Graffiti artists from all around the world have come here and painted magnificent pieces, showing off their talents and skills which have made them known world wide. Before meeting my boyfriend never was I into this art, but it really is quite unique. These big bold pieces are done with spray cans and spraying techniques. I would never have known that those fine straight lines were all done freehand. It really is an art and far from the horrible eye sore tagging which gives graffiti a bad name. This local flavour is totally worth coming to view. It gives so much character to the area. I truly am a fan!

Monterey specialise in contemporary art by New Zealanders, which (in my uneducated opinion) ranges from pieces that would have wide appeal, to more abstract or unusual things. It;s mostly paintings but they also have other works, like sculpture and gorgeous wee ceramics. It's a really nice place to buy a special present, and they also have a small but very tasteful range of greeting cards.

I think this is because it gets the best of both worlds: it has links with the trad art scene, as well as looking beyond that to artists who are outside of this. It's been a really pivotal part of getting exposure for many of the artists who have exhibited here, and at the same time is an integral part of the Otara community and really responsive to that. I can't think of another place in Auckland that walks this tightrope so lightly. Fresh has just re-opened, and is totally amazing for those of us who knew it in its last incarnation: it now seems giant, and has workshop space and a cafe. Pretty flash.
