This is by far the worst car finance experience I've had in the last 45 years paid off my car early in January. We are now in May and I still haven't received my title of release from the department of motor vehicles due to the finance companies errors after many phone calls, even speak with the supervisor there's way too many in discrepancies of their stories. Nobody knows what they're really doing except reading off notes that make no sense and contradict themselves. Save yourself the headache and go through a reparable car finance. Poor customer service all around from the agent to management. Very condescending and unable to help if you have any issues. Paid my payment a week in advance the website accepted my bank info that wasn't correct, processed the payment, then a week later, emailed me that my payment had been returned and I was past due.... On top of charging a late fee that they won't waive. Agents had no idea what to do or offer any kind of explanation aside from blaming me. Mind you, this was my FIRST payment to them, so there was no kind of waiver as a courtesy or anything. Despite them not thoroughly verifying and checking bank information, then if you need a manager they will put you on hold and if it goes over 2 minutes they have to hang up. Agents apparently can't transfer you to a queue they MUST be on the other line to transfer the call. "Manager's" tone was rude as if she had anything better to do than assist with the request while at work. The loan process was okay. When it came time to recive the title to the vehicle I paid off they sent it to the wrong address. They then said they emailed me a lean release form to take to the dmv, which I did not recive, and I would have to pay the dmv for the title that I had already paid for. Customer service rep was not very helpful with this situation. I asked for a supervisor and was on hold for 30 mins. In the end I hope to receive the paperwork to be able to get the title to the car. "You can move your payment to the end of the loan". "What happens if I do that?" "You can keep making payments". That is the response I got every time we needed help and I ask, what happens if I do that? They NEVER said we would only have 120 days to payoff the balance after the loan matured. I'm a disabled person who had hand controls in my vehicle and now I'm without a vehicle and not able to even borrow one because my legs don't work. This company is awful. The only reason I gave them 1 star is because there was no option to give them a 0. The customer service representatives don't listen and give standard answers to specific questions. I received a letter stating I had to pay off my loan in 30 days but from my calculations I still had 6 months left. In the first year of the loan, I changed jobs and the company paused my payments for 3 months and explained that I would still owe all interest and fees. I understood and agreed, I never received anything in writing until they sent me the letter saying I had 1 month to pay it off and if I continued to pay my regular payment they would be considered delinquent and reported to all 3 credit agencies, after making on time payments for 5 years. I paid the balance in full and when I asked for the clear title, I was told that I would have to wait 24 days. Please do not do business with this company. I feel like I've been punished for paying off my loan. I added the response I got from Exeter and when I called the 800 number I got a representative who had no idea of why I would be calling them. I started my voluntary repossession on July 1, 2024. It is now August 6, 2024. They are saying that the managers have to approved k the voluntary repossession. I recently moved from California to Alabama. To register my car in Alabama I needed a copy of my title. The first request I sent was to fax it to the Alabama license commission. I was told that it would take 48 to 72 hours. At the end of 72 hours it hadn't arrived. I called again. They declined to send it because of incomplete information. This time they said that they would fix it. I requested this time they email to the license commission. They did. It was encrypted and couldn't be accessed by the license commission. Third time I requested they send it to my personal email. They ensured that I would receive it within 48 hours. Once again they declined it because of "incomplete information ". We made a payment to our son's account with a credit card (They did not inform us they didn't take 'credit' cards, only debit, so we got charged with an interest payment ACCRUED DAILY and a bank advance fee. I wish I could give a lower review. In my opinion this company is not reliable and should not be trusted with your money. Refinance as soon as possible or return the vehicle immediately and seek other financing. My opinion is based on this. My husband & I financed his car back in the beginning of '18. We got a hold of Exeter because it was the 2nd week of March '18 and no welcome letter, we spoke with a nice rep that was able to verify us and I started up our online profile so we could make our payments via the website. During that call I asked the rep if I sent more than payment amount if it would go towards the next payment or directly to the principal. The rep said it would go towards the principal. I asked again differently to make sure that it went to principal and not towards the next month's payment. Again she said that it goes to the principal. The payment amounts are $XXX.XX Fast forward. We have made over-payments for 2/3 of our payments. My husband noticed in our past statements that the min payment for some were very low and then shot back up again. Online the only payment amount given was the $XXX.XX. So today (07/30/2019) I called and asked if I asked why the payments were varied and if the over-payment was going to the principal or the next payment. The lady told me that it was going toward the next "principal payment". So I had her clarify and she said that all over-payments go toward the next payment. I told her about the conversation that I had with the other rep back when we first got the loan. She then stated that the policy had recently changed. I asked when because we were never notified of the change. She said that it was recent so the rep probably did not know of the change. I kept pressing for a date because transparency in finance is very important and that all policy changes need to be relayed to the customers. She said it was an internal memo and there was no way that she could give me a copy. (BTW she put me on hold several times). I told her there had to be something that was sent out, I wanted a copy to see when it was changed. Of course if it was changed recently that affects our payments prior to the change. Plus is it the customer right to know of any changes that can affect their account. After several holds she came back with that the policy changed in January 2018 and that the rep must not have been made aware of the change (in Feb). I asked yet again for some sort of documentation showing exactly when the change was to be put in effect. She refused to supply with anything, at first saying that the document only exist as an internal memo. She then tried to confuse me with saying that my over-payments WERE going to the principal, the "principal payment." There is no such this as a "principal payment". I had to break it down to her at least 3 times that there is a big difference between principal payments (a payment that goes directly to the principal amount usually added to the minimum payment in varying ways) and a minimum payment that goes against the principal after satisfying the interest. Also why principal payments are NOT the same thing, because of the daily interest that occurs and it is all a financial thing that takes a bit to explain if you do not have an education in finance. She finally came back after the last hold after I demanded some sort of letter that should have been sent out to the existing customers about over-payment policy changes and was told that I would need to submit IN WRITING a letter asking for when the policy changed. She could not provide me with any sort of letter. I then asked for the mailing address and she said that she could transfer me to make the request. I repeated what she said about it having to be in writing. She finally gave me the fax number and was about to give me the email address when I asked for the physical address to submit my request. I told her that I really didn't need to have an email address because most business do not accept electronic transmissions as written requests, except for faxing. I have both the fax and address now, however I do not think that they will send me any honest communication. For the record the first time we talked with them was in March 2018, so if it truly was changed in January 2018 then the following is true: 1. The change was not recent being that it is July 2019. 2. Their customer service reps are not properly trained to give customer proper information about their policies. 3. Because their representatives ARE representing the company and we take them on their word the policies they repeat to us are accurate to the current policy then their communications are verbal contracts in which the company has given them apparent authority to enact such. 4. Any changes to policy must be given in writing, in advance, to the customer within a reasonable time frame or else they are liable. BTW, yes, I did record the entire call. read more
