I had an Orthopedic appointment this morning with Dustin Hoffman, but sadly my efforts to obtain gel injections fell short. I injured my knees several years ago and was diagnosed with bi-lateral chondromalacia of the patella resulting in painful giving way, sharp stabbing pain, extreme pain when extending the knees, and constant throbbing. After visiting my PCP, the week prior I was offered to receive steroid injections from my primary care provider in her office without any additional x-rays or MRIs, but I declined due to the correlation between steroids and opacification of the optic lenses. However, she provided a referral to a Dustin Hoffman who works at Emergeortho of Wilmington. In doing so, the scheduler called and I advised her that my PCP has the MRI summary for both knees and they should ask for said summaries to be forwarded in order to provide a clear picture of my condition, but due to the incredulity of the situation the office didn't request the MRI summary from my PCP resulting with Dustin Hoffman insisting on billing my insurance company for an X-ray even though by his own omission agreed that more times than not the x-ray image will show normal. I find this sort of mentality to be border line spurious and mendacious in nature. In addition, during my brief interaction with Dustin Hoffman he did not ask one question concerning my knees. Didn't ask about the trauma, the fact they give out, the sharp pain, or the constant throbbing or why my PCP referred me to him. The only concern he had was to be able to bill my insurance for an x-ray that he and I both knew would indicate normal imaging and at no time did he suggest a new updated MRI, which I would have capitulated to. Healthcare at its best in the United States now awaydays!! Two thumbs down!! read more

I wasn't actually the patient here, but my friend Shawn Paul was. However, the front desk team greeted us warmly and invited him to come up quickly. The girl who checked him in was very pleasant and helpful. Also, the nurse who called him back was very friendly and fun. He said that he and the doctor had a very informative and insightful conversation and he was pleased with his care. we also didn't have to wait long before he was called back. His entire visit from registration to check out was only about 95 minutes. read more

Please note I have HAD two hips put in A Left first back in 2016 July which was great recovery ‍ time 2 weeks no problem. Birth defects of my hips. From OA genetics of course! My second hip was my Right hip in April of 2024 and that was a total shock & disaster. I am extremely glad I didn't have the surgery in Leland under the 'Bundle'. I did have the surgery at the Novant ' old cape fear orthopedic hospital' hospital' . My hemoglobin levels dropped significantly from 14.7 down to 8.7. I did sign on pre-op for blood to be on stand by and my blood type. Because I am a rare B+ type I found out right away after surgery that I was Not given blood when I went to my bed on the floor when I was staying the night. Yep staying the night I passed out sitting up on an angle when the nurses got me into my new bed in front of my daughter. Which was not good at all and when the doctors came in I ask my daughter and husband asked why didn't I receive my blood that I signed for because I have an anemia issue- especially after major surgeries. ( by the way the nurses & nurse rehab at cape fear orthopedic hospital are outstanding nurses in recovery ‍ & on the floor when they care for you. They are the best of the best. I never ever ever had no issues with none of them they treat you like gold and will help you and will get you or find you any snack possible for you especially in the middle of the night) My after care when I went home the hospital called but emerge ortho never called me when I got home to see if I was ok ? To see if I needed home care. Of when I was going to be able to have MORE rehab. They only scheduled me for 3 rehab sessions. That is it. I did my rehab at home 99.9% of it at home and with a personal/private health care provider. On a personal level: my husband is a patient of Dr Summerfield and Dr Scott Hannum. The day I was released from the hospital by Dr . Summerfield, my huband asked him why I wasn't given my blood when they knew I had this issue on my first surgery- losing so much blood during surgery. I lost three liters on my first operation and close to four on this one. (Note : I also have an oncologist for my 'iron' issues for this since 2016 to present! ) Bare with me I know this long Now I am getting to the real issues on hand It has taken me over two years to recover and heal. I still feel the 'hammering' on my knee for the placement for the femur. And I am a 1/2 inch because they placed a bigger 'HIP' joint then my left one . So this has off set my scoliosis now also. So I can't walk straight I hurt all the time I feel the hammer in my knee & hip constantly My right leg has the jitters My Discoid lupus has been a constant flare since my surgery. I'm out of breath since surgery I have no energy or endurance. (Like I did before the surgery I was walking 10k steps or more a day) I was told this surgery was less than an hour where my first surgery took a tad longer and some materials were NOT used also. Such as gel foam to stop bleeding for packing and a few other things to stop excess bleeding. I have NOT been back to normalizing since nor been able to go back to work. Takes me a very long time to do normal 'house' chores or and yard cleanup etc.. Be extremely cautious & careful about your orthopedic surgeon! I found out later bc of my blood issues I would have been a prime example to have this surgery at Duke or Chapel Hill because they deal with 'specific conditions and patients like this and you can stay in the hospital longer and recovery time is longer with your doctor and insurance company. They make you the priority and your condition(s) . Where most doctors don't put patients care first it's about the green that lines the wallets. I have a few autoimmune issues plus the iron deficiency, birth defects and very bad Oa/Ra and psoriatic arthritis. Genetics of bad arthritis. I'm 58 today ! Good luck y'all's read more

The last thing I wanted was carpal tunnel release surgery or surgery of any kind. But, I could no longer paint with numb hands, it was getting ridiculous. I went in and saw a PA Amelia Lamb and she was so knowledgeable, efficient and clearly explained why I needed the surgery. I agreed after she answered all of my questions. I had my right wrist done last month by Dr Richard Moore and he did my left wrist a few weeks ago. I'm going in today to have stitches removed. My hands no longer go numb. It hurt more than I expected but didn't last long. My hand is rather weak but I'm doing the exercises to regain strength. Most importantly I can paint again. The office and staff are all friendly and cheerful. I'm 100% satisfied. read more

I took my son to the Emerge Ortho urgent care on Monday for extreme back pain (couldn't sleep for several days), after the appointment he was scheduled to see specialist on Thursday. On Tuesday, they called and canceled his appointment with the specialist and said he needed to see a different doctor and they would call me back to reschedule. That afternoon I called again and they tried to schedule him for a month and a half later but told me they would try to find something sooner and call me back. No one ever called back. On Thursday morning I called and was told they were still trying to find a doctor to see my son. The people there seem nice, seems like maybe a system problem with finding and scheduling appointments. My son continues to be in pain and is not sleeping well with no future appointment at Emerge Ortho. read more

The follow up and lack of concern for the patient is poor. 3 different occasions I was told I could get a call back and they confirmed my phone number each time and when I call back they say we tried to call yet there's no voicemail or missed call. Your doctor or nurse can't be bothered to get on the call instead you speak with a receptionist who has as much of a medical degree as you do as the caller. read more

This is for Dr Boyd. I showed up at 11:30 and you rushed me out rightfully so, but don't charge me 800 dollars and say I found nothing wrong on the xray. I ha e been hobbling for 3 months and now have to spend good money after bad to find a doctor who has the proper equipment. Do not go to this place unless you have absolutely no where else to go. Excellent care, the billing department really sucks. Terrible. I was billed $250 for a deductible. My insurance company says I don't have a deductible. When I call billing to resolve, the super rude lady says "you have to call your insurance and they'll explain it to you. There's deductibles and co-insurance and a lot of stuff they'll explain." I asked her what the cash price for an MRI is and was told "way more than the $161 you paid" "Hold on, I was billed $250." "Right, we hold that until your bills are paid." "So, what was i charged? A deductible" "No that's not what i'm saying. You were billed 161 for coinsurance that we took out of the deductible. So we OWE YOU $89" "Ok, so your first impulse is not tell customers to call someone else instead of explaining the full story?" "No, that's not it. I didn't look into it that deep. But you go ahead and have a nice day." Click. So, if I hadn't pushed, I would have a credit sitting there. Awful and her attitude was beyond bad. read more

Based on previous patient reviews, I tried for over a month to schedule an appointment with Dr. Moore. for a second opinion on possible carpal/pronator release surgery. I drove over 40 miles just after Memorial Day to the Wilmington office to drop off my surgical records and medical evaluations. In about a week, I was first contacted by an employee to schedule a visit with a PA. I explained I wanted to see Dr. Moore directly for his professional evaluation/second opinion of my diagnosis. I then received a phone call two weeks later by an employee stating that Dr. Moore said I first needed to schedule an appointment with their pain management physicians on staff. I explained for the 3rd time that I was not in any pain and I wanted a second opinion for possible pronator/carpal release surgery. A few days later, I again received a call from a scheduler for the Pain Management Clinic stating that Dr. Moore will not see you for a second opinion and that I need to see someone for pain management. I said for the 4th time in 5 weeks, you must have me confused with some another patient -- I am not in any pain, I simply want a second opinion on carpal/pronator surgery. I ask the young lady to clarify that Dr. Moore will not see me just for a second opinion? She stated that is correct. Why would any professional medical practice ever refer a patient, who is not in pain, to a pain management specialist without at least first seeing the patient?? Hopefully other new patients will not waste their time with this medical group and questionable ethical practices. read more

I am new to the Wilmington area and needed an orthopedic doctor. I researched and found Dr. Rose, and called to make an appointment. I was told I needed to bring ALL 20yrs of records in and he would review them & decide if he would see me! That should have been the first red flag. It took about a month, then I called again to make an appointment. Well, I was scheduled with his PA Nate Montgomery. His exam was minimal. I had thoracic surgery @ Duke last Oct....he went to look at the scar & glanced at my shoulder. The second red flag, the scar was in the middle of my spine. He suggest PT at a different practice, when they offer PT-that was the 3rd RED FLAG. Got that corrected and I went in for PT, they said "you're here for your lumbar spine" umm NO!! PT caused flare-ups & she suggested I see a pain doctor within the practice. When I called I was told I needed a referral from Nate. After 4 weeks of waiting, I was told the referral was DENIED, and when I asked why "the pain doctor has nothing else to offer you" WHAT??? I wasn't even seen. Nate had suggested injections if PT didn't help. I have had 7 spine surgeries over 20 yrs-this place is a JOKE. Run! read more

My MRI appointment at Ashton Dr. was scheduled 2 weeks in advance for Saturday November 30th at 7:30am.  I conmpleted all required pre-checks and arrived at the facility at 7:15am as instructed.  I took the prescribed anxiety medication in advance of my MRI appointment.  When I arrived at the Ashton Dr location, the facility was closed.  I drove to the EmerOrtho location on Shipyard Blvd to see if they could explain what was going on.  The front desk receptionist was verty nice and very apologetic, but she did not know what happened with my appointment at Ashton Dr.  She went to the back office to inquire with the radiologist, and was infiormed that they had a full schedule at the Shipyard Blvd location and they would "try to fit me in". I explained that I am claustrophobic and I took the prescribed anxiety medication; I was concerend that the effect would wear off and unable to get the MRI.  They would not accomodate an expedited appointment, and I would have to wait until they could "fit me in". I asked to speak with a Manager and they handed me the business card of Stephanie Rackley, Radiology Manager to contact. I called Ms. Rackley and I got an out of office message.  I guess no management was on-site, scary at best! I was medicated for the appointment and.with the stress of the situation I felt sick and decided to go back home. This incident is beyond an inconvenient situation.  My shoulder pain is overwhelming and not having the scheduled MRI is delaying the diagnosis to fix my medical condition.  EmergeOrtho is unprofessional, negligent and has no regard for their patients.  I can't believe management is not aware of what goes on with facility operations or lack thereoff.  I have lost all trust and confidence with  EmergeOrtho to  provide the best care for me. I will seek other ortho providers that actually care and are able to provide services. read more

Provide care to patients. Dr Lu does not. He wants you to check his own boxes off and has never helped me personally over the last 12 months. I am in horrible pain. I was ambulatory when I started seeing him. He forced me through PT and other things and said insurance requires it. Insurance has since told me they didn't. I got worse after PT and I now drag my left leg. I'm unable to walk more than 20 ft. and I now need a wheel chair. Surgery was cancelled because emergency ortho did not file for insurance approval until a week before surgery date. I asked about approval and was told a few times that I was approved. This was not in fact true. Dr Lu Nurse is down right mean and an oager. I'm not exaggerating. She's never nice. Not once. She will tell you that she's not mean though when you ask her to stop yelling. She wouldn't give me a phone number or connect me to anyone above the oager. It was Jennifer and Jennifer only. She yelled at me to tell her what my complaints were and she would handle them. Ugh! So there are no resources for any concerned patients. The website says if it's not based on sex, race etc to complain at BBB . I kid you not. So I did. I wish there was a less than 1 star review. read more

Do not go near this place. It is a scam. After spending 25 minutes with with an administrator going over my medications, medical history and current pain, I saw a doctor for one minute. He said, "I see your back again." I was then sent for X-rays - lots of them in the same building. A week later, I was then sent for "therapy" where my neck was bent and made worse by a therapist who had never seen my X-rays. When I asked how she could be treating me when she had not seen the X-rays, she said they "weren't ready yet and it would take some time to get them!" So she was bending my neck not knowing what the problem was. And they set up multiple visits so they can keep charging my insurance. When I tried to see the X-rays myself, Emerge Ortho asked for a fee to see them. My insurance paid for them, but they want an extra fee for me to see them. Stay away! read more

I've been a patient of Emerge Ortho a long time and I've always been satisfied with the care I receive. Recently I was referred by my PA, Andy to a program called Prescribe Fit to help me lose weight in order to have knee replacement surgery. This is a really good program and Jasmine , the sweet lady who walks me through the highs and lows every week is so helpful, compassionate and encouraging. It's been a slow process and that's ok. We live in Marion and went to Dr. Jeffrey Daily of Emerge Ortho. My husband was in horrific pain. I begged for an MRI and he refused saying he only does that if he is going to do surgery. Didn't even put a hand on my husband and said it was pain from shingles he had in 2001. Sent him home with gabapentin. Through the visit he kept patting my bare knee and staring at my chest. My husband was diagnosed with a fast moving lymphoma 2 weeks later that is now in his stomach, digestive tract and spine and he may not live. If Dr. Daily had cared and done the MRI instead of being a creep my husband's cancer might have been caught in time. This doctor is a quack and a pervert. read more

My first visit to Emerge Orthopedic on Duraleigh Rd was not bad. I even gave Dr Hage a good review. Upon my second visit to the office I started to get a bad vibe. During the process of my check in the representative said oh workers comp huh. I was wondering why the huh. Then after receiving an MRI, the very next day I had a follow up. I was told it was a mild MCL sprain( mind you this is 3and 1/2 weeks after the injury) anterior swelling, bakers cyst under my knee cap, a small effusion, and a slight tilt of my patella. Upon leaving I got a notification there was a note put in my chart that said I was totally healed. When I asked about it, Dr. Hage told me it must have been the way the worded it and the AI put I was totally healed. He apologized and said maybe he should have put progressing well. On Memorial Day I turned around to pick up some mail at work and felt some pain and by the next day I was in terrible pain. I called because I was in pain and they said they couldn't see me because my claim had not been approved. So today at my six week follow up he had the audacity to say it was mighty strange that the timing of this recent injury was so close to my six week follow up. What is that supposed to mean? Unlike some people I am not getting paid to stay home, so why would I be faking or trying to draw this out. I just want to heal and not be in pain that is it!!!!! Since I had just started my job when I got hurt they are only required to give me four hours a day!! I am working those four hours, so nobody is giving me anything I am working for it!!! 20 hours a week is not enough to cover my bill, I am a single parent!! I am falling behind on bills, so why would I draw this out if I am not in pain. Maybe some people are liars, but I am a woman of integrity! I don't have to lie and I don't appreciate him insinuating that I am!!! read more

My wife's back & hip has been hurting since May 6, 2020. It took 2 months for her to get her first appointment on 7-6-20. She has been through physical therapy, x-rays, MRIs, 14 injections of just numbing medication in her back, 1 cortisone in her SI joint. She has seen 7 doctors & lost many hours from work for appointments. On average she has to wait a month in-between appointments. Since her first appointment, in every appointment, she has said that her hip & back hurts. She wasn't told until 6 months after her first appointment that no notes were ever put in her chart about her hip hurting. Or that she had to be seen by a completely different doctor for her hip. When on her very first appointment her hip & back was examined. She just had her 11th appointment yesterday, 5-18-21 & nothing has been fixed. She is still in pain that is affecting every aspect of her life. She was told yesterday after her appointment at 9am that she would be getting a call for yet another appointment with another doctor concerning her hip. Today at 4:30pm she called because she hadn't received call. She was told that there was a note that the doctor (the one that did the SI injection) wasn't able to see her because she would be a new patient. He has already given her an injection in her SI before. She was then told that she would have to possibly see a different doctor & be examined again by them just to see what they thought. Every appointment is $50 plus a portion of the bill for my out of pocket. On average my exam bill is $118 per visit. So she asked the receptionist when does this cycle end? At this point I feel like we have had money, time & pain relief stolen from her. I just want her to be pain free but all were being given is the run around. I have lost all confidence in this company. So NO I do NOT recommend this business. So where do I go from here?? read more

So once I finally got taken back things moved quickly and the staff was friendly and very competent. My bigger issue was the check in process and incredibly long wait. Several people who walked in after me for the walk in clinic were called way way way before me and another lady. I was fine if they had appts but a couple of people walked in with me or after me and were there for a walk in. Not an appt. I had called ahead before coming to ask about the wait for the walk in clinic and was told it wasn't bad but I waited for two hours. Then I was taken back and got x rays, consult, and the doctor in 40 minutes. So I was pleased with the actual service I got but not the insane wait. read more

I was a walk-in at the emergeortho walk-in office today and saw Carlie Black. Going to see her was a waste of my time and my copay. She was absolutely worthless had no answers to any of my questions or recommendations except she doesn't perform this type of stuff in her office. I went there to see a doctor not whatever she is not sure if she's a PA or a FNP. She wasn't even going to do x-rays on my wrist and forearm but I insisted because something is wrong with it. Then when the x-rays were done she didn't even take or request the part of the arm that I wanted looked at as well. I actually won't my co-pay back because she spent a total of maybe 10 minutes if that in the room with me with no answers no confirmation. I left work early didn't get paid and set there for her to say I'm not sure. She does not need to be at that office treating patients by herself if she cannot see the patients that come in there and are presenting with problems that need something done because their issue hinders their job. I would rather my co-pay go to my bill versus the so-called visit today with her that was absolutely pointless. I left from that office and went to the ED and saw a real doctor that actually could give me some relief until I could get in to see a hand specialist because she was not qualified to see or treat me but she sure did take my co-pay. Then when I got home and read her notes they were not accurate, we did not discuss or go over the things that she wrote in her aftercare summary notes but states that she did. She falsified documentation in my record saying she did something and she didn't. I would not recommend anybody going to see her and when I get a chance I will be speaking to an office manager or somebody about her level of care or lack there of in treating patients. I will from now on only stick to my hand specialist and go to the ED if I cannot go and see him. I will never use their walk in clinic again Especially if she's there no personality, bedside manner or understanding of the situation and what was going on she didn't even really want to listen. I have never had this kind of treatment when I went to the main office and saw my regular doctor. So either my co-pay is going to go toward my bill I owe from a surgery or I will cancel that transaction she will not get a penny. She needs to take a step back and reevaluate how she treats her patients or actually other peoples patients that she sees. Because when I left the ED he said I needed to be in a hand specialist within two days so I think I believe a doctor over her any day. I have been in the medical field way too long and I know that her actions and attitude are unacceptable. read more
