't welcome there. Families with children who have disabilities deserve better than this. Management should seriously consider addressing how employees are expected to treat customers with disabilities and families who may need a little extra patience and understanding.
