One of the most magical places I have set my foot on, twice so far, so it is time I also write an…read moreode to it. Its fame is not only based on the incredible food, but the whole property around the restaurant - including the old stalls transformed into guestrooms of most amazing design, and the picturesque region where it is situated (still need to try out the barefoot walk!), and the modernized but antique setting on one hand, and welcoming and friendly hosts on the other - have got all the potential to blow your mind. There is this huge sign "Griaß Di" next to the road, and that is really what they mean here. From the moment you enter, you feel welcome and comfortable, and no one is trying to judge whether you also parked something very expensive outside. I mean - with an average total of around 50-60 eur per person for a normal dinner - appetizer, dessert and a couple of glasses of something included, this is not the most posh restaurant one can think of, but still, compared to some other places of its kind, their warm and open and not full-of-oneself approach is a refreshing experience every time. On the other hand, the price is really reasonable - for the overall experience they provide here, and in comparison again, they are in fact nice to your wallet indeed. Already the first time I went, I wanted to take a photo of every detail. The plates were the most beautiful I had set my eyes on, and in that setting, I thought they also must be extremely old. Then it turned out I can buy them too, since they are made by some local pottery. That is a lucky circumstance indeed - you can buy all the plates and some of the local products they use at the restaurant and take with you. But what impressed me most from the very first moment was the extremely successful combination of old and new, in every area, starting with the design of that Griaß Di sign. Taking a selfie in the toilet made sense for the first time too. Second time I went, I was a bit less delighted with my food than with all the rest, but it didn't affect my overall opinion of this heaven on earth. It was still the finest food, and I can't claim I know how the Kürbiscremesuppe really should be. Maybe I like how I cook it most because it is spiced with chili rather than salt. But on this culinary level, I only suppose the fine difference you must make to normal great-tasting food can also involve that the soup goes in the direction of some very fine salty sauce for a bit, whether I like it or not. Also, just an impression of mine was that the Gansl roast, even though with the crispiest skin that there is in the world, was a bit too "brav" - I would normally prefer it a bit greasier ("wenn schon - denn schon"), though having it so "mager" must probably be the best way to have it. (Ok, that must be the most carefully stated critical opinion ever.) However, I got a bit bored with chewing soon, and the others finished it off. The way food is served is a chapter for itself. Every time, some of the traditionally but quite stylishly dressed members of staff (I had no idea how well long dreadlocks match with a Dirndl) will come to your table carrying e.g. an authentic rustic old pot out of which they pour the soup, explaining what is what if need may be, but they also don't mind bringing the whole grating mill and doing the final dessert preparation in front of you. I could go on and on about Steirereck am Pogusch, but to cut my ode short, if anywhere near Austria, you simply don't want to miss this ultimate highlight that came straight out of a fairy tale.

We went on a Thursday, "slaughter day", and were met with a T-Bone steak the size of Texas and a menu filled with "inner delights". It's not my thing, so I went for the potato soup and shared the duck with my husband. He thoroughly enjoyed the beef tartar as well. The themed menu is a plus and we also enjoyed the "blood" sekt (isabella/concord grape juice) apertif. For dessert I devoured the grilled pears with an eierlikoer frappe and my husband tried the "blood" strudel. Excellent! And I am not sure why people complain about the price. It was actually really reasonable concerning the quality of the food and service and the unique setting. Four people, all having at least two drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts, was only 150 EUR. We had a coupon for 200 EUR and tried our hardest to spend it!! We will definitely put the rest towards our next visit. Tip: try not to book on a holiday or weekend. Weekdays are easy to book and we had no problem calling just a few days ahead of time. Don't email though, you probably won't get a response.

This is normal, which is why we were given a tip to stay an evening at the Gasthaus when we went for a weekend trip to Reichenau. Unfortunately the place was booked out for that weekend and even for one specific weekend in June. It's very popular, so reserve ahead of time. We still found elsewhere to stay near town but still decided to come one evening for dinner. Falstaff 2 forks and 86 points. Ratings seemed to point they were good but another tip to us was they do specialities for the season and take importance in the quality of their food. The food was wonderful and I have to admit this was one of the best lamb dishes I ever had in Austria. I have high expectations when it comes to dishes serving lamb. We got as dessert a variation of what they have and that's perfect. You have no room left in you, it's k. Just order the dessert variation set. Trust me it will be worth all bloating and complaining. This kitchen has some gems stored in their sleeves. Food outstanding! The location and view. Austria is filled with Gasthauses that are situated in places with views that make you say "I'm quitting my job, moving here and eating & drinking for the rest of my life." This is a place like that. View of mountains spectacular and even though we got it at a rainy and cloudy day it was incredible when the sun broke out a couple times. You have tables on balcony, at back if you want more forest and less view or you have these couple benches as in northern Germany so that you can have some privacy with your better half. It's a 1 hour drive from Vienna (would require a lot of walking from train station). Call and reserve room or table before just going there. Staff is wonderful and helpful. If any of you new comers in Vienna are wondering where can I take my friends or family and give a taste of the mountains food and drinks, keep this place in mind.

Wienerschnitzel - excellent and spectacular are the words that come to mind. There is only one place (Zum Schwarzen Kameel) that comes close to serving a schnitzel as good as this. Tender, melts in your mouth, perfectly seasoned and pan fried in butter. Wow! Salad - mixed with fried goat cheese and appropriately dressed. Also superb! Burger - not an Austrian thing, so I'm excluding it from the rating score. The quality of the ingredients is definitely there, but the meat consistency is not what it should be and the oversized bun doesn't help. Condiments - home made! Great! The service is also excellent, possibly better than in most restaurants in the entire country. I'm coming back!

They offer guests what they call a "Halbpension", by which they mean full breakfast and dinner, but also serve a light lunch composed of salad and soup, as well as an afternoon cake. For the main course you always get to choose between the fish of the day, vegetarian, a gourmet version of a local recipe or something more traditional.
