My particular review is for another matter that I was requested to get advise from a tax specialist. Now that the "fun" part is done with the purchase of D and I's new home, part of my new fun is selling my existing home. To do so there are various fixes that need to be done to make it market ready. I don't have a lot of extra cash but hoped to sell some shares from a Roth I've been contributing to for well over a decade to help pay some of those costs. My mutual fund company is being extra cautious in selling the shares I requested. In a nutshell I can take back money I've contributed (assuming I've contributed for at least 5 years) but not money that was earned. On that end they sent me a list of all my transactions over the decade or so that I've contributed and suggested I talk to a tax specialist and seek their opinion as far as what I can sell. That's where Lafata comes in. I figured I would likely need a tax service in 2017 to help me file both a non-resident Illinois tax form (since for the time being I will continue to work at my company in IL) and a part-year resident Indiana tax form, so why not try to establish a relationship with a specialist now. I called them on the 12th and the receptionist was polite and transferred me to a tax specialist. But the tax specialist was confused on what and why I needed their help. I explained the best I could and finally he asked for my phone number and said he would call back later in the evening since he was currently busy with other customers. That's totally understandable since it is "tax season" now. But as of the 18th no call. The least he could've done was schedule an appointment for me to come over so I could show and explain my situation more clearly. I contacted another tax service and they were just as confused by my request but they did schedule a time for me to stop by and present my information. I have doubts about the other service as well but will reserve judgment for after my appointment.

I wound up speaking over the phone to a lady named Del who is the main proprietor of LTS. She wasn't sure at first why I needed her help but she did schedule a time for me to go to LTS to discuss my issue. The appointment time was at 12:30 PM on a Tuesday. The main assistant presented me with a form to fill out stating my reason for visiting. I saw Del working with another customer and there was another person waiting inside. So by the time Del came to me, it was almost 1PM. I presented my info and she asked pertinent questions about my situation to get a better understanding. After a minute she finally understood and explained the tax and penalty implications of what would happen if I would sell the shares and gave some advice on best approach. She also gave a brief career history at the end. Overall the service was A-OK and helped me in making a decision on my situation. I would likely look to use her next year for my taxes if I'm not able to figure out all the forms needed to file both IL and IN state tax forms.

The following year they used the wrong numbers from the W2 resulting in a return $3,500 less than it should have been. We found their mistakes both times. We had to have another tax preparer take a look because we knew something was wrong. They offered a very quick and insincere 'sorry.' When we asked for a refund of the costs we paid or a discount the best they could do was offer a credit for next tax season. Like I'd ever let them touch my taxes again!
