This is another church we have driven by for years and last Saturday we toured as part of Doors Open Baltimore. We were given a very informative tour by David, a church volunteer. He made the church come alive for us. Emmanuel Episcopal Church, built in 1854, hosts a wealth of beautiful artworks that demonstrate the old glory of the church in its historic Baltimore neighborhood. It was founded in 1854. It was designed by Niernsee & Nielson; the original building was in the Italianate style with a Tuscan bell tower and rubble masonry. Today, only the exterior walls and lancet windows are left of the original design as the church has been extensively renovated over the years. We were delighted again to see Louis Comfort Tiffany's 3 stained glass windows in the main church along with a magnificent John La Farge window. David took us to see the small chapel in the lower level. This small chapel was so peaceful and quiet and also had a Tiffany window. There is an extraordinary sculpture in the side chapel done by Daniel Chester. It is called The Newcomer Memorial Font, and it shows a graceful marble angel kneeling over the baptismal basin. It is truly lovely! read more
