Salty Sea Charters - Steve & Josh with a "Rock Fish"

Fished with Captian Josh on 6/8/2012 on a 4 hour salmon fishing charter during a shore excursion…read morefrom our HAL cruise. Definitely 4 hours is not long enough but Josh did everything he could to make it productive and comfortable. 4 adults fished and my nephew and neice did a ride along ($50 per ride along). Captain Josh is a born and raised Ketchikan local so he knows the area well and is super accomodating to cruise visitors (like us). He did warn us that fishing has been slow the past few days and he was so worried that we wouldn't catch anything. In the last 45 mins we did catch a 28lb salmon, but we totally did not feel that our day was wasted. The scenery is breath taking, there was bald eagles everywhere and tons of jelly fish in the water so for first timers to Ketchikan, we had a great time. There's a lot of other charters out there and the cruise lines actually offer their own but Salty Sea Charter was a good $60 cheaper and I feel, more personalized as we were dealing with the mass crowd of a cruise line booking. If I ever have the priviledge of visiting Ketchikan again, I'd definitely go fishing with Satly Sea Charters again. Pros: -The boat was really clean and nice. Spacious enough for 7 big bodies person to hang out in -They provided snacks and drinks (chips, some AMAZING smoked salmon made by Josh the day before & cookies.) -Can bring beer on the boat -Can sashimi your catch on the boat too! But we just didn't have time to do it =( -Josh handled all the baiting and rig set up so all you had to do was reel em' in. -captian Josh was friendly, honest and easy to talk to, very important if you're gonna be sitting together on a boat waiting for a while. Cons: -the fish weren't biting that day!

This was a perfect option as we were only in port from 6-1. It was incredible!!! Beautiful day, nice boat, awesome captain (Josh) and an absolutely, fantastic time fishing. Don't let me forget Ivy, who took care of all the back office work. Thanks Ivy!! Once we caught our salmon limit, Josh kept us out for our full time on board and tried for King Salmon. Caught a few Rock Fish and a few King Salmon, but too small, one being only 1/8" too short of the 28" min! We completely respected Josh's honesty by releasing the "not legal" salmon back to the water. We have so many memories & pictures of a wonderful time with Salty Sea Charters. Super fun people and would go back and fish with them any chance we get!!!! Josh & Ivy.... YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!! Thank you for an incredible experience. Steve & Stacy Craig of Auburn, California

If you go in their gift show you can see a video of the boat in the show. I had my doubts about this excursion. I wasn't really looking forward to it as it didn't seem interesting to me. As it turns out I loved it. My favorite bit was seeing all the eagles up close. We didn't see much wild life on our Alaskan Cruise. We saw two harbor Seas at the glacier and the back of a whale on the same boat. So seeing the eagles was a rush. We weren't promised eagles on this excursion. As it turns out you will see the eagles where the salmon our during salmon season snacking on fresh salmon. Since we were there the week of June 9, 2025 before salmon season we saw eagles. Dut to the boat goes into indigenous waters they are allowed to feed the eagles frozen fish. This only works when it's not during salmon season. As during salmon season they prefer fresh salmon. They would through the frozen fish in the water and the eagles would scoop them up. It was execrating. We saw so many eagles and I got so many good shots of them on my point and shoot camera with a zoom. This was the highlight of the excursion. I am a selfie lover and I even felt comfortable handing my camera to staff members and other guests and getting even better pictures of us. This was the perfect excursion for great pictures. We went on the second deck and a staff member was taking pictures of people with the Bouyes and giant crab traps. We sat on the first deck. It was pleasant weather so we didn't need there long rain coats, but I believe the people on the top deck had them as it was a little windy up there. We had 3rd row seats and that was perfect. The first row was designated for handicapped and allowed for wheelchairs. We had 2 people in front row seats in wheelchairs and they were very comfortable. During the crews talks they stopped and let us hold the crabs. One was a standard crab and another was a box crab that we were allowed to hold and take pictures with. I also got to hold a starfish. I though it would be prickly but it turned out to be very soft to the touch. The crew showed us how they pulled in the crab traps and talked about their experiences being on the crabbing boat. It was very interesting. I loved the hands on experience of it all. In the end I was really glad I went on this excursion. It was expensive, but in the end with all the hands on and great pictures we came away with it was money well spent. I'm all about the pictures.
