Bottom-line: while maybe average to its American traditional bbq counterpart , Boudean's is…read moreprobably as good as it gets for London. Ordered the half baby back ribs, fries and slaw. Baby back ribs: not necessarily fall of the bone type of ribs, but if you give it a good tug , some of the meats will slide off its axis. I enjoyed it for what it's worth. Obviously, the smoker is limited in scope , so I'm not expecting Texas style quality. Was a little chewy in some places, but also tender in others. Had a preference for the chiptole bbq sauce rather than the hickory. Fries were mostly good (minus the tiny bits). So close to the meats, the fries absorbed some of the smokiness flavor. Slaw: low-point of the bbq. They used way, way, too much dressing. Like it was flooded. Also the cabbage wasn't cut finely, but presented as whole chunk slices. Would definitely not recommend this one. Overall minus the slaw, I enjoyed Bodean's

Sticky fingers were not my favorite so may avoid that appetizer choice. Dined with a group of 35 and they were able to accommodate us in their basement dining area with a call ahead. Wait staff was pleasant although took a minute to get that much food out and had to ask for drink refills, but overall would surely return.

The restaurant layout is simple: a huge braai at the back of the restaurant with tables and chairs…read moreset up at the front, a bar downstairs and a separate area in the basement that is dedicated for groups to about 22 people. I started off with a glass of wine from South Africa. Their wine list and cocktails have South African influence. Price was £7 - £9 for a glass of medium level wines. I was recommended the prawn skewers, cous cous salad and a lamb with apricot skewer. My personal favourite was the prawn skewers. The chefs have peeled the bodies beforehand but left it's head and tail shell intact. It was served with some rocket salad and two difference sauces (in a separate sauce plate) to complement the heat and spice from the prawns. I did not think the separate sauces were that important as I did enjoy the prawns and rockets together. I do like sucking prawn heads, and oh boy, it was juicy. The prawn was well cooked. Loved the combination of chilli in it. It was very tasty and spicy. I must say that £12 for 4 pieces of prawns might be a little steep for a lunch meal. The lamb skewer I had apparently was something new they are about to add their list of sosaties. It definitely smelled good as it was served. On the skewers were about 8 chunks of lamb meat, 6 pieces of apricot and 5 pieces of onions. Juices from the apricot burst into your mouth as you chewed on the fruit. The lamb was also juicy, well seasoned and succulent. It didn't have any bad smell to it, so I thought it was a dish well done. Cous cous salad was refreshing. It came with generous serving of rocket leaves, raisins, pine nuts, cheese and some slices of freshly baked crusty bread. The dessert was fantastic although I must admit I did not see the South African influence in it. I had the dark chocolate mousse served with blackberry compote, yogurt and pumpkin seeds. I spoke to Mark, person in charge when I visited, about this and was told the dessert will be taken off the menu. So the restaurant is definitely taking some positive steps to serving better food and improving the menu. Overall happy with my food here

Was good and would definitely come back again. Was dead on a Tuesday night: no problem getting a seat. Server was helpful and friendly. Only bad point: clothes now smell like a bonfire--but totally worth it!

That was on the basis of several visits, so it didn't seem fair to change my opinion on a one off experience. However, I've now probably been back as many times as I had been before (5? 8? something like that) and I think it's just less special than it was. There are three main things detracting from it. Firstly, the prices have gone up quite a lot, so the standard ribs plate is £14 - it used to be £10, I think, which I appreciate is cheap, but then that was one of my considerations when giving them a good review. In addition to this, the portions have got smaller - way smaller. My boyfriend and I used to share a plate, but that is not realistic anymore. We used to get three or four large ribs - yesterday we only got two, which is representative of the last few visits. We also used to get three or four burnt ends, but they appear to be not served anymore. And finally, it's not consistently good. I'd even say that most of the times we've been in the last year, the food has been bad - way drier meat than it should be - though yesterday I thought the ribs were great again. I wouldn't say not to go, and I'll almost certainly be back, but I'm just not as charmed by it anymore.
