It is an abject hellhole. They seem to actively try to kill anyone on a vent. If the patient is lucky and wakes up, they will then feed them poison instead of healthy food. Almost everything on the tray is white (bread/pasta/rice/SUGAR) and there is high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING including the ginger ale. WTF? Ellis Hospital does not provide patients with any ACTUAL FOOD. At least nothing edible. Fresh veg is NEVER provided, rather they serve some dead, frozen veg along with a TINY burger in a HUGE bun (white bread, of course), and the only beverages provided other than water have HFCS in them, same as all of the "desserts". It's as if they actually want their patients to be unhealthy. The basic neglect and unacceptable level of "care" is off the charts. When a bed-ridden patient rings the bell and then has to wait TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES for someone to show up it is unacceptable. I find it difficult to believe Ellis has kept its JCAHO accreditation. According to Google they have it, but I cannot fathom why they still do. This place seems to be at least 20 years behind normal standards. Their doctors do not even carry tablets. They seem to rely on "memory" for everything a patient tells them. I have yet to see even ONE "doctor" write down or log anything. Hell, I have never seen ANY medical "professional" log ANYTHING AT ANY TIME. DO NOT EVER allow ANYONE you love to be sent to Ellis Hospital. You will regret it. read more

The food is probably the best part of a stay at Ellis, however, the staff are exceptional! I felt like I was in a 5-star hotel! I was treated with dignity and compassion from the ER to my bed on the 5th floor. The nurses were never hurried. I had a situation of hypoxia, one morning. Several staff members were there to monitor and assist me. Of special note, Andrew Lawrence, my orderly on the evening shift was attentive and caring. Could not believe it. Came in with urine with blood in it. Bright red urine. An emergency if you will. I have severe Parkinsons disease. Also I have had two heart valve replacements. I had open heart surgery for "widow maker" bypass. I am 81 years old. Ellis ED put me in a chair and had me wait. 2 hours to get vitals done. 2 more hours before I was called. I thought I was going to a room finally. No, they drew some blood then back to chairs. Now it's been 3 hours more and they come get me for CT scan. Back to chairs. Now I have waited another 2 hours. A total of 9 hours and still sitting in chairs. What is going on? This system is totally SNAFU. Finally back in a bed. 10.5 hours waiting. Oh, also no pillows to be had. Propped my head up with blankets. No pillows? Very disappointed with Ellis ED. read more

My husband spent 11 days at Ellis, in the emergency room, the cardiac care unit and the pulmonary care until The care he received was excellent. If you are ever unfortunate enough to end up in the pulmonary care unit, I hope the nurse named Mianna is assigned to you. Most of the time the wait times for the ER aren't too bad. However, as soon as you're taken to a room, you are basically ignored.

Ellis Hospital- we were highly displeased with the care here at Ellis. My wife went to have her blood drawn and not only did the phlebotomist not hold dialogue, she would not listen to my wife. She called us back, stayed 20 paces ahead of us walking back, did not ask how we were, nothing. My wife was talking to her, she ignored her, and asked for her DOB and name. It gets worse. My wife had 28 things to get tested for- THIS DOES NOT MEAN SHE NEEDED 28 VIALS OF BLOOD DRAWN!!!!!!!! We went elsewhere and it only took 8 vials of blood. Additionally, she told my wife she had small veins and it was going to take awhile... who does that? How comforting, right? Then she put the needle in, continuously adjusted it, no blood came out, then she moved my wife's arm to a lower spot with the needle STILL IN HER ARM!!!!! My wife even asked to switch arms, she did not switch arms. Then after my wife FAINTED, she tried defending herself to the paramedics helping. After this, she told my wife that she would probably experience more fainting giving blood in the future... Wow, thank you for desiring to scare my wife for the foreseeable future with giving blood. I wouldn't usually write a review, but it scared me when I read reviews before my husband's OHS. Now I feel compelled. My husband had an aortic valve replaced at Ellis Hospital. The Cardiac ICU was phenomenal! Everyone from the nurses, the cleaning staff, techs, to the food service were so nice, so accommodating. We always felt heard. They were very responsive to anything my husband needed. The ICU was spotless! When he was admitted to a general floor a few weeks later (he had a minor stroke), the staff on the 6th-floor unit were also just as nice; responsive and informative. We would not hesitate to have my husband admitted there again if god forbid it was needed. The Emergency Department is a different story; it's a hot mess! But, so are most ED's. They are understaffed, underpaid, and overworked. People are going there for non-emergency issues that could be handled by their doctor or lower-level urgent care. I hardly come to the ER but had a bout of chest pain. I have been sitting in the ER for 9 hours without being told what is going on. All they do is tell you to be patient and don't explain any processes. I had blood work and EKG done to be called back to just have repeat vitals and to be sent back out. now mind you it is now 10 at now and I'm told that my blood work needs to be redrawn at the 3 hour mark to check for heart enzymes. Thats great but why isn't the process explained detailed while doing these exams and tests instead of making the patient sit for hours on end with no regard. Not to mention they allowed a poor man who smelled awfully to be treated inhumane. He kept asking for help and the nurses at the front would just laugh at him and make fun of him and when the responded they said no you can do it yourself. A nurse comes out and just sits there and tells him if you don't get up on your own this is your visit and well discharge you. Thats ridiculous and you wonder why so many people return because the care is inadequate, do better. read more

Do you want the solution to be seen quick at this emergency room? Come in one night and come back the next day. I couldn't BELIEVE the amount of people who were here hours after me and then were seen before me. The common phrase overheard "I was here last night and left because the wait was so long I'm feeling worse today." There is clearly no systems in place here to help patients in a timely manner. I only came here cause all urgent cares were closed at the time I needed assistance. Wait times now are going on 3.5 hours. I'm only staying at this location because I have committed to waiting here for this long. If you need assistance seek help elsewhere. I can't comment on the care cause I haven't been seen... I will update this review after being seen. Update #1: we have hit the four hour mark. The RN behind the counter sincerely cares for patients you can tell she is doing anything she can to get people in. We will wait a bit longer and give a second update. Update 2: Nurses in back are very friendly! I would have less severe and severe rooms to reduce wait times for all patients. There was NO reason to be here four hours for what I needed to be seen for. The only reason to come here was because nothing else was open at the time and my primary told me to. read more

My mom was supposed to have tests ran after being admitted to ER, then was in Observation. THE HOSPITAL DENIED running a test their neurologist requested due to "it does not affect her discharge" and I was told its a "Policy" and she has to be a outpatient for the test to be ran... The test was for MG - Myasthenia Gravis. read more

My wife was there for about 36 hours but from the various bills I'm receiving, it seem to be a hospital without any doctors on staff. They seem to call in idenpendent doctors to perform various tasks. Seems like a shell company where many and any doctors are called in as needed. My insurance company says some our out-of-network even though this was an emergency hospital admission. read more

In particular I've ran into a nurse Kathleen near the intensive unit who has been a troll every time. If you're in severe pain I would not recommend coming here. You'd be better off driving to the city where they have some of the top doctors in the world before you're even seen here due to the terrible wait times. A friend of mine who has cancer came here for severe abdominal pain. The nurse told him (after waiting HOURS for blood work and urine sample results) he was better off going to urgent care to get a scan. Seriously, if you're in pain DONT GO HERE. Absolutely the worst experience ever in an emergency room. Brought my husband in on 9/10 about 6:10pm with chest pain they did blood work about 40 minutes later did chest X-ray, and 30-40 minutes did ekg. We did not see anyone until 12:45 pm on Sunday. Totally disgusting they way the nurse at the desk treated anyone who wanted to ask a question of course that's if you could get him to acknowledge you standing in front of him. We sat in n the overcrowded er waiting room literally for over 18 hours & there were others waiting even longer. Needless to say we witnessed an elderly woman who was sitting there longer than we were collapse in the wheelchair. Totally disgusting & unacceptable. Don't know what's going on there but What I saw & witnessed should not be happening with peoples lives. read more

Sent to the emergency room from Urgent Care for concern for my heart due to type 1 diabetes and other medical conditions.. I had difficult time getting anyone to look at note from Urgent Care. I waited hours and was concerned about my heart. The personnel at the front desk was not very nice. Kept telling me more people were ahead of me and more people were sicker than me. Since I was not sick enough to be seen I left and am now responsible for the bill. The waiting room was full, not enough chairs people sat on the floor. I have NEVER had a great experience here. However, I would like to point out one very alarming visit I had last night. I have a 2 week old infant. Last night we brought her in as was recommended by our pediatrician. She has been coughing very badly and her breathing was labored. The doctor we were seeing there was instantly making me feel like I was crazy. The questions he was asking me were like interrogation questions. He didn't believe me, it was easy to tell. Either way, they took her vitals, did a chest x ray and said she had a cold. I mentioned my concern about RSV and he laughed and said if it was then "it's the most benign case ever." She got worse over night and this morning I decided to take her to Albany Med. where was diagnosed with RSV. We are spending the night here to monitor her breathing and make sure she is ok. Thanks for nothing. I'm sure you'll bill me for your absolutely deplorable service. I will NEVER bring my children back here. read more

Ellis hospital is in the business of making money without any regard for the patient at all. My sister is an alcoholic and has multiple medical and psychiatric problems. Last night her condition had deteriorated so much that she had lost complete control of all of her basic bodily functions so 911 was called. The ambulance crew was going to take her to St. Peters (a real hospital) as we asked until they measured her blood sugar and it was 36 which meant she had to be taken to Ellis. She has been in Ellis as an outpatient as well as in inpatient multiple times and their only objective is to do as many tests possible until the insurance runs out. At that point she is released irregardless of her condition. A few years ago they released her in the pouring down rain, knowing she had no money at all or any access to a telephone. She actually WALKED the 6.7 miles to my house and was completely soaked and exhausted when she finally arrived. Ellis hospital is not interested in helping anyone like my sister. Unfortunately, there is only 1 objective to getting treatment at Ellis Hospital and that is how much money do you have and do you have adequate insurance. If a patient in Schenectady doesn't have access to lots of money they do NOT have access to adequate medical care. "In Schenectady Its all about the Doe Rae Me." I am posting this because she was sent home last night and we are afraid something really bad might happen to her in the next few days.I just wanted to have this in print before something does happen. read more

I've been making payments, not good enough, still get Screwed when I have continually tried to work with them to pay off my balance. Unless your on Medicaid or no deductible don't use them for anything. Trying so hard to make ends meet in this horrible economy and this Agency is allowed to hurt you further. Really nice. Now I have no idea about the quality of their work on dental emergencies, but I can attest to their lack of reading material or sources of entertainment whatsoever. There are none. Not even some wrinkled up old copy of a Times magazine from 1982. The artwork on the wall is pretty tacky too and not in a cutesy, "good find" you got dumpster diving sort of way, just kind of an eyesore. They seem to have a very long wait with few people here too. Basically its somewhere you should go if u want to have absolutely nothing around you to distract you. Like if you need a nice, quiet place to do your homework. Or you want to force yourself to meditate or something like that. The nurses seem very confused about paperwork issues. It's kind of bizarre. The person I was with handed on their paperwork, they took them to another corner of the business (not affiliated with the dental section as far as I could tell), then took them right back apologizing that they made them walk to the other side of the building for no reason (the person has trouble walking and a cane even), but then they were also time they'd have to fill out the paperwork again because apparently they already lost it. But her teeth did come out clean. As was the original purpose of this first visit/cleaning anyway. So, really long waiting time, pretty disorganized and/or lack of communication, but they clean your teeth! read more

Most incompetent ER i have ever seen, almost cost me my life... i had went in for pancreatitis, they gave me the wrong medical records and mixed up my records with the patient in the bed next to me, im still in grave pain and my ability to function and work are now hindered oh and lets not forget to mention i was there for 16 hours before being seen by a Dr. they had discharged me with an iv still stuck in my arm still and i had not even known about it..i was still waiting to be seen, these people should all be fired or in jail. The worst hospital!!! My poor mother was in hip pain and no one cared or came in to see her for over 3 hours. I tried to get a nurse to take her to bathroom and it took 10 minutes and still no one came. I had to take her myself. Total unorganized place. People are talking and goofing around and no one is helping Like they should. At least come and within 3 hours and let your patient know that you are very busy and someone will be in at some point!!! No care at all !!! So rude Too! I pray no one goes there. Please find another hospital to go to. My mother came in by ambulance and If she wasn't in so much pain I would have asked them her to another hospital. Please if you can save yourself go to another hospital. read more

We were pleased and amazed by the great care we received from Ellis Hospital and their staff. We've stayed at other hospitals but this was the first time here. With sudden onset severe breathing difficulties, my wife arrived by ambulance and was whisked through the admissions with minimal paperwork and soon was talking with the best experts in the region for Pulmonary Embolisms, a life threatening condition. Other places had been buffaloed; these people knew exactly what to do with immediate and long term treatment. Best yet, everyone we dealt with, from doctors to nurses to techs to room cleaners was helpful, friendly, and very customer focused. We are extremely grateful to the excellent people at Ellis. read more

Avoid the Emergency Department at all costs. It is well worth the extra driving time to go ANYWHERE else. I went in suspecting my IUD had perforated my uterus so I told triage I was having uterine pain and they put my complaint down as "abdominal pain". After waiting five hours I asked a friend to bring me food. The nurse who called me back saw me eating and yelled across the room in front of a full waiting room, "YOU'RE EATING WITH ABDOMINAL PAIN?!". I am almost positive this is a HIPAA violation. Should've sued. After she motioned me to follow her, she sped-walked to my room. As I was experiencing severe cramps and could not follow quickly so I almost lost sight of her. I was handed off to another nurse and when I mentioned what had just happened she defended the previous nurse. I was later wheeled out to a different room for an ultrasound and the technician confidently stated multiple times my IUD had not perforated and was just fine. I was then wheeled out into the hallway were I waited 2 HOURS until finally I asked the first random passerby if they could take me back. I had been forgotten... in the hallway... for two hours... with no one around... About a year later I went to a specialist in NYC to ask about my persistent cramps and he immediately found my uterus to be perforated on both sides by the IUD. He also reviewed the pictures taken from Ellis and said my IUD was clearly perforated at that time as well. He said I should've gotten surgery to remove it a year ago. This is not even the worst incident I have experienced at Ellis ER. That story is private so I am sharing this one, but just know this is not even the worst of it. read more

I have multiple times visited this place, their billing practices are poor. The emergency room is more expensive than a luxury hotel. No regulation on this perhaps. When you want to pay bill over phone, the system does not accept Guarantor ID, Zip code, nothing correctly. Their website, ellismedicine.org is not a secured website AND, no acknowledgements on paid receipts are sent to address or have facility to capture payment. very recently my brother was sent to er for scan by his physician. he spent a total of 8 hrs there, had scan but never received results he couldn't tolerate staying any longer and left. while he was there in er he observed people drinking beer and smoking pot, this is totally shocking. he was not treated with respect but addressed in a rude manner, lack of professionalism and uncaring attitude. Wow! Nice new facility, shiny new rooms, GIAGANTIC waiting room! All donated by Neil and Jane Golub of Price Chopper Supermarket fame... Funny its just like PriceChopper's new stores...Brand new look but SAME CRAPPY STAFF AND EVEN WORSE COMMUNICATION AND SERVICE! No joke...I personally polled the waiting room- Some folks waiting for 5-8 hours...seriously? THIS is modern medicine?!! Triage "nurse" quietly calling patients names across 65 feet of baby wailing old guy farting grunting waiting room... at a completely inaudible level so people were skipped because they couldn't hear name called. Ever seen someone meltdown after waiting for 8 hours and then being skipped over?? That was fun to witness. Millions of dollars for a new wing- without a public address system- even the DMV is better than this! Wish I could have taken a video of all of the shabbily dressed nurses with trashy hair extensions and mystery doctors in lounge wear sweaters chatting (ID badges turned backwards or with last names blacked out)- vacantly staring just past the very overloaded triage- showing each other all of their baby pictures on smart phones while people waited. Without a care for patients well being or how long it would take to actually be seen. No clue! Avoid at all cost. Frustrating and infuriating that these people actually get paid for this! The Ellis Medicine complex has proven to be a serious disappointment. The problems are primarily managerial, but there are some disturbing problems with attitude that seem to pervade professional staff. The management problems begin with billing. In part, problems arise because Ellis Medicine doesn't bill promptly. For example, a complex of insurance-company approved tests conducted on in September 2014 was not billed to the insurance comany until December 2014. For various reasons -- some still not clear after several interactions with various Ellis offices -- about 20 percent of the costs that should have been covered were not. Ellis management and support staff appear unable to determine under what circumstances Ellis Hospital and Ellis-affiliated physicians and surgeons are "in network". My wife has insurance through her government workplace; we asked and were told her first-choice physician was "in network" for her insurance. This turned out to be untrue; Ellis is trying to collect several thousand dollars for what was, after all, an annual physical with a routine blood test. Asking the same question of the hospital in another context, I received two different, and mutually exclusive answers. Even in such matters as calling various Ellis offices is made difficult. It is very rare that one will EVER get a person to answer the phone; it is always "leave a name and number and we'll call you back eventually". This is just irksome. Problems of attitude are more subtle, but equally obvious. For example, arranging an appointment for a semi-annual visit, I asked the clerk taking the appointment call (finally...) to have the ubiquitous CBC+blood-chemistry order faxed to me beforehand, so I could have it done and it would be in front of the physician at the time of the examination. The woman hung up on me. I called another branch of the same operation, intending to change doctors, and made the same request. This time, the problem was on-site. I went to the consulting room and sat down. The intake technician (to call such a person whose job is to run a blood-pressure apparatus and a thermometer a "nurse" degrades the profession) proceeded to order me to move from a chair to an examination table, as more convenient for her. The suggestion that I use an available stool (lower, easier for me with my oxygen equipment) was met with a face and a complaint. This sort of attitude reaches into more senior ranking medical staff. For example, I cancelled what should have been a simple surgical procedure for two reasons: On the one hand, the Ellis-affiliated thoracic surgeon wanted carte blanche, including the possibility of dramatically increasing the scope of the surgery on his own authority. He also refused to disclose whether the members of the surgical team were free of HIV, various forms of hepatitis and so on (all quite commonplace in hospital settings -- after all, they are disease-ridden places full of sick people and medical staff are quite commonly infected with chronic and contagious diseases in the course of their work); it would violate their privacy. In short, Ellis Medicine in all its components seems still wedded to an obsolete model of health care. Its staff at all levels seems committed to an agent/patient model of medicine, and that is just plain foolish. I am a senior citizen; I use a range of medical services and this will not decline. My wife is in the same group. I am well insured for these services, and I budget additional funds to go beyond the limits of that coverage. My wife and I are both university teachers by training; we have advanced degrees and we have research experience sufficient to assess what is going on. In short, we are both well able to assume the role now demanded of people seeking medical care, to be effective patrons of the system, not merely patients being treated. I am now seeking medical services elsewhere. read more
