I ordered the "Tator Tots." Regardless, I was excited, the menu described the little spuds as mini little explosions in your mouth. To wit, the tator tots are supposed to be covered in cheese, bacon, chives, and some other delicious things (but I remember sour cream was not in the concoction). I was hoping to share these little goodies with the table. Develop some goodwill since I sullied Joseph's (husband of Mary) good name. Much to my dismay, what came out were unadorned tator tots, with a ramekin of ketchup. What the fuck! I especially wanted a friend's approval since he is a cook at Bakin' & Eggs. They were still crispy, delicious, and enjoyed all around; even sans carcinogenic pork. My beer came, and I am not going to lie, it was amazing. I don't drink much. When I go out, a few Amstel Lights (as suggested in Men's Health) and that is good enough. Well, Smithwick's kicks Amstel in the gonads, rips them out with its bare hands, and stuffs them with cream cheese before consumption. It was a tremendous beer. I have have started up again going here on Wednesday nights for trivia. I like the usual trivia guy, but the prizes are usually lame like 2 tickets to a Sox game or a bike to split among 6 people on a team. Even worse is when you win pint glasses. I still go though, because it is fun and they have a newer server, a nice guy, who is much better than that horrible lady that used to work here. So I come for the fun people and trivia, not for the prizes. I would like to go on a nontrivia night some time and sit outside for dinner and drinks, as they have a little outside area and really good food. This was the first spot I visited after landing in Chicago for a first-time visit. My wife and I were walking around the area and spotted this beautiful bar on a street corner. We walked in and could not decide if we wanted to sit inside next to an open window or on the spacious deck. We opted for sitting inside so that I could watch some ESPN on their flat screen over the bar. The drink selection was excellent. They offer several different draft beers including a few locals brews. It was a shame we didn't visit on a Sunday because the $25 mimosa brunch sounds very tempting! I ended up getting an Angus burger with BBQ and bacon and it did not disappoint. I have no negative things to say about this place. I came here on a Saturday because one of my best friends and I were ready to get our mimosa on. Their website is pretty out of date and mentions joining them 'every weekend for their $20 mimosa brunch.' HOWEVER, $20 bottomless mimosa's are on Sunday only - they do have $10 carafe's which I think ends up being a better deal because we only bought two of them. Whoever made them is God's gift to Mimosa Heaven because they were PERFECT and not all orange juice. My friend and I both ordered the breakfast sliders, which took a bit to come out (and we were the only ones in there that had ordered food) and when they did the biscuits were a little dry, but it was pretty good overall. The service was good, the inside was cute, but the music was a little TOO bumpin' for brunch. This is a solid, laid back bar in Lakeview. I've been here several times and each time had a good experience. Service is good every time. There is always a decent beer selection. This place is especially great because there's always seats available here even during Bulls/Blackhawks/Bears game. They have specials each night of the week too. Food here is also pretty good. Mahoney's is right by my apartment so whenever I am in need of a brew or a drink I had to Mahoney's. I love going here and have very few qualms with it. One of my favorite aspects to the bar is its patio. Clearly only useful in the spring and summer (when it is nice out), but when it is nice, the patio is awesome. The drinks are pretty standard, prices aren't cheap, but they aren't ridiculous. They do however serve up some large glasses of whiskey. The service is good, not great, ranges from who is working. The food however, the food get's its own review. Considering this is pub food, this may be the best pub food in the city. I kid you not. I have had a few of their different burgers which are all amazing, the loaded tater tots are phenomenal, and they also have a steak sandwich that is top notch. The food alone gets 5 stars no problem. Service can sometimes be a little slow if it's super busy, but the food is great and you can't beat the convenience or daily specials. When the Cubs were in the playoffs, this was a great place to catch the game. Highly recommend the burgers, sweet potato fries and cheese curds. I live nearby and have been several times. On the plus side, the food is good, they have great prices on their daily specials, and they usually have a well-priced drink special each month. Generally speaking, it would take a lot to make me unhappy with four-dollar premium beers and good food specials (not to mention the nice summer patio)...but alas, it happened. My first time in, the small pub was nearly empty, and even so it took a very long time to receive our drinks. This was after asking for more than 20 seconds to look at the drink list and getting the "could you PLEASE waste more of my time" look from our delightful server. Once we ordered food, the same thing happened, but I must say the barbecue wings are seriously fantastic. Second time in...sit at the bar with a friend...order food...wait 25 minutes (again...empty)...get the wrong food...wait 20 minutes...get food, eat, enjoy. If they could get their service together, I would be there all the time. A little tip: if bitchy queen appears on someone's resume, find another struggling rock star/art student/down-on-their-luck tattoo artist to serve drinks and pub grub. read more

The mimosas kept coming in giant water-sized pitchers even when we had paid out and were ready to go, to which the waitress easily got an extra chunk of change from us. Everyone was happy with their orders, especially my extra cheese Western omelet, which oozed with cheesy goodness. I've been here twice and felt the same way about the food each time- for what you're getting, it's definitely overpriced (especially when compared to nearby businesses which offer much higher quality food for same price). Both times I went on Tuesday- their specials for the day are $5 burger/fries and $5 drafts. I started with the wings as an appetizer. All apps are somewhat overpriced. Most are in the $9-10 range. The wings were tasty, but definitely on the small end. I believe it came with 7 or 8 small wings. The burger comes with lettuce and tomato and tots or fries- cheese will cost $1 extra, avacado $1.50, and most other toppings $0.50. I ordered medium both times and got well done both times. The meat is flavorless and lean. I only finished half. Considering a burger with all the fixin's is normally around $13, the quality is very low. Go to Kuma's corner for the same price for a burger that will blow this one out of the water. I did not feel the $5 was even worth it for this burger. The servers were pretty nice, expect for the fact that I felt very rushed. A few minutes after getting my burger (and I was still clearly eating), a busser came and tried to take it away. I had to stop him and say "wait! I just got that!". People came to clear plates about 3-4 times as I was trying to chat with my friend. Keep in mind I was only here for a total of 45 minutes. All in all, it's very underwhelming for a price point where they are competing with places that offer very creative and tasty alternatives for the same items. They should either increase the quality of the food or decrease the price to $ instead of $$. read more

I've walked past this place plenty of times, as I live close by and am intrigued by their advertisement of $0.35 wing mondays. This past Friday for my birthday, a couple friends and I decided to start our drinking binge here at F. O'Mahony's. If the bartender hadn't been hot and pouring me new drinks before I could ask him for the check, I would have left after the first (second) drink, because the drinks look a little small and seemed pricey. He was really laying it on thick, and was pouring drinks as if he was gonna pay for them. Bottom Line: I liked the vibe of the place, the food smelled good (even though plenty reviews on this site speak to the contrary), and the help is attractive. I would go back to see what Mondays, or Wednesdays are like. 1. The website is pretty much nonexistent, and is always the first thing I look at when trying to decide where to go spend my money. 2. I never once was offered a menu (we left to go and get food). 3. If it hadn't been my Bday and I was paying the bill, I probably wouldn't have been happy with the way he handed out the booze without asking (he gave us free drinks, and it still seemed pricey). read more

Great spot for a Sunday-funday, as the brunch has bottom-less mimosas. It gets to be quite the scene in there after a few hours of drunken-ness. We also like to stop in on the various evenings when there is a game on. They have a good selection of TVs. Lastly we enjoy stopping in for a drink after work when the outdoor seating is available. It's always a great day when you go to Chicago trivia at F O'Mahony's! I don't have cable and they always have "the game" on (whatever that game may be, I'm a big hockey fan so it's nice to have a place to go to watch the Stanley Cup playoffs). The waiter is wonderful and recognizes you week after week, which says a lot about the character of this place. He's great at recommending things he thinks you would like. The guy, who I later determined I loved because he was uber nice, sarcastic and cute, actuallly just wiped up the poo with a stack of napkins while commenting he was going to then dip his hands into the fryer to disinfect. GROSS. I ran outside to wipe my feet in the grass and discovered that poo was also directly in front of the door. HAHA awesome. I saw some guys later go and dump hot water to wash it away. The rest of the night we would get wafts of poo....that doesn't mix well with burgers. Wednesday night is Trivia Night, free trivia. $1 sliders and $11 pitchers can top off the night. Service was much better this night than the previous night when the mean girl was working. I'll make another appearance at some point because the trivia is fun but it's not a place I would frequent. Finley's, now called F.O. Mahoney's due to a potential lawsuit from Finley Dunnes, is a great neighborhood spot, rain or shine. The inside is cozy, almost all wood, and perfect for those cold winter nights. The beer selection isn't bad, and they serve up some yummy coffee drinks for those cold nights. I live practically next door, so I've been there my fair share of times. The bartenders are friendly people and they remember you, which is awesome. In the summer they have a great patio, and that makes up for them cutting their menu in half. The food is still good, there's just not as much to choose from as there was before. read more

Let me start by saying that I like local pubs/bars. I like Irish bars, and I like anything new that gives it a go in my neighborhood. I was really excited when a new place was opening up only a block and a half a way from my home. Who doesn't like a bar stumbling distance from their home? My area is fairly under served by bars, pubs, and the like with the exception of the Boystown clubs. Finley Mahony"s is not a very big bar, nor a very unique one in its Irish theme. It does strive to keep itself different offering good, but pricey pub inspired food. The place is usually kept clean and well maintained by its small staff. The limited restroom space seems to be a regular issue here. I don't have anything really against this bar, but feel a sense of loss for what it could have been. As I stated before I really, really wanted a good local place. Something with character and comfort that was near to home. It doesn't need to be Cheers, but should be different from the other bars anywhere else. The music, often dance/club style, doesn't fit with the Irish theme. The pricey food isn't really in line with the local/neighborhood joint they try to be. And the staff...well not exactly the friendliest or warmest people about. That said, I still go there and grab a drink or tow on my way home from work, or on my way out for the night. I don't suggest it as a place to meet people, and I don't consider it my destination bar. read more

I tried this place with a little trepidation, because the most recent reviews seem to be the most mediocre, and ended up going there only because it was close. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was friendly and attentive, and checked up on us just the right amount. I had the chicken and biscuits, which was fantastic. My dining companions had a burger and the grilled cheese and tomato soup. I didn't try the burger, but the tots that came with them were cooked perfectly - just the right amount of crisp. Maybe the best tots I've had in the city. The only down side was my first beer, which tasted a little stale. Maybe they were near the end of the keg or something. So many people say the "Spot" is the place to be, yet I disagree! This pub is warm and cozy and the personalities behind the bar like to have fun, and interact well with the patrons. It caters to a good mix of people, as it sits on the fringe of boystown. A couple of weeks back, we went to a bourbon tasting. $10 for a sampling of 5 single barrel bourbons, an informal education and supper. It was a steal in this economic climate! This is a lovely place and I don't understand why it's not more crowded. The real "sleeper" is their Sunday brunch. The hangover skillet is fantastic, as are the other dishes I've tried. And yet, it's hardly ever crowded. In the nice weather, the patio is open and the windows wide-open as well. Plus, it's dog-friendly on the patio. I only went here for lunch on a Saturday when business hadn't yet picked up, so this review is only for their food. Can't comment on what the place is like during Cubs or Hawks games, later at night, etc. I went here with someone for lunch, expecting standard, run-of-the-mill bar food. We both opted for the burger, which pleasantly surprised us. As someone who's very familiar with high-end burgers (Kuma's, Rock's) I was surprised how good this burger was. You start off by choosing your patty (beef, turkey, or vegetarian) and any number of toppings (extra for additional toppings after a certain point). I also opted for the tater tots over the fries. In a nutshell, the burger was amazing. Juicy, delicious, and big. And the tater tots were delicious, too...but then again they're just tater tots. Would I go again? Probably, but I'm not a bar person so I'd personally go only during down hours to avoid the bar crowd. read more
