I didn't have time to have a full meal here, YET, as we only had a few minutes. BUT, what I did have was amazing. We stopped in for a drink and we're served amazing fresh home made chips and salsa. We ordered some guacamole which was delicious and huge! Prices were very reasonable, the place is cool looking and has nice indoor and outdoor seating. Wow!!! I had high hopes for this restaurant as it had great reviews and a great star rating. So with a huge disappointment, I write my experience that I had this evening: Food: I ordered the carne asada burrito with rice and beans. I also ordered the 1/2 carne asada fries. First, the carne asada burrito tasted like it was all meat. If I wanted to eat a mouth full of meat (unseasoned) then I would of ordered a steak. Also, the restaurant had a great idea of grilling their meat as charbroiled but when you don't clean the grill after and thereafter, all that "Char" carried to the next meat and that is exactly what I tasted.....a DRIED carne asada with burnt char bits in every bite...it was DISGUSTING!!! It also carried onto the fries....Wow!!..... Service: The staff were friendly and nice but we almost waited for the check as much as it took us to dine there.....not happy (20 minutes for the check) Location: Max capacity of the location is 20 PEOPLE !!!! They really need to invest in a bigger location. Also, they had 2 ventilation systems and 3 fans which the temperature felt no less than 80 degrees.....omg..... So what can I tell you.....what a huge let down.... It may be possibly the drinks that make this place a 4/5 stars because the food is on the opposite side of the spectrum..... also they overall check was $35.00 for 2.5 entrees and water which yes.... there was a lot of quantity but it definitely was.....quantity over quality...... This place has semi-legit Mexican food, although the absence of a good horchata made my heart sad, the chamoy margarita more than made up for it! It's a nice and cozy...seriously, be prepared to wait for a hot minute as it's literally a hole in the wall with just a handful of tables. PROS: Endless chips & salsa, my carnitas plate was pretty bomb, huge margaritas, upbeat atmosphere, cute benches to sit and wait out front. CONS: Small & crowded, two different orders of enchiladas with red sauce (the sauce was flavorless, watery and tasted like it came straight out of a tin can, THE WAITRESS, just looked so unhappy. As she took our order for a party of 6, not including drinks & appetizers, she just seemed to zone out, nodding, mumbling, never making eye contact, and never repeated our orders at the end even with one order asking for substitutions. Oh, did I mention she didn't write anything down? My friend assured me that there are people like that in the food industry who have done this for so long that they are truly gifted and we wouldn't have issues. WRONG, everything was all funked up, hence the docking of stars. The guacamole dip was also nothing to write home about, I can make it better. The kicker for us was their DEEP FRIED ice cream we ordered. Don't waste your time or money...it was a greasy fried tostada bowl with ice cream dumped in it. Honestly, as cute as this place was, I'd probably look for something closer to us. This was our 10 year anniversary dinner and I was underwhelmed just by the service alone. You definitely have to navigate around their busy hours to cut down on the wait time as they are too small of an establishment to take reservations, and I guess it'll be a hit or miss on what you order. Stopped by after venue hunting in Fallbrook. Fish tacos were double wrapped with sturdy corn tortillas. At first sight I thought they may taste too fried or bready, but wow were those some tasty fish tacos! They were topped with cabbage, pico and a great cream dressing which was so light and refreshing. Tasted a lot like a sour cream, but a bit lighter. The chip basket includes fried flour and corn tortillas, but they weren't my favorite. The salsa is good - like a mild pico de gallo. The "medium" sized margarita I'd describe more as a large, it was a great size. After experiencing so many frozen Texas margaritas and realizing Cali doesn't always do blended drinks well, I was pleasantly surprised to see the frozen strawberry margarita was a great, thick blended consistency. Not one of those semi frozen, liquid-sinks-to-the-bottom type drinks. The beans and rice came out piping hot with melted cheese - no complaints there! read more

Great find in Fallbrook! Small place, but so good! Being from texas I'm very particular about my mexican food and especially chips and salsa... the chips are made in house and both corn and flour! The salsa seems made fresh and is so good we got some to go. We also ordered tortilla soup with chicken (grilled chicken breast!) And chicken fajitas (although not served on the typical sizzle plate, nothing to turn your nose up at) basically everything we ate was wonderful! Plus looking around at other tables, food looked yummy and fresh, with large portions, bot to mention most people practically licked their plate clean. We will def be back. Honestly I'm so upset right now. Ive always liked this restaurant and told my out of town guests that it's the best Mexican food in Fallbrook... until today. Halfway through my meal I felt something in my throat. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom to try to get it out. At first I thought I might've been a chip or something. I couldn't get it out even with a water flosser when I got home. I ended up putting a flashlight in my throat and found... A FINGER NAIL STICKING STRAIGHT OUT OF MY THROAT. I literally had to use tweezers to remove it from my tonsil area. It was making me bleed and causing a lot of pain... because someone obviously either clipped their nails in the kitchen or didn't properly care for their hand hygiene while cooking. This place has amazing flavors. Im not big on Mexican food but Fallbrook Motors recommended it and my wife was craving Mexican so I went with it. I had a half shrimp, half steak burrito, very delicious and my wife had a Tostada bowl but substitute with shrimp and chipotle sauce on the side. There are a few minor things that made me rate 4 stars instead of five. I ordered a burrito half shrimp, half steak. Anywhere else I have done half in half you get both ingredients as you eat. Well I had about 3/4 of a steak burrito and 1/4 of the burrito was shrimp and they were completely separated, meaning I never got a piece of shrimp as I was eating steak. As you can imagine, I was almost done with the burrito when I finally found a shrimp, so this was pretty disappointing as I was eating throughout my meal since I started on the steak side. Another thing was we ordered a little Chipotle sauce on the side. Since when do people charge for a little sauce on the side? $1.30 for it. Heck in most Mexican joints, the sauces are all out free for the taking, so this threw me off a bit but not a biggy, hence 4 stars. If I am ever in the area I WILL be coming back because this place is great and the food was beyond delicious. :). Try it! read more

This place overall is ok nothing special. We drove hear based on the reviews and it was a let down. - Carne asada tacos were Cold and had no flavor at all. The tortilla was covered in grease, not sure why. The beans and rice were fine. The horchata had a strange flavor. I have had better tacos at a taco stand. The server was little out of it, overall not a welcoming friendly atmosphere. The worst was the hostesses. As we left 3 of them were sitting on the floor in the entrance just chatting like they were at home, not at work. They don't greet or acknowledge you. We were in town and saw this place on the way to an event and made a mental note to have lunch on the way back. Good decision! As many other reviews have mentioned you have to tell your server if you want corn tortilla chips with your salsa. Didn't know so we were brought flour chips which were fine but I definitely prefer corn. Our server also let my wife know that the iced tea is premixed and comes "our of the gun" at the bar so she opted for diet Coke. (Gotta be brewed tea, right?) My niece ordered the fajitas with steak, my wife got the half order of nachos and I got the tostada bowl with shredded beef. Everyone raved about how good everything tasted! It was very busy on a Saturday at noon and it took a while for drink refills and the check but we were enjoying the food SO MUCH we didn't really mind. Came to the place on a whim. Checked it through Yelp and was happy to see it had good reviews. Clean inside, attentive staff, nice decor. I keep going on about the chips and salsa but, damn, they are so good! Makes you feel so welcome. My order is the rolled tacos...if they pass it's all good. The number one place to go to in Fallbrook! The chipotle quesadilla is delicious!! And the chips are so incredibly good. They make them here and are so fresh and tasteful. I highly recommend this place to anyone that visits Camp Pendleton or the area. Oh and the town also has an avocado festival every year!!! Note: not vegan friendly. read more

This is the original Estrellas before they expanded, it was a hidden gem and now I'd say it's the best restaurant in town, and well recognized. It's family owned and run for the most part, I have a good friend that works at their bigger location and I went to high school with the youngest son who works here as well. It's just authentic Mexican food done right. The chips are housemade and usually still plenty warm when they get to the table, the flour tortilla chips are insanely delicious, and the salsa has a kick but wonderful and always super fresh. I recommend getting their carnitas, the owner prepares them and puts lots of time and love into them to get them to be that tender and flavorful. Went back again and had lunch My rating is the same, however this time I had a chile relleno which was probably the best chile relleno I've ever had. I ordered a 2 item combo with the relleno and a tamale. Unfortunately the tamale was basically inedible. The masa was very dry & rubbery. The pork inside was tough, underseasoned -to the point of bland & tasteless and dry as a bone. I wasn't able to chew it. I chewed and chewed and finally had to spit it out into my napkin!!! and I have some pretty good chompers. It was like the pork was flash cooked and a bit old instead of braised low and slow. Their refried beans are very good but, again, the spanish rice is dry and bland. The service was better this time than it was on our last visit. Estrella's is probably the best Mexican food in Fallbrook but if you go I recommend you skip the tamales. I've ordered two different kinds on different occasions (chicken and then pork) and both times the tamales were a zero. read more

Tonight we tried doing takeout since the kids are sick we wanted to get the carne asda nachos with all flower chips. ( I love the flower chips here keeps me going back for more and to support the local town.) I eat at this place about 3 to 5 times a month and always order the same food. The nachos the meat was burnt and had a sour taste to the meat. My kid ordered a cheese quesadilla and the cheese wasn't melted so placed in the microwave. Than I always order the fresh guacamole dip. Now the problem with this one when I eat in the store I have to take it to go and I order extra chips but looking at the take out the size is smaller and I know it's a take out cup but this one tasted with so much seasoning and I don't do spicy that this one was extra spicy and they never did this when we dine in. Today is the first time for 2018 and to pay something for your signature dip it wasn't there and maybe cause it's take out. I will try to give this place another try and dine in and will see how much guacamole dip they serve you vs take out see the photo for take out looks disappointed. read more
