I'm a graduate of Northwestern University and was distraught over my outcomes with other psychiatrists. I felt like I didn't suffer through that school to be on disability. Susan is a breath of fresh air. While she isn't in-network with any insurance company, her prices are reasonable (she's worth every penny), and she will work with your insurance on things like getting your prescriptions covered, provide you with documentation if you have out-of-network coverage, and fill out any sort of job-related paperwork that may be needed. I think it's saying something that she keeps her patient population functioning so well that they can continue to see her, even in the rough times. Unlike so many other psychiatrists, to the best of my knowledge Susan doesn't have patients in long-term care facilities, nursing homes, or regularly in an inpatient setting. We're all contributing members of society and she keeps us that way. As psych patients, I believe that's the most we can ask for: to be indistinguishable from people without mental illness. Susan ensures just that. If there's one thing you should spend a little extra on, it's your health. Take my word for it. Make your mental health a priority with Susan Bank. You'll be happy you did!

A formal complaint has been filed with the state regulatory board. I was a patient of Dr. Mills for over 6 years. During my last appointment, he felt it was appropriate to share his personal feelings on DEI and expressed that he is pleased with the way that things are shifting away from DEI to being "merit-based" because DEI was discriminatory to white men and people who are not LGBT+. As a woman who identifies as part of the LGBT+ community, I became very uncomfortable, told him that this was an inappropriate subject, and stated that I would be seeking a new provider to continue my treatment. He reacted appalled, and couldn't understand why I would be offended. I moved on and tried to go back to the purpose of the call: to assess my treatment and medication (am I eating, am I sleeping, etc). At the end of the appointment, I declined to schedule a follow up and immediately found a new provider. Three weeks later, I received an email from Dr. Mills with the subject line "termination". See below for full text. He attempted to terminate a relationship that was already terminated, acting as if I owed him an apology for standing my ground and expressing my discomfort while calling me "reactive and illogical". This rhetoric from a certified psychiatrist is not only inappropriate, it is abusive and damaging to patients who are seeking help. He is unable to manage his own emotions when a patient expresses discomfort on a subject and should not be trusted with providing support to anyone who needs mental health support/treatment. Avoid at all costs. Email text is as follows: Good morning Amy After thinking about our last conversation on 9/24, I have decided it is in my best interest to terminate our working relationship. I did absolutely NOTHING wrong by explaining that some folks are pleased with the shift away from DEI to a merit-based system. That is not even an opinion...it is REALITY. Your stated intention to fire me for saying something that is entirely FACTUAL was out of line and disrespectful to me and our working relationship over the past 6 years and I am not able to work with someone who would be this reactive and illogical in their behavior towards me. You've had 3 weeks to consider your words and apparently you feel no apology or explanation is owed to me and I find that unacceptable. Your last Rx will be released on 11/9 and, after that, I wish you well in your search for a new provider. Regards, Dr.Mills

What stands out most about Dr. Grunsten is how much he truly cares. He takes the time to listen, asks thoughtful questions, and never makes appointments feel rushed or transactional. It's rare to find a psychiatrist who combines medical expertise with such empathy and warmth, but he does exactly that. I always leave appointments feeling heard and reassured, with a clear plan moving forward. He is also incredibly flexible and accommodating, which has made a huge difference in my ability to stay consistent with my care. Whether it's scheduling, follow-ups, or adjusting treatment over time, Dr. Grunsten has always been responsive and supportive. He makes it easy to be honest and open, and he creates a safe space where I feel comfortable discussing anything without judgment. I would stay away from this psychiatrist for the following very important reasons…read more First, this physician's practice is professionally irresponsible. Specifically, after accepting me as a patient, this doctor replaced one of my medications with a new psychotropic medication in an effort to address my concerns regarding weight gain. Shortly after prescribing this new medication, this doctor dropped me as her patient (via email), leaving me without the necessary medical oversight needed to monitor this new drug's side effects. Because of this, it is possible that this drug is negatively effecting my body's functioning and/or causing harm. According to the American Medical Association, "[patient] abandonment is defined as the termination of a professional relationship...at an unreasonable time and without giving the patient the chance to find an equallly qualified replacement." The doctor is guilty of this because she abruptly, with no warning, terminated care at a crucial moment in the patient's care. Since this physician dropped me as her patient via email, I have called numerous psychiatrists in an effort to secure treatment. But because they are not accepting either new patients or my insurance and/or because they are not available for a new consult for as many as two-to-three months, I am still without a psychiatrist to monitor this drug's effects. I also recommend staying away from this doctor because this doctor consistently and repeatedly charged me service fees before she even ever provided the services. This is at least unethical, if not illegal. This doctor is also not fully knowledgeable or aware of the numerous psychotropic medications that exist for the treatment of the full spectrum of mental health disorders. This by itself wouldn't be so alarming (since new medications and treatment options are being developed all of the time, requiring a regular updating of one's knowledge base); but, here, instead of doing research or trying to educate herself about a new medication option, she chose to deny the option all together. At a minimum, this resulted in a lost opportunity for possible successful treatment. This lost opportunity in turn likely resulted in more suffering, unnecessarily over a longer period of time. Any treatment provided by a physician who does not work to learn about treatment options before dismissing them is, at a minimum, limited and maybe even uninformed and/or ill-informed. Scary.

Over the phone she was friendly, but instead of interviewing me on why I was seeking a shrink, she talked a lot about herself and not in a way that told me about her shrinking methods. It was in a self promoting sort of way. That should have been my first clue that I needed to stay away, but she was a block my my house, and I was depressed. Her office in in her husband's law office. I found this odd and creepy. The place is old and dusty and did not have a comforting vibe. It looked very Addams Family-ish. In our session she tried struggled to understand my issues. She told me that I was making a big deal out of nothing when I expressed anxiety about running in to my ex. It was as if she had no clue on how to validate a feeling, even if she herself couldn't grasp what I might have been feeling. The axe came down when I told her that I had lost my job. For fear that I couldn't pay her (she doesn't do sliding scale even though she told me over the phone that she does sometimes.) she quickly wrote down references for other places that I could go to. One was Catholic Charities, she then made some rude comments about catholics and said that I may not like going to Catholic Charities because I am Jewish. She didn't even finish the session which she insisted that I pay for. This therapist is proof that they can be the wackos in the shrink-client relationship. LCSW certainly stands for Licensed Crazy Stupid Woman in this case.

The office is located off of St. Clair in the Northwestern Memorial building (and there is validated parking available); the office is very cute, clean, and modern, and I waited less than 10 minutes after my scheduled time (which is pretty much unheard of; the receptionist also apologized which I thought was ridiculous!). I filled out basic medical history and such on their patient portal beforehand, which I thought was quite convenient and makes things more efficient. I was really excited with all the raving reviews on not only on Yelp, but on other health websites that rated Dr. O'Mara. When the doc walked in, she was extremely nice, very knowledgeable, straightforward, a great listener, gentle, professional, and very informative. She listened to all of my health issues as well as my thoughts and opinions, and basically gave me a plan of action. She took her time with me, asking questions, and the whole time, I was not felt rushed! The best thing is that she was very genuine and I was extremely comfortable, being a new patient with all these high expectations! There is a lab on-site, and the phlebotomist, Lauren P., was so sweet and kind, and drawing blood was not at all uncomfortable (considering I have a very low threshold of pain and am such a pansy!). She exhibits all of the professionalism and knowledge I have come to expect and appreciate from Northwestern practitioners and affiliates. I was randomly assigned to her through Northwestern's physician referral practice after I suffered a serious medical event and I was shocked by how great my experiences with her have been. My initial consultation was in her office, where she interviewed me about all of my health concerns, family history, and really took the time to get to know both me as a person and my health issues. Despite a relatively complicated health history, Dr. O'Mara has gone above and beyond. She takes the time to research issues about my medicine and listens to my questions, no matter how silly they may seem to me, in a non judgmental environment. She has followed up on problems or before procedures through phone calls about things I, at times, hadn't even thought about. She is always eager to explain these things to me. She truly cares about her patient's well being and happiness -- even following up on what I thought about places she had sent me for a referral. In short, I have never received this level of care with any doctor before. Her assistant, Angie, is also very nice and helpful. To top it off, it's extremely easy to make appointments here, and Dr. O'Mara keeps an electronic portal where you can ask her questions, view your test results quickly, and access other features from your visits. This crook kept me for an additional day at the hospital because he said a Dr. had reported they heard me making statements indicating I was homicidal. I was not even suicidal much less homicidal. He was trying to railroad a mental health nurse to inpatient care because I guess maybe he was behind on his car payments. He asked me three times during the first interview what I did for a living. You think he would remember if someone told him they were a mental health RN but not this genius. I was in for pain and CMH did a mental health screen and cleared me. Then the NP later told me since Mark assessed me he could override the CMH recommendation. Of course they did not tell me this prior to seeing this liar. I will never step foot back in a McLaren as a patient. I will be going to Munson in Gaylord or Traverse city. I find it hard to believe this guy has so many good reviews, I question the veracity of these reviews. They cannot possibly be real. He provided substandard clinical performance with clearly questionable medical judgement and honesty to be frank. He was dismissive of my statements and he talked at me more than to me trying to build his BS case for homicidal ideation. He lacked professional conduct as his approach to medicine was highly questionable and unprofessional, he actually called me a liar when I denied homicidal ideation and told him he was a quack. He yelled it as the nurse was pulling the monitor away from my bed. His dismissive attitude and unprofessional conduct compromised the patient-physician relationship. It was all BAD, it is as simple as that. I honestly cannot say one good thing about him. I only saw him twice but he made and cancelled multiple appointments throughout the day and I saw him LATE. UNACCEPTABLE! Even my nurse said he was horrible. The NP that was caring for me overrode this MOMO's recommendation and I was discharged to home at the end of the second day on the trauma floor. I have patients on the behavioural health unit I work on tell me that ER nurses and doctors as well as psychiatrists and CMH screeners lie about what they say all the time, I was skeptical regarding this possibility but now I know this definitely happens. What is way more common though is the patients telling me that ER staff tell them they can either get out after 72 hours or they can leave whenever they want. Then once they get on the unit they find out the truth. This is exactly what happened to me. I was told I would leave the next day after a MRI was performed but this was not the case. This experience has made me change my specialty in nursing as I refuse to work for a behavioural health unit, I do not want to be any part of the broken mental health system in this country. You have been warned.
