I booked this experience about 2-3 weeks ago, and honestly, I went into it with a lot more anxiety than excitement. Coming from Southern California, I was already stressing about all the usual travel stuff -- flights, hotels, rental cars, and everything else that comes with traveling somewhere new. On top of that, I was genuinely nervous about getting into the ocean.
But after actually doing this experience, I can confidently say I was extremely impressed.
From the moment we arrived, the hospitality from the entire crew was one of the things that stood out the most. Everyone was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely seemed like they wanted you to have a great time. It didn't feel like one of those experiences where you're just another person who paid for a ticket. The crew actually interacted with us, answered questions, joked around, and made us feel comfortable.
I had also been eating pretty expensive, boring hotel food all week, so getting on the boat and being able to experience something different -- including local culture and food -- was honestly refreshing. And I have to mention the bread because it was legitimately addictive.
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience.
Snorkeling
Now for the snorkeling -- I was scared shitless to get into the ocean, not going to lie.
Coming from California, I'm used to being around the ocean, but warm Caribbean water is a completely different experience. I had that initial hesitation about jumping in, especially somewhere unfamiliar.
As soon as I got in, though, I was immediately given instructions and had a guide helping us. The crew also did a great job making sure everyone was safely in the water and accounted for before the tour continued. That gave me a lot more confidence because you could tell they weren't just rushing people through the experience.
And yes -- this is a legitimate snorkeling experience.
We started over some really cool coral and marine ecosystems and got to see beautiful fish and things that you really only get to experience in Puerto Rico. The water was incredibly clear, warm, and peaceful. No freezing California ocean shock -- just salty water and a ton of marine life.
Our guide would periodically stop and explain what we were seeing, including things like fire coral. I really appreciated that because it made the snorkeling feel like more than just swimming around looking at fish. He also explained the importance of respecting the ocean, not touching things we shouldn't, and leaving the ecosystem alone. That was something I genuinely appreciated.
After the guided portion, we also had time to snorkel on our own and explore.
Some people in our group ended up seeing a small, harmless baby shark, while others saw stingrays -- including me! Seeing a stingray casually swimming around underneath me was one of those moments where I thought, Okay, this is actually pretty damn cool.
And despite how nervous I was beforehand, I ended up feeling completely comfortable in the water.
The Rest of the Experience
After snorkeling, we stopped for some food and fun near a beautiful beach where people could swim and walk around. There were unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, which was definitely a nice touch.
One of my favorite parts of the entire experience was watching everyone go from complete strangers to basically hanging out together by the end. There was a really social and relaxed atmosphere, and the crew played a huge part in that.
The crew was honestly amazing.
They weren't just there to serve drinks and get everyone back on the boat. We were able to talk with them about Puerto Rico, ask about things to do, and get recommendations from locals. It felt like they were actually trying to show us a good time and introduce us to their home rather than treating us like another credit card transaction.
That made the experience feel much more personal.
Final Thoughts
My girlfriend and I had an amazing time, and I genuinely want to thank the entire crew for making the experience what it was.
I came into this trip worried about a lot of things, and I was especially nervous about getting into the ocean. By the end of the day, I was snorkeling, seeing stingrays, eating good food, drinking, talking with strangers who became friends, and just enjoying being in Puerto Rico.
I attended the Calypso experience to Icacos Island on October 7, 2026, at 1:30 PM, and based on my experience, I would absolutely recommend it.
If you're nervous about snorkeling or you're coming from somewhere like California and aren't used to warm Caribbean water, don't let that stop you. The crew was helpful, the experience felt safe and organized, and they did a great job making everyone feel included.
