I haven't been to any major events here, but I've been quite happy to walk through and have a look at new paintings and stuff. The people in there aren't normally snobby or pretentious, unlike some of the clientele. If you've got an interest in art, have a look.

As High St in Armadale is a little bit of a hub for art galleries I had to have a look through a…read morefew and see what style appealed to me most. The Metro Gallery stood out most for me because of the interesting blends of contemporary and Indigenous art. The paintings had an edge unlike many of the other galleries where I like art to ask questions and be challenging. Don't get me wrong a like the pretty paintings as well but as a viewer I feel like I get much more out of the different and more surrealist pieces. I would love to attend an exhibition there sometime to seeing some of the other works done by the talented artists. Worth a look if you like interesting, modern art.

After driving past the building that hosts Artbank a few times, I finally managed to break up my…read moreday and stop for a visit. What is Artbank? It's an art rental establishment which was established in 1980 by the Australian Government as an arts support program. We're sold already! Part of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Office for the Arts, Artbank promotes the diverse Australian culture and offers everybody the chance to enjoy Australian art by offering the collection for rent. The revenues from the rentals are then reinvesting back in to the collection. Sweet! Walk through the sunlight filled space and you'll find a large group of artworks by emerging artists from paintings and photography, to contemporary craft, sculpture and Indigenous art. (We hear the whole Artbank collection has over 10,000 contemporary artworks for rental) And even though we'd love to have more art at home, our walls don't have the space for it right now. Just in case, we found out the costs involved anyway and were pleased to discover that rental fees start from $110 per artwork, with the minimum contract total of $550 per year. And for businesses, fees are 100% tax deductible.

No, the shop is not that big but it has an amazing collection of animation art and Rock and Roll photography. Comic book fans will love the limited edition hand painted classics inclusing Batman, Catwoman, the Joker, Spiderman and the Super friends. They also carry a good range of very rare pieces on canvas and paper. Rock and Roll fans will also love the photographic images taken by Dezo Hoffman who was hired by The Beatles to be their first professional photographer when they first made their mark in music history. There are over 50 different images including shots of their first ever recording session at Abbey Road, The Cavern, and The Sgt Pepper album release. The Star Wars exhibition at the Silver K Gallery was a little under whelming. From the write ups…read moreyou'd think it would take you an hour or do to see everything - justifying an admittance charge. There are three main areas, two downstairs and one upstairs. No photography is allowed. The staff are friendly and the building has character. The pieces are impressive, but not worth the cover charge. Perhaps one charge per gathering would be more justifiable, instead of an individual charge. The only saving grace is you can go back multiple times - if you keep your gallery guide. However I don't know why you'd venture back a second time. I wouldn't suggest you make a special trip like we did, but if you're in the area maybe consider it. Enjoy.

When I lived in South Yarra, I used to pass by Mossgreen and often wondered what it was. A large…read moresculpture outside gave it a commanding feel that could only mean two things. It was either an Art lovers home or an art museum. Unable to stop my curiosity any longer I decided to venture there to find out for myself. And my second guess was right! Mossgreen is a gallery that has three spacious levels which you can access via a glass elevator. The gallery represents approximately thirty artists from emerging to established artists working in diverse media including painters, sculptors, ceramicists and mixed media artists. Natural light bathes each floor from the floor to ceiling windows and the gallery is well distributed so you can admire the various artworks in peace. The gallery also has a front courtyard which allows for special preview nights in summer while a cute café which opens on Saturday, makes this the perfect boutique art experience.

Extremely unethical operators and I would caution anyone planning on dealing with them - buyers and…read moresellers alike. I won an auction through them, and bid hundreds of dollars higher than their anticipated figure. I received notification that the auction was closing, then that the auction had closed, and I was the winning bidder. A short while later they REOPENED THE AUCTION AND TOOK ANOTHER BID AND THEN CLOSED IT AGAIN! In all my years bidding at auction I have never seen the like. But after reading other dissatisfied clients, it doesn't surprise me. Horrible experience. Caveat emptor, or in this case, winner beware!

These days, all you have to do is go to the local mall or speciality shops that specialise in bringing culture to the masses. Just Africa is one such store and is dedicated to offering the best in traditional and contemporary African art and handcrafts. Filled with a wide selection of colourful, tribal artefacts such as safari printed table runners, artwork, gorgeous wood carved bowls and décor and loud, graphical ceramics. It also carries a huge range of delightfully Sisal baskets with lovely patterns and embroidered cushions depicting some of Africa's best loved animals and safari prints. But my all time favourite: the wood carved Colonial figures which add a touch of satire to life.
