The Et Cetera Gallery combines a vital public service psychological rehabilitation with an art gallery. I've never heard of anything like this in my life, so a sense of intrigue dragged me to Darnley Road on a blistering winter afternoon. It's also a stone's throw away from one of my favourite bike workshops (Kiwi Cycles) so I figured a cultural detour couldn't hurt.
I'm glad I did. After asking around I was definitely inspired by the creative and social aims of the space. People that use the Psychological Rehabilitation Association get the opportunity to flex their creative muscles in a purpose built space.
The emphasis here is less about flashy-looking white cubes and freely flowing wine at preview parties and more about giving people the space to realise their latent artistic talents.
You can go and see the art as a non member (there were no wall texts so I couldn't look up people's work), but be aware of the fact that you're in someone else's studio space, so respect is paramount! The programme behind the studio is non-pressurised responsive to the members' needs. They also sell art, and I noticed a few great abstract paintings that I would have happily parted cash with, if I had any spare.
They have a lovely veranda at the rear, which would be ideal for hazy summer preview nights. I had issues getting a definitive answer on the opening hours from people though rumour has it, this place is open from 10 till 4pm so I'd definitely call in advance of popping down. read more
