Please note, very excited now because of the friendly responses! As I walked in I was given a friendly welcome by Alex, who was also the instructor. I'm always early to things just to make sure I am able to get the lay of the land. He showed me around, got me a T-shirt and belt and showed me how to tie it! He introduced me to a black belt that also took the class and went back to take care of another newbie! When the time for class came, Alex started us off with the instructions for starting classes and entering the dojo (is that right? I'm still too new). He then got us warmed up. We ended with the two of us newbies, a yellow belt and I think the other two awesome and patient ladies were both black belts! All ladies even though it was a coed adult class! BONUS for us! Maybe not for Alex, but he seemed to love it! We learned some new stuff and even played a game of tag switching opponents. He made the whole class so much fun, that there's zero doubt in my mind about whether I'm going to sign up permanently. I'll also probably sign up my 3 year old when he frees up to do it as well! The students were as well and I felt right at home. Great instruction and 30 minutes of hard but controlled rolling. Everyone was great. Good mix of ages at class. (I am 48). When my previous gym closed, I was devastated, but one of my coaches recommended I check out Aalon Cruz's new gym, and boy am I glad I did. A concern I've always had with a lot of the top schools in the Tampa area is that their focus is narrowed. There are plenty of great jiu jitsu schools in Tampa, but their striking classes tend to be limited. There's also a few good striking academys, but their grappling programs tend to feel like an afterthought. At Tribe there is literally at least one striking and one jiu jitsu class every day. It's the perfect balance if you're someone like me looking to cross train. And if you have MMA aspirations it's the perfect place to develop a well rounded skillset. Tribe is also extremely beginner friendly, and I've seen my fellow teammates progress from absolute beginners into competent grapplers and strikers in an incredibly short amount of time. I myself had limited grappling coming into Tribe but Coach Aalon and Coach Austin not only got me moving with jiu jitsu quickly, but in a short time have really imparted to me a newfound love of the sport But the thing that really makes Tribe special is coach Aalon Cruz. A UFC / Belator veteran, he brings a depth of knowledge in the martial arts that ensures you learn something every class. But beyond just the teaching, he really goes far above and beyond for his athletes. Whether its jumping in to hold pads if we have an odd number of students, rolling with you in jiu jitsu and putting you in the exact positions you need to hardwire the skills you're learning, or putting himself on the line in sparring rounds to ensure everyone gets quality work in, he goes the distance to make sure his students are getting as much value as they can out of the program. On top of this, he puts together events almost every month that have really helped build this gym into a community. If you're looking for a place to start or continue your martial arts journey, Tribe is it.
