I wanted to post about Karsten and Cameron's work at the new Valhalla Pure Outfitters (VPO) in…read moredowntown Victoria. Karsten at VPO mounted skis for me last week at the end of May (!). His work is excellent. It's hard to get good ski service in Victoria, and Karsten went out of his way to get a rig. I've also gotten great help from Cameron at the same store. Besides the staff, the Victoria's VPO has an excellent, concentrated selection of climbing gear. It's the store you would get if hard climbers (that were moderate gear nerds) were told to fill out a garage. Compared to a big Vancouver and Seattle store, the floor space is small. But the careful attention on selection shows, and gives the store a compact, useful character.

Called in morning of on Sunday and was glad there was still room for bookings. Turned out we were 2 of only 3 on the tour that evening, and Austin happened to be our guide. Because of unpredictable winds we went up the harbour instead of out to open waters, which was a little disappointing to me but ended up being fantastic, with lots of historic/fun facts about Victoria and sightings of a bunch of harbour seals. The 2-hour tour was just right for getting to the Selkirk Trestle and back, and 7-9pm was still the perfect amount of light in mid-August. 100% recommend and looking for a time to come back ourselves!

We paddled for 6 days and camped for 5 nights. The scenery and whale watching aspects of the trip were excellent. The camps were comfortable and well supported by occasional re-supply from the base back in Port NcNiell. The camp on Sophia Island was particularly well appointed with already set tents, cots and a nice kitchen and sitting area. The food prepared by our guide was excellent and hearty. I would certainly recommend this group for paddlers of all levels of experience.

We learned a lot from him and enjoyed spending some time getting to know him. Our guide, Korry, was also excellent. He was also friendly and welcoming and made sure we were well fed and had a good time. There is never a guarantee of finding specific wildlife when you are out in the wild, but Larry and Korry knew the animals behaviors and made sure to stay up to date on recent patterns and updates from all the other local teams in order to give us the best chance to see orcas, humpbacks, eagles, seals, and lots of other wildlife while out kayaking. Even if we didn't see any whales the entire time, it still would have been a great trip. However, we did see lots of orca and humpbacks during our time. They even came right by our island one evening, where we could see them from our dinner table and hear them while sleeping in our tents. I highly recommend going with Larry and Discovery Expeditions. We hope to make another trip in the future.
