I had pterygion in both eyes for at least 30 years, which is a long time to deal with it but I got used to it and to the almost constant pain! I was too terrified of surgery to get them removed. A month ago my ophthalmologist said: "they are growing and you should consider surgery". I made a first appointment with his recommended specialist it was in 7 weeks. Not wanting to wait, a week later we found Dr. Michel on line and called on a Wednesday. First impression: I had a kind person on the phone and I was NEVER put on hold or dismissed!!! And I got a first appointment for the following Wednesday! Only a week! Wow! It is a 3 1/2 hour drive to Oxnard from here but it seemed worth it. The day before I get a call from the super kind and responsive office to confirm and asking: will your visit be in person or on the phone. Well, I didn't even know I had the option! So I emailed the photos of my eyes and Dr Michel called me exactly at the scheduled time and went over the options right away. Clear, detailed and caring and kinder than I had ever been treated by a health professional. It turned out my insurance didn't cover everything, but at this point I was convinced I wouldn't let anyone else take care of my eyes so I agreed to have the procedure done ... IN A WEEK! I was terrified and panicking, the anxiety level was ridiculously high but I managed to get there the next Wednesday and Thursday at 9 am we were at their office and met this incredibly caring , patient and professional crew and finally, Dr Michel in person. I was nervous but their care, as if I was the most important person on Earth, helped tremendously. I was having the procedure first on my left eye, where the pterygion had been the most significant, invasive and painful. Honestly, preoccupation is a waste of energy with this clinic! We went back to the hotel to sleep the rest of the day and night. Amazingly, without any fear or anxiety he repeated the process the next day on my right eye. Right after the procedure we went to a delicious restaurant and when the waitress saw my covered eye she asked what happened and I explained. Her words after she found out she knows of him: "Oh, he's an amazing doctor, my mother had that surgery done by him like 12 years ago!" After great food we drove back home, with Dr. Michel's phone number in hand, just in case... Here's the thing: a doctor that isn't afraid to give his patients his phone number and actually answers or replies to texts at anytime is a doctor who knows his specialty and is passionate about his patients and his work. You don't get that every day.

I was informed of Dr. Michel's ptergium surgery ability 12 years ago by my optometrist, Dr. Griffith, in the Target optical dept. in Newbury Park, CA. He initially found my ptergium growth. He gave me Dr. Michel's card and I held on to it all this time. I'm sure glad I did! Dr. Michel is caring, concerned and a clear communicator. His right-arm tech, Naomi, is fantastic with communication and follow through on call backs and providing valuable information pre AND post op! My surgery experience could not have been better. He was polite, to the point kind of Doctor. He was not warm in nature rather a matter of fact kind of Doctor. He is a specialist and a good one. He tells you what he thinks and gives you options and explains the options to you so you can choose for yourself. He is a good Doctor. His office is very clean. They keep cleaning everything you put your head up to as soon as the test is over with. They have an optical center and many other offices through out Southern California. They have glasses and prescription sunglasses. They even sell Gucci sunglasses. They have a wonderful asset at their office and her name is Lisa! My gosh she is warm hearted and so so funny. Quick witted as well and a smile so wide. She explains everything and is so very knowledgeable. If you go in nervous you come out laughing and happy and relaxed. It is a rare gift for someone that has a personality like Lisa. I had a great experience!

She is so nice and greets you with a genuine smile. I am disabled and Cindy made accommodations for me. During the test, Cindy made sure I was comfortable and checked on me to see if I was doing okay. Cindy treated me with dignity and respect. We were on the assumption that anesthesia was going to be general and found out during the surgery when my wife felt (pain) the needles on her eye. 2. She was told about staying looking down certain period for around 4 days after the surgery while the day after was told it could be weeks. 3. On the visit the day after the surgery when she got the patch removed she almost started crying because she could not see, then was told that was normal and it could take weeks, she should have been warned. 4. When seeing a different doctor the day after the surgery, little was explain other than "it looks normal", when my wife tried to ask about her concerns he seemed like on a rush to leave and left the assistant to answer. 5. She got paper listing two prescriptions for before and two after, we were told that not need to use the ointment and just use the two prescribed for before and one prescribed for after, I questioned "but the ointment is an antibiotic" and the assistant just responded that it was just if want it use at night to feel better. 6. I did my own search and found out that one prescription for before is an antibiotic same as the ointment, I assume that is the reason why the ointment is not needed. Throughout my research I found the vision issues for after the surgery so I was able to calm my wife, although I am not a doctor. In addition, I found there are two types of gas a fast acting and a long acting which I do not know what was used. I just hope the end result is as expected and faster than the unknown.

But now 20 years later and both Dr Shapiro and his assistant Stacey have been absolutely remarkable and responsive. I'm having Vision issues and thought who's going to provide me with the best referral of who to see. Provided with the name of top ophthalmologist Dr Lee Wan in Oxnard who is absolutely amazing and really listen to my concern even though he initially thought everything looked good. Stacy called from Dr Shapiro's office a few different times saying they were concerned and just wanted to follow up that I had pursued additional appointments and was drilling down on my vision issues. The concern was absolutely amazing since I haven't been there in 20 plus years. I've never experienced anything like it. Without revealing too much Medical I would not be as far along seeing specialist after specialist, down to UCLA Stein Eye Institute Etc without their recommendations and guidance as I've seen so many specialists here in Ventura Thank you Stacey and Dr Shapiro for stressing the importance of Immediate Care and drilling down to get to the root cause. It's been a hell of a journey and I'm not done.

My second appt was at 10:15am. In spite of the waiting room being much less crowded, I had still not been called after 20 minutes and when I spoke to the front desk, I was told it would probably be another 30 minutes. It's obvious that Dr. Garg does not value the time or stress level of his patients, with overbooking being his regular practice. I cannot recommend this doctor.

At 11:15 am, with us still sitting in the waiting room, I went up and asked what the problem was and would they be taking her soon? They were totally dismissive of me and everyone in the waiting room but really cordial to everyone on the phone. My boss summed it up when she said, "it's a conveyor belt business, the more you shove in, the more profit." Totally unprofessional and inconsiderate. If you're going to make patients wait over an hour and a half for an appointment, at least give them updates along the way and be apologetic. Nothing from them. Would not recommend to anyone.
