International Wolf Center - New ambassador wolf pups have arrived at the Center (05/2025)

International Wolf Center

Seeing the wolves close up is pretty amazing, they are so beautiful! The pups were really cute too…read more But after you watch them for a while with the handlers (who were in the enclosure the entire time we were there) you feel like you're watching large domesticated dogs. There was also a demonstration when we were there and we had hoping we'd learn more about each wolf but it was only the wolves being fed bratwurst. I would have left 4 stars but the bathrooms were really gross. Still cool to see the wolves but for the price it didn't quite hit the mark.

Our destination was Bear Head Lake State Park and we decided to take a detour to check out the…read morecenter. So glad we did. While there are several areas to peruse, my favorites were the presentation by the guides and the enrichment activity. At 3:15pm, the guide gave a very educational and engaging presentation about several aspects of wolves, I.e. their color, what they eat, how they hunt, how they work and live together, etc. the presentation was made in front of the viewing area so as the wolves walked by, she also talked specifically about that individual. She had props and answered many questions. Very nicely done. At 4pm, and enrichment activity was held for the wolves. Trainers enter the wolves' enclosure and hide various treats for them to explore. It allows guests to see the wolves doing natural behaviors. Their large paws were fascinating to me. Such a beautiful animal. So glad we stopped.

Chances are you've seen Brandenburg's work without evening knowing it…read more I bought a card a long time ago of a photo of a rabbit on its haunches chewing at a stick in the snow. Apparently, it's one of his most famous shots and I've had it hanging in my locker for months. I was blown away by the simplicity and beauty of this gallery. I wanted to stay in tranquility forever. To me the prices were fine. You can really spend however much you want depending on the size of print. His subjects range from native animals of MN to landscapes and animals all over the world.

And you already know Jim Brandenburg. An internationally renowned photographer, he opened his gallery in Ely, where he makes his home in the nearby forest. The gallery began in a small space upstairs in a local outfitters shop, but eventually moved up the street to its own independent location whose modest interior belies the reputation of its occupant. While most people know Brandenburg especially through his photographic chronicles of Arctic animals, his material is wider-ranging yet highly personal as well, encompassing the North Woods, expansive prairies of the upper Midwest, the Inuit people, and African wildlife. His work is simple, with beauty highlighted as fleeting and natural violence as an element of existence. And sometimes both together. The gallery itself has an extensive selection of prints, posters, and other Brandenburg products in a fairly wide price range, and there is a small theater where you can view some of his associated video projects as well. A perfect place to lose yourself in a landscape, an eye, or petaled tendrils drifting forever in a breeze.
