My perspective: Emily was our doula for our (breech) home birth. I also had 3 massages with her prior to labor. I have no words to explain how wonderful Emily was or how much she improved our birth experience. She was always available prior to the birth by phone or text and our in person meetings with her felt relaxed and added to my excitement. On the day of our baby's birth she kept in touch and then came over as soon as I said maybe I wanted her. Prior to and during labor her massage skills were amazing and her voice through contractions kept me calm. She even gave my husband a massage to calm him a bit. Our home birth was everything we hoped it could be and I credit a lot of that to Emily. It is hard for me to find the right words to exactly describe how amazing and gifted Emily is so I will share the email I wrote to Emily when my husband and I were still glowing from the experience. I hope she won't mind! "Emily, Chris and I are still on a high from how absolutely incredible and perfect we view Dahlia's birth. We feel so lucky that things went exactly as we envisioned. That seems to be a rare outcome these days and we are truly blessed. Seeing your doula skills in action made me realize that some people truly do have a calling. I saw an article today titled something like, reasons you don't need a doula and I just laughed. There is no way I could have had the birth experience I had without you. I think we need to discuss you canceling this silly move to OK." When we met for my postpartum visit I talked to Emily about flying her up to NYC for subsequent births. I think it says a lot that with all of the talented doulas in NYC, I don't want to mess with success and really need Emily by my side. NYC has suffered a great loss with Emily's move to OK. My husband's input: Emily just gets pregnant women and knew exactly what my wife needed during labor probably better than my wife knew - counter pressure, massage and encouragement. She even rubbed my neck when the stress was getting to me and made it easier for me to get in a nap. I don't even want to think what the experience would have been like without Emily. Sometimes being pregnant is less than relaxing. Your hips, back, everything hurts. This is the place to go for an hour of heaven and to feel almost normal again! Emily is wonderful at her job. Emily's massage is luscious. Her precise and gentle but firm approach is ideal for a relaxing and extremely effective massage. I have had many sessions with Emily and each time is as consistently great (if not better) than the last. She is always thorough and attentive to my complaints and concerns. Emily was instrumental in our successful home birth. She provided my wife and I with the support and care we needed throughout the process, and was very in tune with us. Emily provided my wife with invaluable emotional support, physical support (massage, providing pressure to my wife's sacrum during contractions to relieve pain, trading off tasks seamlessly with myself so that we could stay fresh, etc.), and helped us stay nourished throughout the labor. She was on time and very knowledgable during visits before and after the birth, and always attentive and fully available for emotional / physical support during labor. I would describe her as highly intuitive, intelligent, kind, strong, and caring. Having a great birth team is so important for a positive birth experience, and Emily was an ideal fit for us. We had Emily as our Duola for our 3rd baby, it was the best experience I ever had in giving birth. I can't explain enough in words our happy I am to have Emily. Emily was our doula 4 weeks ago in Tulsa OKLAHOMA. I found her from a site like this. When I read her profile and reviews I KNEW she was going to be amazing... I just didn't know HOW AMAZING! A few things that really drew me in from her profile is she is the ONLY doula that mentions counter pressure (added bonus was her massage training and experience). I had a tiny bit of experience with getting counter pressure with the birth of my second child and found it amazing that during my strongest contractions, I couldn't feel them. (I think counter pressure is the biggest secret out there!) I met with Emily and she was fabulous. I had sent her my previous birth experiences with each of my 3 kids. After meeting with her, my anxiety levels about this birth were greatly diminished. I knew she'd be there for me. I had a super traumatic experience with my 3rd, so this was very important to me. From there we met a second time with my husband. She was very impressive. After that, I would communicate with her after each dr. Appt. She was very helpful with concerns and problems I had. When it was time to have our baby, we communicated back and forth. She is so knowledgeable and was always there with the right questions and suggestions for us during the entire process. She met us at the hospital. During labor, my doctor wasn't impressed with my progression and was about to send me home. Emily helped with some exercises and within the hour we had showed enough progression to stay. However, my dr. still wasn't impressed that baby girl hadn't engaged yet and said we could only have so much patience before we needed to do a cesarean. We had an hour. We went to work. We did at least 4 different positions and I was amazed with each one there is counter pressure! It takes the edge of the contraction completely to make it bearable. There were a few contractions - 1 where I was in the bathroom and 1 where she was in the bathroom- and I was dying without her!! It is night and day difference getting thru each big contraction. She can tell when each one is coming on and she's on it! My husband described in his birth story that with her I was in "labor heaven" There was one position/exercise in particular that she had me do that I could tell was what moved baby down into position! Things really went fast from here. Baby started crowning with no dr. In the room and I still hadn't had my epidural. Emily was so encouraging and told me that if I didHn't get an epidural, that I could do it. She helped me stay calm, relax, and focus. Emily was there when nobody else was there. She stayed calm. My husband called in the hall for help and lots of nurses ran in and helped with the delivery. A paragraph from my birth story.. "She was out! I couldn't believe it! They ask Austin to cut the umbilical cord. I ask a few times "is she ok?" I never shared this concern with Emily but she sensed that this was a concern of mine. She came over and assured me that she was good! This meant so much to me. They placed her on my chest and my heart has NEVER BEEN FULLER!!! It was the most amazing moment in my life. .. I looked at Emily and without saying anything I think we understood each other. WE DID IT! And I couldn't have done it without her. My experience without her would have been hell. Instead, it was the best day of my life. She was there for me, took away the majority of the main, and helped me every step of the way. She helped me get Karly here safely and that means the world to me." From my husbands journal, " around this time, Emily said goodbye. It was a very tender moment. Koni was crying tears of gratitude and joy. .. It was very sweet and I sent Emily off with a hug. She was amazing, and we are very grateful to have her be part of Karly's birth. Jess K.
