    Face Rock Wayside

With sooooo very many scenic viewpoints along the Southern Oregon coast, marked and otherwise, it's hard to keep track of which is which as you tour the area! So how to remember this one, well, besides the sorta-kinda face shaped rock? For me it was the not-so-faced shaped rocks around it. It IS just another pretty spot, but this stop might've had the coolest and most unique grouping of rock formations along the corridor.

This is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. We were so excited to arrive here as whenever we have visited in the past, it is always raining so we have never had the opportunity to walk on this beach until Today! We were staying right next door and we had our own walkway down to the beach. The rocks are huge and you feel pretty small when you are standing next to them. So beautiful though and they just make the beach look that much more appealing. We took so many pictures too. I wish it would have been sunny but I will settle for overcast. We took our time taking in all the beauty of the gorgeous Oregon coast including the flowers, small shells, rock tunnels, and all the unique birds. There are over 300 species of migratory birds that live here. We had to get up close to Face Rock itself and yes you can see the outline of the Princess Ewanua's face. She was Princess of the Nah-So-Mah tribe. Legend says that you can hear her voice in the wind. There are restrooms, picnic tables and if you don't want to walk down to the beach, there are viewing areas that you can just stand and take it all in. I highly recommend a stop here.

Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint or otherwise known as Face Rock Wayside offers a 180 degree panoramic vantage point of the sweeping Oregon coastline. Located in Bandon, OR - the "city by the sea", you can visit Face Rock while driving north or south on Highway 101. Cathedral Rock is the noticeable focal point. It appeared to be the largest of all the boulders resting upon the shore. And once you capture a few moments standing at this Face Rock observation lookout, it's only fitting to walk the pathway down to the beach. Then you have unlimited time at your disposal wandering along the sand, soaking up the fresh air and taking in that classic southern Oregon setting. When I first visited Face Rock, the coastline was muddled with dreary dense fog. By the time I left 2 hours later, the skies had cleared and showcased clearer perspectives. That's how fast the weather can change spending time on the coast. You can swim in the beach waters, but I noticed a lot of people were playfully climbing the rocks and taking family photos. Bandon Beach is unique offering chances to sort of create your own adventure. And especially for someone like myself who's from the east coast of Florida. I rarely see giant rocks like these. It was a refreshing change of pace from what I'm used to. Overall, Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint is a worthwhile roadside stop. Before returning to Highway 101 wherever you're next destination may be, two miles away is charming Old Town Bandon which is good for light window shopping and grabbing a bite to eat.

I don't know how we "legitimately" rate a scenic viewpoint. I can tell you, though, that this is one of my favorite beaches in the world. I've walked in many. The rocks, and flowers, cliffs, and occasional circles in the sand make this place truly magical. There is parking but it fills up early. The steps down to the water are well maintained and the toilets were provisioned.

My Aunt lives up here in Bandon, and this is about a mile from her house. We stopped here for a couple minutes to get some pictures of Face Rock. Once you see it and can make it out, it's so cool! You can walk down on the beach, or stay up here at the viewpoint to get some nice pictures. The beaches are so different up here compared to down in Southern CA. Lots of rocks and driftwood and colder waters. Absolutely beautiful!

We stopped here after a late start and big breakfast. I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this beach. There is a bigger concentration of notable rocks and geographic forms here than anywhere else we visited on our trip up the coast. You can enter this beach from two separate access points on Beach Loop Road and we parked at one then walked to the other. Afterwards, we walked along the road which offered sweeping views on the beach we just explored below. This town is so cool with the small houses that dot the coastline. This beach would be a great place to visit with kids or your dog. It was very windy and covered in debris (driftwood) when we visited in early September but was much less crowded than other places we visited on this trip. If you are in Bandon, definitely stop here to explore!

This is a very scenic and photogenic viewpoint (in good weather). We've stopped here a few times when in the area and sometimes get a few good images. Love the Oregon coast. Parking could be an issue in the Summer months although we've never had a problem. Great place to take a break from driving, take a few pictures and perhaps enjoy a picnic lunch.

Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint is a state park located in Bandon, Oregon. There is an indian legend about this location. Some say they can see Princess Ewanua's face on the rock looking upwards towards the heavens, and some even hear her voice in the wind. In 1931, J. F. Kronenberg of Bandon donated the land to the state. Today this area is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. Home to 300 species of migratory birds. Face Rock State Viewpoint has a parking lot, picnic tables, viewing areas, restrooms, and a stairway step trail leading down to the beach. Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge includes all the rock formations and tidel flats along the coast. A must visit if in the area.

Oh! It was so cold and windy, but worth the stop for the sunset and the view. Parking was easy and we will be back for sure.

Through the years, coastal towns have gone to great lengths to attract visitors. There are…read morefestivals, of course, but I'm more fascinated by the wacky ways that some places have tried to generate buzz. Like ghost stories and bizarre events like the Redhead Roundup they used to have in Lincoln City. But as a visitor to your city, I'm really interested in three things: -- Easy (free) parking -- Collection of shops and restaurants within walking distance -- That certain something that is hard to quantify and highly subjective - charm Bandon-by-the-Sea has all this and more. But rather than mention the city in general, I need to call attention to the Port of Bandon and River Walk. Along the Coquille River in Old Town they've built and beautifully maintained a number of visitor friendly attractions. A pier for fishing and crabbing (they provide free life vests for kids), an outdoor amphitheater and enclosed picnic shelter. Even during the summer months, coastal towns can be windy and chilly, so having a glass structure on the pier so you can enjoy the view without the cold is very welcoming. The shelter has one large community table and chairs all uniquely carved out of wood. They even have an outlet for those wanting to hop on their laptop or charge their phone. Bandon Fish Market is close by and very crowded, so a lot of people were grabbing food to go and eating it here. The River Walk is filled with public art and is located right in the heart of Old Town. I think my son pet over 100 dogs that afternoon. So kudos to Bandon for making it easy and fun to visit your city.

Kudos to the local municipality for knowing all of the correct priorities for a tourist hot spot…read moreand then some: 1) Spacious, free, public parking in the quaint bustling little "old town" tourist hub. Including boat trailer and RV parking. 2) Clean, free, centrally located public bathrooms. 3) A freaking water fountain/ water bottle filler. Praise be. And thank you. 4) A WORKING bike repair center complete with tools and a pump!!!! This saved my bacon during our recent visit- brought the bikes, forgot the pump. OOPS. (and the local bike repair place is closed this week- seriously made all the difference here.) 5) Public access fishing and crabbing Pier complete w/ local art and a boardwalk. Out of the ballpark, Bandon.
