    Britannia Hotel - Palmehaven

The Britannia Hotel is a luxury hotel specializing in providing guests with an experience. Based on…read moreour stay, the financial investment is worth it! Lodging as adults or as a family, guests will not be disappointed. The staff bring the Britannia Hotel to life! We arrived late (after 2100) and our child was asleep. The front desk staff checked us in quickly and provided information regarding all of the amenities available. Before we even settled in our room, Ms. Mahasen from evening housekeeping was at our door with a cot and other items so our 3 year old didn't need to share a bed with us. Ms. Mahasen made sure to provide us additional linen, toiletries, and even a child sized bathrobe! When our child woke up, he was so excited to be "cozy" in a robe just like his parents. Housekeeping checks rooms twice each day making certain guests always feel refreshed before bed. Typical "included breakfasts" in the United States include cereal, coffee, and boxed scrambled eggs. Britannia Hotel and the Palmehaven staff give guests a true dining experience for the breakfast buffet! Eggs benedict, made to order omelettes, sliced fresh fruit, pastries, and even honey from the Britannia Hotel's beehives! (If you wish to see the beehives, they can be viewed from the 10th floor windows) With such an elegant breakfast experience, the staff ensure families feel welcomed and supported too. Ms. Anna hosted us most mornings and she became our child's favorite person during our stay. Each morning, Ms. Anna would ask him about his previous day's adventures, would give him a "choice" of where to sit, and actively listening as he shared his fascination with Pokemon. Ms. Anna and the Palmehaven staff keep coloring pages, activity books, and colored pencils to entertain children thus allowing parents to enjoy and finish their meal. There were mornings our child woke us up to go show Ms. Anna a different toy he did not share with her during a previous visit. The wait staff at the Palmehaven are kind, polite, and professional! If our child said "hello", waved, or initiated interaction, the staff always engaged and made our child feel seen and important. After a few mornings, our child was known by name with a few of the staff members and it made him feel like royalty! We cannot leave out the valet and front desk staff! The valets also came to know our child's name and asked him where he was adventuring to for the day, asked how the trip was, and were very understanding when he showcased less than ideal three year old behavior. The front desk was always smiling, professional, and willing to answer any questions. If they did not know an answer, the Britannia Hotel team went out of their way to find the answer for us. Amenities at the Britannia Hotel provide a great experience for those traveling adult only and those traveling with families. The indoor pool offers Child Friendly - Family hours; this provides guests with the opportunity to enjoy a child free pool environment while also providing pool time for families. They sell swimsuits which is very convenient (especially when traveling in winter when most stores no longer have swimsuits available in stores). The gym is a fitness enthusiast's dream! With a clean and spacious setup, the fitness center includes the typical cardio equipment as well as weightlifting equipment and a deadlift platform. Trondheim is a beautiful walkable city and the Britannia Hotel is set in the middle. The cathedral and museums are a short walk away. A convenient store, cafe, bookstore, and pharmacy are all located less than a 3 minute walk from the hotel. If traveling with children, the science center is also a short walk from the hotel; an excellent option for days with undesirable weather. The Britannia Hotel is also attached to several dining options including the Palmehaven, Brassiere, Jonathan's Grill, and a Bar. All of these dining options can be accessed without stepping outside. It was lovely to dress for date night without worrying about warm practical attire and shoes to accommodate the weather. This was our first trip to Norway and the Britannia Hotel provided clean, luxurious lodging with professional and kind customer service. With breakfast, the pool, location, and attached dining, the Britannia Hotel helped reduce the amount of guess work and finite planning needed to enjoy our vacation when weather or illness required a change of plans. We loved vacation in Trondheim and we loved our stay with the Britannia Hotel!

Our room was a good size and it was very clean, plus there was even shampoo (don't laugh; that's not typically provided at Norwegian hotels, nor are seemingly any other amenities). WiFi is free in the rooms and throughout the hotel via a code given out at the reception desk. The check-in clerk was very friendly - and she told us that even though we'd miss the breakfast buffet, various breakfast snack foods were provided as of 4:00 a.m. each morning (we had to leave shortly before 5:00 a.m.). However; the reality is that there were just a few pieces of fruit plus coffee. The reason why I'm only giving three stars is due to what occurred upon check-out. The clerk - who was very pleasant initially - told us something was wrong with our credit card and the payment wasn't going through. We'd paid for the room immediately upon check-in (the usual, whereby the card is preauthorized for payment) and everything was fine. The check-out clerk insisted the problem was from our end (wrong) and she adamantly refused to give us a receipt. No other employees were there and the person in line behind us was really angry about the delay, plus we had to catch our flight. My husband quickly went online to our account and it showed that the payment had *already* been made to Radisson (earlier that morning). He showed the clerk, but she obstinately refused to believe it (?!) and still refused to give us a receipt. She tried forcing us to pay in cash - but not only could we not spare the cash (everything in Norway is obscenely expensive against the dollar), but we were *not* about to pay twice for the room. I insisted she take my e-mail address and that she forward the receipt via e-mail attachment, which she reluctantly agreed to do "IF in fact the situation could be rectified". Meanwhile, we were very concerned about being able to use our credit card subsequently - so when we arrived at the airport, we had to contact our credit card company (a very expensive proposition from abroad). They confirmed that the hotel had been paid earlier. Later in the day we received the requested copy of our bill from the hotel clerk, with no apology whatsoever.

The hotel staff allowed us to check in our two luggage carts in a secure room, which saved us a ton of time for our 6am flight. We ate dinner at the restaurant and it was delicious and the waitress was super kind to our 3 tired children. The hotel didn't have any double rooms left but made our room cozy with a cot and crib for our baby. In the morning we were up too early for their full free breakfast, but it was awesome to grab complimentary fruit and waters to go. Free shampoo and lotions in the room. The tub was missing its stopper and we forgot to report it to the hotel.

So much lost potential here. I went to Rockheim expecting to learn a lot about Norwegian popular…read moremusic. Instead, what I got was mostly a wanky multimedia experience with old touchscreens and laser pointers that basically only played music videos, songs, and showed pictures -- things I could easily pull up on Youtube. The only good part was the wall of instruments and other recording devices where you could pull up info about the object, learn about the history, what artist used it, listen to songs it was in, etc. But that was only about 10% of the museum. The rest was multimedia hell (and I'm a computer nerd) that didn't inform at all about Norwegian music history. For example, the Hip Hop room had a computer game you could play to remix some songs (what's the point?) and a laser pointer that you could use to scribble graffiti on the wall. That's it. No info at all about the history of Norwegian hip-hop, sub-genres, artists, etc. Just games. This kind of superfluous interactive fluff was the majority of the museum. Very disappointing. Although I'm sure that the Canadian company that designed this crap is laughing all the way to the bank, given that Norway spent millions on this junk.

Fun for the whole family on a rainy day!…read more Rockheim is an interactive museum about Norwegian music history. I am no music expert but I still had a wonderful time. There is information both in English and Norwegian, and kids love it because it is interactive with instruments, laser guns and touch screens! Adults love it because of the music, and the reminiscing! Absolutely worth stopping by if you have the time.
