Then…read morere-sold in 1915 to a local farmer, the livestock barn existed on the site from 1915 to 1998 before it was purchased by members of the Pokagon United Methodist. Rev. George Bennard was visiting the area to take part in a series of revivals, and his famous hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" was first publicly performed in 1913. The hymn did not make Rev. Bernard rich. However, he sold the rights to the Rodeheaver Company of Winona Lake, Indiana, for $500, and the copyright was renewed years later for $5,000. The Old Rugged Cross Church is located on Vermont St. in Pokagon, about halfway between Dowagiac and Niles, where my partner's sister and I stopped off the beaten path before heading to Shipshewana.

The hymn is near and dear to our hearts because our grandparents used to enjoy singing this song and my husband has enjoyed playing it on the piano for our children. We decided to check it out! The outside of the church is stunning! We were not able to view the inside but if we ever make it back to this area of the country we will certainly stop to see it! Everyone is very nice and goes out of their way to help card holders. The library itself is small and set in a mini wooded area with 1 or 2 picnic tables. I use the Elkhart library website to search for items of interest to me. When I find something I like, I place it on hold and get a text to my phone when that item is ready. I have had many CDs shipped over from larger libraries, so I don't have to leave my neighborhood. ( I am collecting music on a hard drive because the Bluetooth in my vehicle is temperamental and I enjoy road trips! )

I come here nearly every weekend. I've only been on Saturday and Sunday so I can't comment about…read morethe weekdays, but if you're looking for an easy place to park without a lot of traffic I suggest visiting on Sunday. Just be careful in the parking lot, it's small and no one really seems to pay close attention to their surroundings-I've had a few near misses. Also be aware that on the weekends there's typically one or two homeless people out front. They've never been a problem but if you're uncomfortable about that sort of thing consider this your warning. The main branch is where I typically go. I usually request a few books to pick up and then browse while I'm there. I've never had a problem checking out or waiting in line etc. The staff is friendly enough, not very outgoing in my experience, but friendly and knowledgeable whenever I've interacted with the staff.

This is a great place to read and use the computers and everything that a library has to offer. No…read morebums, beggars or junkies like the downtown library. Sorry about the other reviewer, from Indy, gave this place a 2, I have been here hundreds or times, never once had any hassle or had to deal with unruly people. The staff is always courteous and polite, and patient. I am lucky to live within 2 miles of here. That is one thing South bend does do right,its' libraries.
