So I ordered 2 bean enchiladas and a bean tostada. The flavor was good, not amazing by any means. My issue was that there were no prices for a bean enchilada or tostada. So the bill came and I got changed 1.00 less than crab or prawns order... It was almost 7.00 for one bean enchilada and almost 9.00 for a bean tostada.. no sour cream or guacamole by the way.. just a plain bean tostada. So my lesson here is that don't assume anything, ask the price if it's not listed. Just because you order 25 cents worth of beans you may get charged almost the same as a prawn or crab entree.. Yesterday we went to El Toro Bravo for the first time in a couple of years. Sadly I was disappointed. Perhaps because it was super bowl Sunday? I've always loved this little place. This visit we began with chips that were quite stale. When we asked for fresh ones they kindly obliged but were still not as good as we remember. Two of our meals arrived some time before the others so perhaps that also affected the taste and warmth factors. The chimichangas were not crisp but soggy. My enchiladas were not served hot all the way through and the sauce was less tasty and a little more pasty than I remember. There were only two other customers in the place so this was not a case of too busy for the amount of help available. I really love this place so I hope this was just an off day. I usually leave only great reviews but I see a couple of others have had a similar experience so I'm adding mine with the hope that this will either encourage the restaurant to bring back the yummy or that others will confirm this was just an off day. I entered and it was nice and clean but at the same time there was a senior Mexican man who looked very angry. He was just sitting there so I assume he was the owner ... Maybe. I suggest reseating him in the back by the back door, not visible to customers. He really isn't doing the Buisness any good. Wish I could give it ZERO stars. Ordered a Chile relleno. You'd think that's standard fare at any Mexican restaurant. Apparently not. There were tiny chunks of chopped up chiles underneath what looked like a folded omelette (the dough) the chilies weren't even wrapped in the dough. There was probably about a tablespoon of chopped canned Chili's and a cup of melted oily cheese. The waitress literally told me "we don't use pablano peppers here." Then you can't call it a Chile relleno and be proud of it. I've seriously had hundreds of chili rellenos. It's my favorite dish from my favorite type of food. I was so hungry after a day out on the beach. We really wanted to try Mijos Taqueria (better reviews), but this place was opened so we thought why not. I ordered a number 1.. enchilada, taco with rice and beans. My first bite into the enchilada, it was watery! Not saucy, WATERY! I lost my appetite.. didn't even want to eat the taco because it was already soggy :( I will be sure to avoid this place next time I visit Capitola. Ps. You know it's not really authentic, when you order "beef" and they give you hamburger meat. ALSO, they add a 18% gratuity to your check as if they are an upscale restaurant. LOL! read more

I think El Toro Bravo is a pretty solid spot to go to in a town where half the restaurants are flat out yucky tourist traps. El Toro Bravo is not terribly expensive, decent service, great portions, and our food was solid. Definitely not the best I'd ever had, but then again, I wasn't paying five star prices so I didn't expect five star food. We had loaded nachos and they were really great. I'd definitely go again. Their chips and salsa were great. We also got the house sangria and it was delightful. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. Overall, great meal and I'd definitely go back. read more

Delish Mexican food for a good price and walking distance to the beach. We were walking around looking for dinner and one of the taqurias had closed, thank goodness El Toro Bravo's open sign was still on. The people working here are very chill. I don't really hang in Capitola, only because parking is so hard, but if I find the energy, I'd come back here to eat again. In summary, this is a kick back restaurant. No fancy bells and whistles. I ordered the chicken taco, chicken enchilada, beans and rice combo and it was good but I was very disappointed that when I returned to my hotel to eat it. I really feel like it should come with a tortilla or two. Maybe it was supposed to but they forgot it? Also the taco shell was very thin and went soggy right away. I don't think is was homemade. Wtf!!! We were played!!! The burrito was disgusting! My husband and I decided to spend Sunday by the beach. We got hungry so we decided to walk to town get in the outdoor showers and get some food. This place was right across the showers so we walked there. The waiter came outside because we were soaking wet we just order a carne asada super burrito to share and lemonades. Well what a mistake. The waiter said don't flip the container because otherwise you'll have a soup burrito. We had no idea what she meant until we walked back to the beach and omg!!! Wtf!!! They gave us a tortilla badly wrapped and full of beans! Tasteless beans. No meat just a few strands of cheese and lettuce! And it was disgusting. My husband and I debated whether to walk back to the restaurant and have them fix it. But we were very upset and chose to take the high road and yelp it away. I think the waiter tried to warn us. I wish I had asked what she meant. Soup burrito indeed and gross. Stay away from this place please or at least stay away from the burritos and the lemonade. This long time Capitola establishment is well known by locals, therefore it was given to try their food. While perusing their Menu, I was told by my pleasant server they were 'known for their enchiladas'. With that said, I ordered an Enchilada/ Taco combination, choosing beef for the Taco and Chicken for the enchilada. Yearning for a tasty marguerita during the short wait for my food, and finding no liquor on their menu, a Bohemia sufficed along with rather stale chips and REALLY good salsa! The food arrived very quickly and on its presentation, found it all to be similarly colored. The overall taste was BLAND. The taco meat had no flavor whatsoever, and the Enchilada sauce was so tasteless another salsa was ordered to add 'something' to the few bites taken. The price point for this was not one $. Plastic water cup, and the waitress never checking back for a refill, even though I confirmed with her that I'm entitled to a refill, and asked for additional Chips and Salsa, but never got served. Above all when I needed to use the restroom at the end, a very rude and unprofessional hostess confronted me with a very bad attitude! Sometimes you gotta respect a bold scam. Everything is weirdly grey and feels like it came out of a tube or the 2 for 1 grocery store deals on meat about to go bad. Ordered a $20 "falling apart tender" carnitas dish that amounted to dry grey meat cubes. Taco salad also grey. My gf finished the salad and it made her sick. I sent mine back and got some interesting passive aggressive pushback on it. Waitress seemed surprised and asked why I didn't like about. When I pointed out it was overcooked and under salted she was nice enough to explain that carnitas are supposed to be crispy. I enjoy this places Chimichanga's - sometimes it isn't what I expect as the first time it was obviously deep friend yet multiple times after the first time which got me to return the plate has come out different, almost like a wet burrito. Yet I still am not complaining because I didn't send it back because it didn't look the same I enjoyed it and it wasn't an issue with me as I still felt the same satisfaction from the meal. Also the service just needs to hear your demands, if you want something just ask!!! I have found in Capitola that there are two types of Mexican places: -Places with good food and crap margaritas, and -Places with crap food and good margaritas If you're considering getting tanked on margaritas, don't come here. They aren't served with tequila, they are served with wine. Sounds odd...but it's like a frozen sangria. Kind of. The food, however, is pretty darn tasty. Not the best Mexican I've had, but it's pretty much always good. I traditionally order some sort of taco thing, and they are always willing to modify as needed. That's a plus. It's a tiny space with few tables, and the service is consistently consistent. Not stellar, but not horrible, either. You can't beat the location- walking distance to the beach. Come for the food.
