Mathnasium staff have been engaging, helpful and non-judgmental and she feels really comfortable there. They have a great system to incentivize the kids so they look forward to going and being able to win prizes and complete their master checks. I also really appreciate the ease of the online appointment system and the option to have at least 1 weekend day for sessions. The tutors are super friendly and make the kids feel welcome- they give regular prizes which get the kids excited about finishing their worksheets. For parents- The owner has made this after school activity super convenient for parents! I signed up for 3 hours of tutoring per week, we can come in anytime during their business hours for our slots, no need to adhere to a strict day/time and if you take a vacation, your hours will roll over and you won't lose them. Both of us have been quite happy with the tutors and staff at Alpha. Academically, my son has raised his gpa, test scores and equally important, learned the subject matter. The tutors understand how to work with teenagers and my son feels more confident in the subject areas after his tutoring sessions. Lastly, their rates are reasonable and hours are flexible to suit the needs of students. We've been to other tutoring centers in Berkeley and El Cerrito, but none of them has produced as great a result as Alpha.

I worked with Jennifer, who was absolutely wonderful, and she managed to help me write my college apps that got me into top universities like UC Berkeley, Northeastern, and UCLA. With this, I also got scholarships from other universities I applied to and had an overall amazing college application experience. She helped me facilitate and better explain my ideas on paper which helped a lot. Also, before the SATs got cancelled, I used the Alpha College Prep to mainly help with the math portion of the SAT and after the first session my score improved by 50 points. I would recommend Alpha College Prep for students who are looking for some guidance during the college admission process or looking for overall tutoring in any area. He is a bright guy and has always done fine in school, but never liked reading, and spelling is not his thing. We were assured by well-meaning teachers that his challenges would disappear with time. The first two years of high school were miserable for him, and I had to drag him out of bed every morning to get there. He worked hard, but his grades steadily declined until he pretty much gave up putting any effort into his assignments if he did them at all. The last straw was when he confided to me sadly that he no longer felt smart at all. Ugh. So, long story slightly less long, we had him tested and discovered that he is dyslexic. Of course, this information made his teachers' suggestions that he work HARDER, rather than DIFFERENTLY even more frustrating. We discovered sadly that his school was unable and/or unwilling to help him out. The silver lining for us was sending him to Tilden for his junior and senior years. What a Godsend they are there! After two years at Tilden, our son is graduating with the knowledge that he is capable, intelligent, and has learned how to learn in a way that works for him. He's excited to attend college next year with renewed confidence. Tilden is pricey, but for us, it was well worth it. The teachers and Sallie, the head of the school, were committed, encouraging, and engaging. What relief to see our boy back on track and excited for his future!

For example, Tilden offers Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra. While such courses are offered at a community college, having the option to learn 1:1 is critical in giving a student a more solid foundation before entering a 4-year college. At the same time, the rates make more sense than Fusion Academy, which is on a trimester system and 30% more. Tilden is run like a school rather than a corporation. It's more pure to its cause. Summer is not the easiest time of year to convince your kids to start Kumon - but thanks to Phil's…read morepatience and encouragement my 2 children actually enjoy going there twice/week. The program is about routine and repetition (which can be a challenge for young children with lots of energy). Phil is acutely aware of the need to respond to each of his student's needs and will adjust the pace accordingly. We really admire his attention to the individual and his thoughtfulness. I highly, highly recommend Kumon in Albany to anyone looking to supplement their education in a supportive environment.
