Afro World Manchester

Afro World Manchester

The regeneration of Hulme in the late'80's and early '90's brought many invaluable businesses to…read morethis area and facing Hulme market, Afro World is one of them. I am a curly girl with tresses which vary from sleek and shiny on a good day, to a frizzy halo- depending on the weather. Although certain high street chains and chemists have woken up to the fact that yes, we are a multicultural Britain with a diverse population who have individual needs, their range of products for people of colour can be very limited. This is not a political rant, it is a cold, hard, consumer fact. Afro World is a saving grace and "limited" is not a word that applies here. Having entered its hallowed doors, you have never seen so many hair and skin products in your life! There are rows and rows stocking brands such as Soft n Free, Dark n Lovely, Ultra Sheen and Pink, to name but a few- seriously the shop sells hundreds of them. The name of this store is a tad misleading as this mecca also sells makes for European and Asian hair types. You can buy a good quality real hair wig for only £29, extensions, and curly or straight pony tails line the shelves and offer you the ability to alter your appearance every day of the week. Handy for Geminis or international spies. The owners really know their stock inside and out. This is an incredible talent, considering how many lines are sold there, and they are always on hand to give you help and advice. Not many men ( with the obvious exception of hairdressers) are able to discuss with you whether you suit a wavy weave or a head full of corn rows in a truly macho fashion. Afro World also sells a good range of make-up for Asian and Afro-Caribbean skin and various hair accessories . It is open Mon-Sat 9am-6pm and on Sunday from 11am-5pm. Be aware that the shop is closed for prayer on Fridays from 1.30-2.30pm. So if you fancy a wicked weave, exceptional extensions or just need to stock up on your Kirby grips then this shop has it all.

Whilst Lush is supposed to be a caring inclusive company, I have found as an ex employee that this…read moreparticular store was dreadful. Permanent staff were treated like children even though most had more experience in retail than the manager. The Disaplinary threats metered out for supposed infractions were legendary. Once I had informed them I would be retiring in January 2026, the months leading up to this date were filled with an environment that made me feel like I was being pushed out. I was asked to carry out treatments on customers that I had little or no training in and when I said I didnt feel comfortable doing this, you guessed it, I was threatened with a disciplinary. I was ill with anxiety and worry every time a shift came up, but no one ever contacted me to ask if I was okay. Eventually I left earlier than I had intended as going in to work had become a nightmare. I still havent received a leaving interview, but thats not surprising. Management have laws for them and laws for the shop floor staff and woe betide anyone who crosses them. I discovered that management were keeping files on the staff of any comments that were made that deemed as not being in line with the respect at work policy, even noting down comments made in private and outside of the workplace that had nothing to do with Lush. All the time management were making comments about customers and staff that were appalling. At a time when I really needed support and help from the management, one member who I thought of as a good friend, threw me under the bus. Rather than deal with the petty and wholly unfair procedures they were attempting to implement I chose to leave. Such a shame, I had originally really enjoyed working at this Lush store, the shop floor staff were lovely and we were a really good team. There does not seem to be any way to complain about the management of a store, without the powers that be, telling the complainant to discuss it with the management! How is that supposed to work? Personnel were non existent in their help and I felt were not interested. From what I gather, only one member of the permanent staff is still working there, so that tells its own story doesn't it?

As a huge lush fan i often can't resist popping in to have a look around when I am in the…read morefrenchgate shopping centre. They offer a good range of lush products and the staff are always enthusiastic and helpful. Recently bought one of my husbands birthday presents (Happy hippy shower gel) and the staff member (who was dressed as a pirate at the time) gave good advice regarding a similar product under the Retro range and seemed to really know what he was talking about. Keep an eye out for their offers as some can be great and their website also offers good offers.
