The Steeple is the main landmark in Falkirk, seen at its best from the High Street itself, and was designed by the architect David Hamilton. It stands 140ft high and was erected in 1814, actually replacing two previous steeples. The town has had a steeple for 400 years.
The current steeple was struck by lightning in 1927 and the top 30 feet collapsed, scattering rubble over a large area. Some of it fell through a nearby house burying people until they were rescued they survived despite broken bones! Unfortunately a horse standing underneath the steeple wasn't so lucky and was killed outright. The steeple was later rebuilt.
Inside there are four levels. The ground floor is the Town Hall box office. Above are two prison cells although the steeple hasn't been used as a prison for a long time.
This elegant classically-styled Steeple is listed as an ancient monument and as such is well looked after. The sandstone has been cleaned in recent years, restoring it to its original colour.
Must be seen if you are visiting the area actually it's hard to miss if you're in the town centre! read more
