After about an hour, it started to get a bit busier with 3 other tables. The service was pretty good, and the restaurant and bathrooms were clean. We were given their regular menu and also the menu of the day. Unfortunately they did not have a lunch menu. The menu of the day was in Portuguese only, so the waiter patiently translated and described each of the dishes. We ended up ordering both mains from the menu of the day and the appetizer from their regular menu. The baked cheese seemed like it could be something I could make at home. It was various cheeses melted together with oregano that came with crispy crostini bread. The lamb chops were simply grilled with garlic and came with a side of homemade chips, vegetables and potatoes. We got 7 pieces total: 3 individual rack pieces and 4 chops. Honestly the taste was very mid with not much char. The pork and clam dish was probably the best dish of the 3. It came with a decent portion of black pork chunks that were mostly tender and not chewy, and a lot of clams. It was topped with fried potatoes, kind of like the ones you'd get at brunch. There was a lot of flavourful sauce at the bottom so it would have been nice to have more potatoes. I felt like for a Michelin bib gourmand restaurant, it would have been better, but overall I was not that impressed. For 2 people, 1 bottle of water, 1 appetizer, and 2 mains came to 47€. Everything was just okay. I don't think I would come again or recommend to others. I had much better Portuguese food on my trip here.

The wines and small bites we had were delicious, I loved their full body, dry red wine very tasty, This winery had a lot of awards and wine tasting in Portugal is inexpensive, a tour plus wine tasting can cost between 3-10 euros. Beautiful property, if you have a time go an visit this place.

The hotels are decent, the locals are friendly and the sights are consuming enough for a day or two (Roman ruins, chapel of bones etc) Couched in this one night stay are an impressive array of local-sourced restaurants. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer to try more. Cartuxa Enoteca is one of several I had on my list to try and it did not disappoint. We ordered: Mushroom, sheeps milk cheese and mint gratin - outstanding! Sautéed squid, chilli, lemon and rosemary - great Sliced beef tongue- I didn't eat it but others at my table loved it! Fries in olive oil - good (I had the audacity to ask for mayo in a place that I believe make their own oil - they politely declined and said "no sauces - only olive oil taste") A couple of diff glasses of their reserve red - both were delicious The olive oil pudding - an absolute must try. I left extremely satisfied.

A glowing fire of charcoal was burning in a small wheel barrow by the front door. The lights flickered back on as I stepped inside to see a small dining room, already full. In my broken Portuguese/Spanish, I asked if they served food, they nodded yes as the rest of my party walked through the door. I said, "Ok, donje?" The unhappy waitress barely nodded her head toward the stairs and we ventured into an empty dining room set with white table clothes. One long table was set for 20 with tapas already in place. We settled into the other table and struggled through the one menu they gave us. Soon, the other table started to fill and we learned it was a party for the workers from another restaurant in town (good sign). One of the workers came to help us translate and we ended up with one of the best meals we have had since in Portuglal. The pitcher of white wine was $5 and excellent and smooth. The grilled pork was mouth watering... the french fries and salad was what was to be expected. Still, a very pleasant surprise and excellent meal experience. Authentic counts here.
