His Steak was more than twice the size of mine. His Hash Browns were triple the portion of mine, and really Crispy without Gravy all over them. I asked the waitress to see if the cook could bring me another portion of Crispy Hash Browns. When she returned with a small plate of not cooked at all hash Browns. Summary: GREAT food, HUGE portions, friendly service! Traveling from out of state and looking for a place to eat off I-5. Stumbled across this place on Google maps and saw they had breakfast all day (my favorite) but also lunch and dinner options for my mom so we thought we'd try it. It was amazing!! We started with French vanilla cappuccinos (expecting your standard cup of coffee) and they came in warm, tall glasses with whipped cream and cinnamon sugar on top - it was like having a treat AND we got one refill for free! When the food came, my mol received a HUGE crispy chicken salad and the fried chicken on top was so good! I had the cinnamon roll pancakes (4 pancakes with cinnamon and cream cheese icing) and they were very tasty and came with a side of 2 scrambled eggs and 3 pieces of very good bacon! I went to this restaurant with my three children by myself. I've ordered my kids food first so that I could have time to look at the menu I place my Kids order really quickly. And then I asked to have some time to look at the menu for myself, The waitress did not return for 12 minutes to take my order so by the time she did take my order my kids food was about to come out. My food was not ready until after my kids had finished so I had to take it Togo. We are the owners of a successful restaurant/bar in Central Oregon and we know what it takes to operate a great establishment. Apparently Max Groesbeck (Albany General Manager) does also. My wife and I arrived at the Albany Elmer's at 6:30 am, which happened to be the same time one of their workers was arriving. She held the door open for us and said, "Someone will be right with you", with a big smile on her face. Wow. That was nice. We were then greeted and seated by a well groomed professional server who had naturally colored hair, and no visible tattoos or piercings. She dropped menus and got us coffee posthaste. The place smelled clean and it was. The table and chairs were clean. The menus were clean. The cups, plates and utensils were clean, just as I remembered it from a previous visit. I didn't time our order, but it was quick. Probably in the 15 minute range. Our order was correct, hot and well presented. Our server refilled our coffee at least twice during our meal. I had the "Crab Benedict" and my wife had the "Breakfast Bowl". Both were excellent. I give a lot of credit to their outstanding team members, but these people wouldn't be there if it weren't for exceptional leadership. It's incredibly difficult to hire and retain quality staff these days and this manager (Max) has it down. Kudos to Max and his entire staff at the Albany Elmer's. You make Elmer's look really good. Potato cakes! I had so much to choose from. I ended up getting the apple cinnamon German pancake which was very delicious! As I was looking through the menu, the Potato cake just kept catching my eye. So I added it on the side. The added ingredients of bacon, cheese, hash browns, green onions.... I got to learn how to make something like this!! Now, passing through town to visit family we decided to stop and try something different than we normal have at home in the Bay Area. Glad we did. This place was friendly and the staff was very upbeat and willing to help with any questions on the menu. I wish we had an Elmer's in the Bay Area! I need that potato cake recipe! It's great to see this restaurant is still serving great food after so many decades. I took my in-laws to dinner there last night and they loved it! They had fish n chips and they're pretty particular about their seafood. They said it was delicious. We love the ambiance w/ the Christmas music playing, Christmas decor, and a roaring fireplace. Our server was really nice, our food came out fast, and everyone gobbled it down w/ zero complaints. We're looking forward to coming back soon for another great meal. Elmer's does terrific in service and food. I've eaten a variety of their menu and have never had a complaint, in fact, I highly recommend this as a "go to" restaurant. Elmer's is clean and the service is always attentive and polite. Good solid "road trip" dining. A step up from Denny's and almost equal to Black Bear Diner, Elmer's is a little more homey and has more variety on their menu. We saw all the road signs along hwy 5 for "Elmer's" and on the long drive home from Beaverton, so we decided a good hot breakfast was in order. When we arrived (about 5am) the diningroom was empty and we were seated by a cozy fireplace, brought coffee (in those big white chunky mugs!) and menus. The decor was a kind of farmhouse rooster theme but in a cute way, not tacky at all. Our waiter, a very nice not-so-young man was attentive and friendly (EVERYONE in Oregon is so damn friendly!) and not intrusive so early in the morning. Beware before I've had my first cuppa. Our food came quickly and there was a lot of it. I ordered the standard bacon, eggs, and home potatoes that also came with a HUGE and delicious buttermilk biscuit the size of my fist. It was nice to have the place to ourselves to discuss the day ahead in quiet. By the time we left a half dozen more of the tables were filled with other "road warriors" like us and maybe a few truck drivers. True Americana!!! Elmer's is exactly what it is and doesn't pretend to anything else: traditional, American, diner food. 99% of the time we stay away from these types of places but when you're on the road and there isn't much choice at 5am, this is the place to go. I'm not much of a food snob (anymore) now that I've left San Francisco, but I didn't expect much from a place in Albany, Oregon. Found this place off the freeway on our way to Seattle. Excellent service and excellent food! Coffee was not watered down and actually brewed as strong as I would at home. Food arrived as pictured on the menu, which never happens right? Portions were large, menu items are creative and well executed. The decor is worth noting also (fresh flowers in the restroom and a fireplace in the dining room)! My husband and go to Elmer atleast twice a week. We love the food and the service. Very happy that 99% of the staff are abiding by the mandatory mask wearing. That being said why is the General Manager Melinda wearing her's improperly? I've seen her on several occasions talking to guests at the register with her Mask dangling off her ear or it under her chin. Maybe she needs to watch a demo on how to properly wear it ? Isn't the GM suppose to lead by example? Thank you for the rest of the staff for following protocol. I will still come in, just don't let her near me please. read more
