Not only did he grab a bunch of maps and brochures for our huge crowd, once he realized what we were looking to do, he grabbed a bunch of flashlights and joined us. He was very informative, not only about the events that took place here, but also about the land itself. Everything from edible mushrooms to salamanders, all sorts of wildlife and plants. And lots of fun stories! He joked around with us and the 16 kiddos we brought along, had fun conversations, and we even made sure to snap a photo or two of and with him. As for the mountain, it's very historical for the civil war period. Every family vacation we go on we find a place that's not only historical but also dubbed as being haunted. A little two for one deal. Caught lots of fun things on pic and recording. Had a nice hike around. Went through the trenches, explored a cave, looked out over the landscape, found the horse burial grounds, toured the tiny little museum, found lots of little critters. It was a fun day for our group that ranged from ages 2 to 40. After our hike we did drive up to the lookout as well, and let the little one play on the playground. They do have bathrooms there. Well, a hole in the ground, but it does the job! Everyone had a good time! Would love to go back again one day!

From what I could see driving through, it has a lot of history and would be a good place to spend some time if you have an interest in the Civil War. Regardless of your bent on history, the Lookout Tower is worth the time to visit. You get some great views of the surrounding country side. Worth the trip!

Absolutely Love this Huge West Virginia State Park…read more Caveat: not for the timid Lots to do including fire in fireplace Watoga Lake is 11 acres with paddle, canoe and rowboats available. Fishing opportunities abound, ranging from trout and bluegill to largemouth bass and channel catfish. Stroll the circumference of the trail around the lake while casting a line to take in nature's beauty on full display. Location: From the southern entrance to the park, travel five miles. The lake is just a few steps from the CCC Museum, the gift shop, and the park's office.

Stayed here one night en route to Cass Scenic RR State Park. Wished we had more time; was just…read moreovernight and it was pouring steadily overnight but this place is gorgeous!! Stayed in a beautiful log cabin, legacy 24, which is one of their not so modern ones, but fully stocked with linens, towels and kitchen ware. There are more amenities in some of the others; check the website, So cozy, hubby kept a fire going, and the rain on the roof was relaxing.... Unfortunately we had to leave the following morning but at least got to see very little of the park. I recommend staying here for at least 48 hours.... Nice gift shop, friendly employees and unfortunately the nature center was closed (seasonal ) as of course was the large swimming pool with slide. Bring the kids, and either tent camp or stay in a cabin here... Unfortunately it seems the rain had the abundant deer stay away for our trip :(

This a must stop location! Hayfields State Park is #36 park…read morefor me. I was glad to have stopped in. This is a great place for bird watching. I saw two American Goldfinch. They were brightly colored and beautiful. Also the best spot for butterfly watching. Hayfields has hundreds of Silver Spotted Skippers, Painted Ladies and Monarchs. I took pictures of each and I think I photographed a Red Admiral as well. Beautiful coloring. I saw dear jumping and running around the bear pond trail. I hiked all of the trails except for the second 1/2 of the River Loop Trail. All trails are 1 to 1.2 miles. Easy to loop them together and get in a 4 mile hike. My favorite lane was Bear Pond. It was gorgeous with the mountains so close. The Rangers were very nice. I had a good time talking with them and sharing my pictures of their birds and insects! Couple of things to know: 1st, there's no camping. 2nd, get water, snack and gas before you go. 3rd. Be careful driving on Bull Pasture River Road. Very curvy road with no lines. 4th, most trails are in the sun. I loved it!!!

Camp Hidden Meadows is the GREATEST. I went this summer and loved it. They had a lot of fun…read moreactivities, like archery, rock climbing, and pottery. They had sing-alongs around the campfire. The counselors are really nice and supportive. They are there if you need anything and help make you feel at home. I made friends with the other campers there, and we can't wait to go back next year. I liked the cabins - they're cozy and the beds are comfortable. If you have any food allergies, like you're gluten-free, dairy-free, or sugar-free, they accommodate that and will have food options for you. They have dance parties on Friday nights, movies on Saturday nights, and the other nights are just as fun with other activities, like sing-alongs or they'll have "Cabin Nights" where you do fun stuff with your cabin, like baking or making bracelets. It's a good idea to stay for at least two weeks for your first summer. I highly recommend it!

Massive disappointment. I have gone to this camp for many years, and the way camp was managed this…read moreyear was unacceptable. People were refused Covid tests unless they had 3 or more symptoms, EVEN WITH HIGH FEVERS. My friend got sick with what they called the "camp cold." They had a high fever and were coughing, but they were refused Covid tests or basic medication beyond a very limited supply of cough drops, as they camp somehow only had one bag. One bag. For a camp of over 150. They were then left in the cabin, which had heavy insulation and a non-functional fan. Because of this, the cabin got very hot during the day and they were left to melt inside. After camp, I learned that their parents had received NOTHING informing them that their child was sick and miserable. Their were also many cases of Covid (though their were most likely more that had not been tested) . This camp costs several thousand dollars to go to and I cannot comprehend how they were lacking so many basic necessities. I will not be returning next year, and I do not recommend sending your kids here.

What a wonderful place and great staff We visited this…read morelocation in the offseason. It is situated at the intersection of WV 39 and WV 150. Driving through the intersection off of WV 150 takes you into the entrance of the park. The street is called Cranberry Vista and winds up the hill and into a couple of fair-sized parking lots. The challenge with visiting on the off-season is that it may be closed. Please check your dates and whether it is open when you visit. We were very lucky because after we parked and tried the door, we saw the sign that it was closed but a very nice lady who happened to be working inside came to the door and explained about the nearby parks and gave us suggestions as to places to visit like the Glades (just down the road). There are many places to see from this location that are not very far by car. It is a great place to start your exploration of the area. I plan to return during the season just to visit the shop and center but I would still recommend this place due to our wonderful experience with their excellent staff who cared enough to open up and talk to us even though they were closed.
