It ranks high in prize money so it draws professional rodeo contestants from around the US. The events are very well organized and things move fast with little or no "dead" time. The Behind the Chutes tour is excellent but it sells out early so your best chance to to order tickets online in advance. My only criticism is that all the rodeo start times are 7:15 pm. This means that by the time the last event, bull riding, takes place it is too dark for photos and even before that the light fades so only the fastest cameras and lenses will capture good images. (When I attended, there had been rain showers just before the start and heavy cloud cover advanced the time of darkness.) Because the bleachers and arena are small, a 200mm lens is sufficient for most shots.

We finally made our way up to Estes last week and took a tour. I really wish that I could remember our guide's name but I just plain don't; he was an older gentleman who said he was an electrical engineer and worked with electronics. Really friendly guy, very excited to be talking about the hydroplant and the history of Estes Park. The tour is REALLY worth it but you gotta make sure to go when they're operating as they close down for the colder months. We has a blast and learned things we didn't know before. Our tour guide really knew his stuff and I already mentioned how friendly he was. The museum itself is really fun and you get to see stuff that you don't normally get to. I've told both my dad and sister to go check it out sometime and I expect we'll be making a tour again next year.

PRO: Location is well known, and hosts a variety of local events! CON: However, it's not close to Main street, so transportation is required. PRO: Large, open space - which allows for vendors, live music and guests to have plenty of room to maneuver to different booths! CON: The space felt a little crowded and continued to fill up throughout the event. Come early! PRO: About 25 wineries participated in the event - featuring wines from Colorado and California! CON: The sample sizes are thimble size, not allowing guests to have the best taste. PRO: The booths were organized by wine, then featuring a great chocolate pairing! CON: Booths were jam packed with people - making it hard to move! PRO: Staff is ultra friendly! CON: This event was SEVERELY understaffed, as many booths just had 2 people working - leaving us waiting in line for a good 30+ minutes to sample! PRO: A FREE shuttle is offered for events, has various pick up and drop off's around town! CON: There is only one shuttle for events, and with all the stops to make, the shuttle takes about 30-35 minutes to arrive. There are no set times, and not exactly on the half hour. PRO: Tickets can be found through Groupon, for a discounted price - which we gladly took advantage of! CON: Tickets are normally $40/person or $70/couple. After all is said and done, I'm not sure I'd return for an event like this. I left everything was disorganized, understaffed and left little to be desired. #sorry

What happened???? The only good thing about the festival…read morethis year was the music. I loved the bands that I got to hear. I have been going to this festival for 25 years or more. I've seen it grow and become one of the highlights of fall. I have not been since COVID. Wow. What happened? I really hate leaving critical reviews, but had to in the hopes that person(s) who are organizing this event will read this and make some improvements. While I realize that inflation is terrible now, the cost of food was insane. Some other reviewer mentioned that the cost for a booth this year was around $200. Overall, they didn't have much to offer this year. We went on a Sunday which is often less busy, but it felt like the Arapahoe County Fair. There were only a few Scottish themed food items and rest were typical carnival food. There wasn't a vendor selling Guinness or cider. They had some craft beer, mead, and wine in a can. There was one small food truck selling scotch eggs and another selling cottage pies. Each of these vendors had very long lines. There were a few vendors selling fish and chips. Several turkey leg vendors. There were only one-two people working at each booth. The admission fee was strange. The website said purchasing tickets online would save money. It was $35 at the door and $40 if you purchased it online plus a $5 convenience fee. That made no sense. That is higher rather than lower. I purchased two tickets online anyway and only got one. I emailed them and they emailed me my tickets. A few people mentioned that whomever organized the Festival needed to find a better vendor for selling tickets online. I would agree. Their website needs to be updated. Schedules of events were unclear. There was no information about parking and when we arrived, there were no signs indicating where we should park. There was a janky little machine that you could pay for parking through that. When got there, there was no program or one printed map and schedule on a sandwich board sign, so you could take a picture of. It was a map that looked like a 3rd grader did it with Minecraft and information on which tent to go to for the music. There were about half the number of pipe bands, competitive dancing, dogs of the British Isles, and agility dog shows. At the closing ceremony, there were only a handful of people in the bleachers and maybe 3 bands. It was so sad to see it decline like this. Just overall, it seemed like no thought or attention was given towards anything and it was like they thought the festival was going to run itself. I don't know how the festival is supposed to be run -- is it all volunteers?

For all my apparently inadequate museum pandering and planetarium viewings, I haven't learned so…read moremuch about astronomy as I did in two hours with Mike at the Estes Park Memorial Observatory. This former Lockheed Martin mechanical engineer (who worked on the heat shield of a Mars rover) was as knowledgeable as he was delightful. He deftly and pleasantly answered a question from a child (from left field) about the aurora borealis, and patiently guided children to the right answers. This dear elder is the grandpa we all wish we had. His children passed away in a motor accident and the observatory was built in their memory. The viewing is booked over the phone, but check their website for openings. Mike attentively checked the weather and texted updates up until an hour before the viewing. The evening starts off with awe-inspiring videos. Mike then leads us through an educational demonstration of the Earth's horizon/sun/astronomy relationships on a model. This is translated to the wall, where the demonstration is laid out in 2D and we follow the sun's trajectory around the Earth's equator, so to speak. The presentation is interactive and charming, and Mike is truly a gem, full of wisdom and wise-cracks. The last part of the night brings us to the dome where he explains the technology and directs the telescope to various sights. Depending on the time of the year, a litany of constellations are visible (not blocked by the sun or a full moon). In May/June, our party viewed Mars, the horse and rider, a nebula, and an exploding star through the telescope, and a few constellations with the naked eye. The viewing is free, personable, and a wholesome and wonderful way to spend your evenings. The observatory is donation funded, at https://www.angelsabove.org/donate/. Throughout those years, I'm still amazed at things that she said, that have, and are still going on. She instructed me back then, to always be aware of what was going on around me, if and when I saw a "White Feather". Just last night (11/6/19) I found a pure white, beautiful feather on my bed-sheet. My thoughts went directly to her, as they have many times. So MUCH is going on ... She never misses a beat. She is intuitive beyond any 'mortal realm'. I hope to go back up someday very soon. No doubt about it ... she is gifted, beyond words. Still thanking her, and she's never left my thoughts and prayers!

We explained that we were not at all making fun of her, and told her what I had said. She snapped back, "Well you have to be 18 for me to give you a reading" and I replied, "Okay I am 18" and she then told me "okay, Well I'm still going to card you". All of this was so inappropriate, uncalled for, and rude. I hope the Stanley can find someone to replace her, someone who hopefully won't attack their guests.
